Yes I am a guitar player and I don't tap

Last I checked the best guitar player of the last 20 years, I think u may have heard of him.......... SLASH doesnt tap.

EVH is great but they don't have the catalog of songs Bon Jovi have.

EVH is like Buckethead, Steve Vai, Bumble foot only he was able to better hone his virtuoso talent into some melodic and ear pleasing mainstream riffs.

Take joe Perry for example

He is a legend but I hate his fuckin guitar solos. To me they are the longest most boring pieces of shit I have ever heard in my life.

Do you know WHY slash doesn't tap? Because he said straight foward , Dude thats Eddie's thing. So since BJ have more songs , they are better? Umm i take QUALITY over Quantity. Joe perry solos , are far from long? It's funny how you cite Slash as being the best guitarist in 20 years , and then rip on one of his biggest influences! But you aren't denying that EVH did reinvent it?

Jon is

Better lyricist
Better Piano player
Better Guitar player
Better Bass Player
Better singer
Better Songwriter

DLR

Better Gymnast

Jon Bon Jovi:

ohhhhhhh, we're half-way there, ohhh ohh livin' on a prayer.
David Lee Roth:

She aint waiting til she gets older,?
Her feet are making tracks in teh winter snow,?
She got a rainbow that touches her shoulder,?
She be headed where the thunder rolls

Jon Bon Jovi-

Shot through the heart and you're to blame, you give love a bad name

DLR-

She made her mountains sing.?
Birds against an icy sky.?
And I heard bells ringin'?
I think I heard an angel sigh.

It's pretty obvious that you have a set mental image in your head of Bon Jovi only based on a few songs chosen as singles. No matter what youtube links I'd offer - I have a feeling you wouldn't even care to look. How the hell do you choose to compare the lyrics of 'In A Simple Rhyme' to the lyrics of 'You Give Love A Bad Name'? 'You Give Love A Bad Name's' lyrics are obviously tongue-in-cheek and not meant to be sentimental or deep. If you want to belittle Bon Jovi's lyrics why don't you actually do your research and look within the album tracks. Oh of course, not, you know the hits so you must know all Bon Jovi songs, right? Roll Eyes

What a fucking fallacy.

It doesn't take much research to find great Bon Jovi lyrics:

Dry County

Across the border they turn
Water into wine
Some say it's the devil's blood
They're squeezing from the vine
Some say it's a savior
In these hard and desperate times
For me it helps me to forget
That we're just born to die

I came here like so many did
To find the better life
To find my piece of easy street
To finally be alive
And I know nothing good comes easy
And all good things take some time
I made my bed I'll lie in it
To die in it's the crime

You can't help but prosper
Where the streets are paved with gold
They say the oil wells ran deeper here
than anybody's known
I packed up on my wife and kid
And left them back at home

Now there's nothing in this pay dirt
The ghosts are all I know
Now the oil's gone
The money's gone
And the jobs are gone
Still we're hangin' on

Down in dry county
They're swimming in the sand
Praying for some holy water
To wash the sins from off our hand
Here in dry county
The promise has run dry
Where nobody cries
And no one's getting out of here alive

In the blessed name of Jesus
I heard a preacher say
That we are God's children
And He'd be back someday
And I hoped that he knew
Something as he drank his cup of wine
I didn't have too good of a feeling
As I head out to the night

I cursed the sky to open
I begged the clouds for rain
I prayed to God for water
For this burning in my veins
It was like my soul's on fire
And I had to watch the flames
All my dreams went up in ashes
And my future blew away

Now the oil's gone
And the money's gone
And the jobs are gone
Still we're hangin' on

Down in dry county
They're swimming in the sand
Praying for some holy water
To wash the sins from off our hand
Here in dry county
The promise has run dry
Where nobody cries
And no one's getting out of here alive

Men spend their whole lives
Waiting praying for their big reward
But it seems sometimes
The payoff leaves you feeling
Like a dirty whore
If I could choose the way I'll die
Make it by the gun or knife
'Cause the other way there's too much pain
Night after night after night

Down in dry county
They're swimming in the sand
Praying for some holy water
To wash the sins from off our hand
Here in dry county
The promise has run dry
Where nobody cries
And no one's getting out of here alive

Santa Fe

They say that no man is an island
And good things come to those who wait
But the things I hear are there
Just to remind me
Every dog will have his day

The spirits they intoxicate me
I watched them infiltrate my soul
They try to say it's too late for me
Tell my guns I'm coming home

I swear I'm gonna live forever
Tell my maker he can wait
I'm riding somewhere south of heaven
Heading back to Santa Fe
It's judgement day in Santa Fe

Once I was promised absolution
There's only one solution for my sins
You gotta face your ghosts and know
With no illusions
That only one of you is going home again

And I blame this world for making
A good man evil
It's this world that can drive a
Good man mad
And it's this world that turns a killer
Into a hero
Well I blame this world for making
A good man bad

Now I ain't getting into heaven
If the devil has his way
I swear I'm gonna live forever
Heading back to Santa Fe
Got debts to pay in Santa Fe
It's judgement day in Santa Fe

So I save a prayer
For when I need it most
To the Father, Son
And the Holy Ghost
And sign it from a sinner
With no name
When I meet my maker
When I close the book
On the hearts I broke
And the lives I took
Will he walk away
'Cause my soul's
Too late to save

Now I ain't getting into heaven
If the devil has his way
I swear I'm gonna live forever
Heading back to Santa Fe
Got debts to pay in Santa Fe
It's judgement day in Santa Fe

Also D, in trying to defend Bon Jovi I actually think you made them look worse...Seriously, 'Welcome to Wherever You Are'? Undecided

BJ have better quality and quantity so I guess they win all the way around.

VH have more hits that were cover songs almost than originals

that is lame.

Really 2? BJ , have quantity but no quality. Slippery When Wet , horrible album minus the singles.

That's not true:

-Ice Cream Man
-You Really Got Me
-You're No Good
-Dancing in the streets
-Pretty Woman

I think that's it...so five cover songs that were hits, out of like, 40 hit or radio staples.

Where did they chart?

Bon Jovi number 1 singles: Billboard top 200 not the bullshit mainstream or modern rock number 1 which really doesn't count

Livin On A Prayer
You Give Love A Bad Name
Bad Medicine
I'll Be There For You
Blaze of Glory

Top 10 hits:
Prayer
Bad Name
Wanted
Bad Medicine
Lay Your Hands On Me
Born to Be My Baby
Livin In Sin
I'll Be There For You
Bed of Roses
Always
This Ain't A Love Song

Top 40
Prayer
Bad Name
Wanted
Bad Medicine
Lay Your Hands On Me
Born to Be My Baby
Livin In Sin
I'll Be There For You
Bed of Roses
Always
This Ain't A Love Song
Runaway
In and Out Of Love
Keep The Faith
In These Arms
It's my Life
Thank You For Lovin Me
Everyday
Misunderstood
Who Says You Can't Go Home *First rock band to have number 1 country single*
You Wanna Make A Memory

These are real no bullshitted inflated numbers

Also "Never Say Goodbye" was never released as a single but easily would've been a top 10 single.

Take Van Halen's 10 biggest hits vs Bon Jovi's 10 biggest hits and Bon Jovi destroy them.

To answer the Joe Perry thing:

I dont give a fuck if Joe Perry is Slash's brother, lover or Gay Cousin

Just cause Slash likes someone doesnt mean I HAVE TO AGREE WITH HIM

God damn Axl says something in an interview about DLR and u guys are ready to recline over onto Dave's nuts like Axl is your pimp and whatever he says is great u must obey.

I wonder how many of u fuckin drones went out and bought W.A.S.P. Cds after that interview and forced yourselves to like that shit just cause Axl does.

Its pathetic!

I love Joe Perry don't get me wrong but a whole bunch of his solos from Permanent Vacation on are just boring to me and great 4 minute songs seem to last 20 minutes once Tyler stops singing. Its like great songs with filler solos just so Joe will have a stamp on it.

Take "Love in An Elevator"

That song is great for 2 and a half minutes and then that fuckin thing seems like it never ever ends. I always hit the ole skip button after about 3 minutes of it.

Thanks D, you just put a smile on my face that will last the whole day.

And I'm sorry but I don't have numbers for top ten hits. What I listed are hit singles and classic rock radio staples.

I wont dispute the fact that Bon Jovi has sold more albums and presumably had more hits and are more relevant now, due to VH's career suicide moves. That said, in terms of influence and quality of music, it's just so one-sided it isn't even funny.

Maybe you wont be a VH fan, but I urge you to check out albums like Women and Children First, Van Halen and Fair Warning to see what the fuss is about.

Im not sayin Van Halen arent a great band

I just never got into them

I admire Eddie's playing

but I always hated Roth and Hagar lyrically and vocally

They never wrote lyrics or melodies that really moved me.

Bon Jovi has had many amazing accomplishments in their career and are still VERY relevant today.  They've withstood the test of time, have a deep catalog of hit songs.  But with all that being said, they don't come close to Van Halen.  Unfortunately, VH is a mess now, and has been ever since Sammy left.  I obviously prefer the DLR version, but Sammy and VH put out a lot of great songs.  He's no slouch.  Their early demise hurts them in this debate, but the quality of their music is just plain better.  No knock on Bon Jovi, I like them.  They're just not in the same league.  And really, it's tough to compare the two bands anyway because they're really not similar.  Bon Jovi hasn't really "rocked" since the early 90's.  They've played some softer stuff, and they've done it well.  VH is, always has been, and always will be straight up rock and roll.

I wont dispute the fact that Bon Jovi has sold more albums

You should, at least in the US. According to riaa.com VH=56m albums, BJ=33m albums.
