Duff McKagan on Finding a New Singer for Velvet Revolver

Oct. 6 2011

How's it going with finding a vocalist for Velvet Revolver?

Slash and I played in New York a couple weeks ago and Matt Sorum was there. There was a singer there we might write some songs with. None of us have really tried [to find anyone] in the last few years. We've all been busy with other things. I think once that whole thing went down with Scott [Weiland], we thought we'd find a guy right away. Once a few months went by, it was like, "Oh fuck."

We didn't give up on the band but you can't force a singer into a situation. It's got to just kind of happen. So playing a few weeks ago with that singer, it seemed really natural. So we'll see. I'll come back to you on that.

Off topic, and I have no idea if he's still active in the industry anymore, or if he's got anything left in the tank, but I think Kevin Martin from Candlebox singing style would blend well with Slash and co.
That first record was pretty solid. Granted it came out around the time GN'R started to disintegrate...

I haven't heard of these young guys before, but voices don't sound bad.

MC5 was the balls back in the day, but Kramers strength isn't singing.
No interest really in hearing Manitoba.

It's too bad Gilby can't write lyrics that are worth a damn. His voice ain't half bad.

VELVET REVOLVER To Work With OURS Singer? - Oct. 6, 2011

During a brand new interview with OC Weekly, Duff McKagan's (VELVET REVOLVER, GUNS N' ROSES, DUFF MCKAGAN'S LOADED) was asked about how the search for a new VELVET REVOLVER lead singer is going more than three years since the band parted ways with Scott Weiland. "Slash [VELVET REVOLVER/ex-GUNS N' ROSES guitarist] and I played in New York a couple weeks ago [as part of the Road Recovery benefit concert] and Matt Sorum [VELVET REVOLVER/ex-GUNS N' ROSES drummer] was there," Duff replied. "There was a singer there [possibly referring to Jimmy Gnecco of OURS. ? Ed.] we might write some songs with."

I think it's Jimmy too. Also, why does Duff say they haven't really looked for anyone in a few years? Everyone knows they worked with Corey Taylor less than a year ago and and that Franky Perez guy too. Also, Myles Kennedy turned them down. They try to act so nonchalant about the VR situation. Like hiding the fact that they've failed at finding anybody they all like by acting like they haven't looked.

You should have seen the cover they wanted to do. It wasn't a glove, believe me.

Probably because those singers just kind of fell into their laps without them trying. I'm pretty sure each of them only came about after a band member had performed with them live by chance... I guess it's just like a "hey, I enjoyed playing with you, wanna try out for my band?" kind of thing rather than actively tracking them down.

agreed D! I saw slash play with jimmy at the 1st road recovery show in NYC. Wasn't impressed then either. No stage presence whatsoever and looks uncomfortable fronting this band. Like he is in over his head

Yea. I thought those videos of him sucked from the Road Recovery Show.   He even fucks up the first lyric of "Slither"  FAIL.  "When you look, you [look] right through me."  Looks like a total Scott wannabe too.

I'm really becoming more and more indifferent about VR coming back or not. Slash plays more Guns stuff with his solo band and Myles, than he's ever played vith VR or Snakepit and some of the stuff on Slash's solo record is far better than VR.

That Jimmy Gnecco guy didn't seem right for me. Just didn't have the charisma.

Maybe they should keep asking Myles? He can't keep turning them down forever, can he?  rofl rofl

^ I thought it was VR who didn't want Myles...?

I always thought that slash was pro-Myles for VR but the rest of the guys weren't, that's why Slash took off with Myles to do his solo thing, because Myles is THE guy Slash wanted all along.

Say what you want about Myles, but he blows this guy away.  This guy is like a mix of Josh Todd and Weiland and totally blows.  If you want to do another libertad, this guy might work, if you want to rock the fuck out.....NEXT.

Slash's new album with Myles will be the audition we could be looking for for VR.  I hope Myles absolutely owns so they can finish this "search".

Myles already turned down the VR job.
