Avatar breaks North American box-office record

LOS ANGELES-James Cameron's Avatar has sailed past his blockbuster Titanic to become No. 1 on the all-time domestic box-office chart.

Avatar climbed to $601.1 million (U.S.) domestically on Tuesday, putting it a fraction ahead of the $600.8 million haul for Titanic.

With more than $2 billion worldwide, the Canadian director's sci-fi sensation shattered the global box-office record of $1.84 billion held by "Titanic" last week.

Avatar still has plenty of box-office life left. It passed $600 million domestically on its 47th day of release. Back in 1998, Titanic was at barely half that amount ? $311 million ? after its 47th day in theatres.

Factoring in today's higher admission prices, Titanic still has sold more tickets than Avatar.

After seeing how much hype there was surrounding The Dark Knight and how it still fell short, I thought Titanic's record was rock solid.... Less than two years later and it's gone, pretty amazing!

I went to see Avatar for the 2nd time this past weekend -- in IMAX this time -- and it's a good thing i got my tickets thru Fandango. Got there an hour early and it was sold out (as was the earlier show and the shows on Saturday). Most of the people in line i talked to had already seen the movie (some of them numerous times). It's amazing that a month and a half after its release this movie is still selling out. If you haven't seen this in the theaters, you should go. And if you haven't seen it in IMAX, go check it out.

It's no wonder Avatar beat Titanic's earning so quickly:

* - It's a 3D movie and a visual effects spectacle, which means people will go and watch it in the theater rather than wait for it on media or Netflix or whatever.
* - People wouldn't see the point in pirating / downloading such a movie for the above reason.
* - Higher prices of 3D tickets.
* - Many people seem to want to watch it multiple times - in 2D, in 3D and Imax 3D.

I agree Terminator 1/2 are better movies, though you have to admit that Cameron is a genius.

ugh...  Don't get me wrong, visually it is one of the best if not the best movie I have ever seen.  But would it have killed James Cameron to spend a LITTLE time on the story?  It seems like it was written by a fifth grader, then again to have mass appeal like it has it has to be a very simplistic story so I get it.  But I saw it once, enjoyed it, but it is far from one of the best movies of all time, not even Top 100 if you ask me.  "Pocahontas in Space" indeed

I think this is what makes the movie so great... sure the story isn't anything special, but it's a visual experience and highly entertaining.  It's worth getting off your ass and heading to the theatres even if you've got surround sound and a flat screen at home.  Cameron's made something that people are excited to go experience.

Both are solid movies, but Avatar has restored my faith in movies.

That was freaking brilliant.  ok I thought AVATAR was a great visual experience and a good movie, but not as good as TERMINATOR or TITANIC. I love TITANIC! I saw it about 10 times in the theater.
