Axl is metal,

I agree that metal is in a sad state, but I don't think Axl was ever really metal.  He has some metal qualities on some songs, but I would just label him a hard rock frontman.

But at the time of AFD, GnR was about as heavy as it got, aside from underground stuff of course.

Better is the heavyiest thing I think I've heard from GnR ever, which is pretty damn cool ok I'm thinking alot of people on this board are gonna be sorely dissapointed when CD is released yes

also if they aren't metal, then why are they playing this show?

June 4th, 2006 Milan, Italy (Gods of Metal Festival)

or is the Festival name misleading? Are U2 gonna be there too? hihi

Metal is one fucking things Guns n Roses have never been! I cant believe some people actually think this! Come on eh! They are a punk rock or rock n roll band whichever way people want to look at it! I thinks thats what has set the band apart from so many others because they were different! I personally fucking hate metal music, have done for years but guns dont fall into that category at all! They have class about them, their music and lyrics have always been too clever, and meaningful to be portrayed in a metal category! I do appreciate that a hell of a lot of people who are metal fans also love guns n roses but it does not mean that the band fall into that style of music! Sorry if others do not agree buts is a fact that the band have always been described a punk rock band! I believe their new style when we hear it all will be different again, but that will be because Axl likes the bands music to evolve he always has done! Mike

You're kidding right?
Maybe heavier then anything on Illusions (although I doubt it, Civil War is heavier same with You Could Be Mine) but it's nothing compared to "My Michelle", "Welcome To The Jungle", "Paradise City" or "Out ta Get Me"... Hell I personally think "I.R.S." is heavier.

Funny how there's more GN'R in Velvet Revolver then there is in Guns N' Roses.

Dude, GN'R is NOT punk rock, what are you smoking?  Plus, at the Gods of Metal festival, they might play the heavier stuff, I doubt we'll see any epics.  AFD songs, a few things from the Illusions and the heavy stuff from CD.

Gnr were a mix of punk rock and hard rock.

Yeah, if you look back, Duff was punk, and Axl tried out for a couple of punk bands, but do you see any punk in their original material?

no, punk rock is something totally different... you couldn't compare their music to any punk rock bands...

But surely Slash wasn't, since he tried out for Whitesnake, and I don't see Izzy being a punk type, and the album was recorded during the UYI sessions with Izzy, but they re-recorded for Gilby's sake and replaced his parts with Izzy's. ?If I remember correctly, they said that they wanted to record some of their favorite songs, and not all of them were punk.
