The break up of the classic GN'R band
Also, the death of Cliff Burton was awful, after his death, they did one more great album, then it took 20 years, till last years 'death magnetic' for them to truely find their way again and make a great album

Lennon. Dimebag.
Drug overdoses and suicides are tragic, but they're self-inflicted. To be shot and killed for no reason at all is inexcusable and beyond tragic.

I'd probably agree with that.

Grunge
It ushered in an era of a lot of people who couldn't sing and play instruments which influenced a new generation of people who couldn't sing or play instruments therefore rock music is the worst it has ever been.

What are the bands from the 80s that mattered? GnR, the Crue, the Cult and for me that's about it (I know you would add Bon Jovi to that list). Out of the hundreds of hair bands there are only 3 or 4 that could really play and wrote songs worth listening to.
As far a the 90s go I would have to add the Screaming Trees to that list.
Faith No More too, depending on how you classify them and of course Jane's Addiction.

many, many more are worthy.
Be it the progressive funk metal of Extreme. or the rocking riffs and awesome guitar solos from RATT.
I could list tons of great 80s bands. aswell as average ones.

enuff z nuff and slaughter are far better plays than soundgarden and aic.
Seriously. Vikki Foxx owned on the drums.
As did Derek Frigos guitar playing.
and Dana Strum from slaughter played some really awesome bass lines throughout songs.

GnR, Motley Crue, AC/DC, Bon Jovi (like it or not, they've lasted a long time), Skid Row, Ratt(sort of), Quiet Riot(sort of), Metallica, Def Leppard...and by the way, hair bands weren't the only rock bands to flourish in the 80's.

No! The grunge bands weren't the tragedy. The sub-grunge emo bands with ridiculously long names who followed in the path of the grunge bands are the tragedy.

or just about any emo band to have come out this decade, is a tragedy, for that matter.

I was thinking more in the genre of Hair Metal but, yes, of course Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax. These guys will influence bands for generations. Also true with U2 and REM. I respectfully disagree with Skid Row and DL.
When it gets down to it, there are only a handful or 2 of bands in each decade that have long lasting staying power. Maybe the tragedy is having to listen to all the immitations.

I'd take Sean Kinney, Mike Inez/Starr, Cantrell, Matt Cameron, Kim Thayil or Ben Shepard over anyone from Slaughter. That's just me though.
