The Traveling Wilburys

As I was typing a post in the 'George Harrison' thread it made me think of this great band... a band that DEFINITELY deserves their own thread in the Bad Obsession Forum.  There may be quite a few people here that have never even heard of the Traveling Wilburys, but it's one of the most talented groups of musicians ever assembled in one band.  The Wilburys were formed in 1988 and consisted of music legends Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne. 

Any other Wilbury fans here??

no. 

They were more kind of a folk/country/rock/pop band. Each member's different style came across in the music.

I love the Wilburys too. It's too bad that you can't buy at the very least their first album in CD format without it being a used copy and the price jacked up because they are so rare (out of print).

I'd say the Wilburys are the best supergroup ever formed for sure!

Its up to the Harrison family and everything to allow the CDs to be reprinted. I remember Tom Petty saying something last year, or the year before, about how they would be released soon.

"I wont back down" is actually from Petty's album- Full Moon Fever  -  a few of the Wilburys guested on it, it came out just after the 1st Wilbury's album.

That was a great supergroup:

Jeff Lynne (ELO)
Bob Dylan
Roy Orbison

I remember when that came out. I went & bought it, dont remember what happend to my CD though.

Jeff never became the household name like the other guys. Poor guy 

After ELO he got more into producing than to pursue a solo career.

As far as I'm concerned, most anything with Jeff Lynn involved... is going to sound amazing.

He's a very gifted musician (E.L.O.) in his own right, but he also has some really amazing production sensibilities about him.

Again, if Jeff Lynn is involved with a project... it's probably going to sound great.?

Being a big Roy Orbison fan, I have the first release on CD and the original cassette I bought. This is what made me a Bob Dylan fan. Probably the first time I ever heard the "lighter side" of Dylan. Tweeter and the Monkey Man is a great tune.

Orbisons vocals are scary, they sound so damn good. Still the greatest singer ever, for my money.

Definitely the only band that deserves "Super Group" status in my opinion.

lmao at the end of the line song cause, most of it when george sings sounds like a beatles song, but then suddenly petty sings and his trade mark slide comes in behind him, just cracks me up, slide guitar appeals to me n many ways.

Yeah, it's pretty hard to top the Big O that's for sure. The only one I can think who is in his league is Freddie Mercury. "You Got It" is Orbison's best song without a doubt I think. His vocals are incredible on that song despite the fact that he was in his 50's and supposedly past his prime.

I'm glad his participation in the Wilburys introduced you to Dylan. He's the best songwriter of the popular music era in my opinion. His new album is damn good (better than any of the crap out there right now by supposedly popular bands).

I believe Petty said recently on one of his radio show's that they were going to re-issue the Wilbury CDs sometime in the near future.  The second one was definitely lacking without Roy on it, but featured a little more Dylan.

Yeah, I heard about that. I also heard some rumors about a Traveling Wilburys Vol. 5, that was to be recorded after George died, but it never took off.

I'm a big fan, primarily because of Tom Petty. I haven't listened  to the Wilbury's for a long time, but now that you mention it, I think I'll stick their first CD in the car stereo on the way to work tomorrow!

"I won't back down" is a Petty Tune from his solo album out in 1989 on Full Moon Fever. This album is one of his best, which is saying a lot because they all are solid.

I love their first CD, not a big fan of the second. I agree that it is strange that a lot of people have never heard of them. And I'm not positive, but i think Jeff Lyne helped Tom Petty out with Full Moon Fever (which is an awesome album.)
