Movement. I've heard the word abused so many times. The grunge "movement", the film noir "movement", or the Romantic "movement", and so on. These aren't "movements", they were fads. They were reflections of society, not instruments of change themselves. Grunge stole ideas from earlier indie rock, Romanticism goes back to the humanists of the Renaissance, and film noir rips off German expressionism. Like most fads, there is no originality.

Post some more examples if you wish.  Smiley

Its just a generalization, a cliche, etc. "Fad" doesnt sound as good, or have the same staying power as "movement". Thats why the term is used quite often.

Damn I miss Walk's post in the Jungle of old.  Maybe someday we can get back to discussing real issues and not some bullshit feud between people we don't know nor will ever meet.

I hate the word 'legend'. It's thrown around so loosely these days that it's lost all credibility.

I can sort of agree with that. Reminds of one time a few years ago, when Is This It by The Strokes had just been released, and I went to a record store asking about it. The clerk told me they're "a total Stooges rip-off" and proceeded to tell me that they suck because the singer is from a rich family hihi That was just one big WTF moment, the dude gets his money from selling CD's (he's the owner as far as I know) and still tries to stop me from buying the album...

Is This It is the one Strokes song that I actually really liked.

Oh, as for the whole movement thing, meh. A group of people doing some thing that has probably been done in some form or other before doesn't make it any less of a 'movement', or take anything away from what the word is supposed to mean. The word really is synonymous with 'fad' anyway, so I guess your argument is of little point.

As for a word I hate; I guess it would have to be anything that tries to sub-categorize music, when it really doesn't need sub-categorizing at all.

I despise the word Emo.  You limp-wristed, boy-kissing, makeup-wearing guys need to quit crying and stop calling your music emotional just because your girlfriend/boyfriend/androgynous-significant-other dumped you.

It's part of life, get over it.

I don't give a shit that I've never heard of any of your favorite bands.  Know why I haven't heard of them?  Because they suck.  It doesn't make you "real" listening to bands that suck.  And I'm sorry that I like things that are popular.

Emotion has been a part of music forever.  You didn't add something to the emotion just because you slit your wrists and whine a lot.

Mozart has emotion.  Bach has emotion.  Scott Joplin has emotion.  Duke Ellington has emotion.  The Beatles have emotion.  Guns N' Roses has emotion.  You're adding nothing new by calling your music "emotional."  All it does is make me want to stab every single one of you phony, elitist posers.

I forgot to mention that I do wish my lawn were emo.  That way it would cut itself.

Yea, I agree. They all like to talk about how they don't conform to what others tell them to be, while they all conform by wearing the same thing, listening to bands that all sound the same, and so on...Emos piss me off.
