Fergie, Janelle Monae stand out at NCAA Big Dance

Adam Graham Detroit News Pop Music Writer
April 06, 2009

The NCAA Big Dance wrapped up its series of free concerts along the Detroit Riverfront on Sunday with one Fergalicious headliner and one very special, very top-hatted guest.

Several thousand music lovers braved the cold temperatures and occasional drizzle Sunday night to catch the headlining set from Fergie, which followed appearances by Staind, Gym Class Heroes, Janelle Monae and more, as well as "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest, who emceed portions of the show.

Joining Fergie for two songs was Slash, who accompanied her on a cover of Guns N' Roses "Sweet Child o' Mine" and on Heart's "Barracuda," a frequent cover song in Fergie's repertoire.

Fergie fell to the floor and ground away at Slash's feet during his solo in "Sweet Child," and pulled off her trademark one-handed cartwheels during "Barracuda."

Her set wasn't quite as nimble as she was, however, and the 65-minute set suffered from both pacing problems -- Fergie was absent from the stage for two five-minute periods during wardrobe changes -- and a lack of material.

Fergie, with her newly dyed brown locks, performed most of her debut album, "The Dutchess," as well as a smattering of Black Eyed Peas material, including the group's new single "Boom Boom Pow."

But she was more than a little out of her league when taking on a trio of rock classics: Wings' "Live and Let Die," the Rolling Stones' "Start Me Up" and Led Zeppelin's "Black Dog." That she mixed them together in a brief suite along with a cover of Sublime's "Santeria" says something about her idea of what constitutes a rock classic.

The videos are not the best:

Why does this sort of collaboration bother people so much? Slash and Fergie are apparently friends so what's the harm if he joins her on stage? Oh well, I doubt if Slash cares if it bothers anyone.

The reason it bothers some people is because Slash seems to play with anyone and everyone that wants to play with him.  He doesn't seem to have much of a filtering process.  Not that there's anything wrong with that, he's free to do whatever he wants.  But it's the same reason people cringed at Aerosmith playing with N'Sync at the Super Bowl years ago.  There are many other examples.  I'm sure Slash doesn't care what people think, it's his life, if that's what he wants to do, then fine.

Exactly what Faldor says!  Who cares if he wants to do it.  People can say "media Whore" and so on but its HIS life.  I also play guitar and Im happy to jam with anyone, thats the way musicans should be.  Jimmy page played with P Diddy, Dave Navarro with Christina Aguilera, Axl with Elton john, Brian May with boy band five..... and we get the idea were this is going.  Its just a love of music and being onstage really.  Although, i can understand why it upsets people to a degree, but thats their own opinion.  I think its quite cool

Didn?t we have this kind of discussion before?  rofl

I like the VR section, even if you suffer from Alzheimer you are never going to miss a thing, because same people say the same things all the time.

why dont all of the posts ripping slash for wanting to be in the public eye get deleted?  also i didn't post in this section to try to hide anything.  i don't go on the main board and rip axl or start arguments with idiots who blindly defend the new band... why is it ok for people to troll the ex gunner boards just to start shit?
