What's your opinion? Is he completely trashed or is this some kind of publicity stunt?

According to TMZ, it's all a big act for a mockumentary he is doing.

Yeah, I've decided it's definitely an act.  I can't really say I see the humor in it.

I'd fallen asleep on the couch last night with the T.V. on, but luckily I woke up just as Phoenix was coming on the show. I'd seen pictures of Phoenix with the hobo-beard and read reports about him giving up acting for a rapping career. Considering Casey Affleck is filming all this stuff for a "documentary," it makes me think that, yeah, this is some big elaborate joke on their part. Regardless, I thought Phoenix's appearance last night on Dave was absolutely hilarious. Dave was constantly making fun of him, the audience was laughing, but Phoenix remained serious. Phoenix broke a wry smile a couple times, but at times I felt he was geniunely upset that he was being made fun of. But he's a good actor, so I think that was acting last night.

It's entertaining as hell, though.

I'm not American, and I have no time for your talk shows, but while Joaquin is surely acting to some degree, if Letterman ain't in on it then he's a bit of a twat, eh?

^Oh, I think Dave was pretty wise to the act.  He almost came off too wise to the act as he was bordering on insulting.  Dave's cool though...great dry sense of humor.

Didn't Joaquin lose his brother River?  I don't know how close they were, but if they were close, that could definitely mess with a person.  Oh well.

That was pretty funny, Joaqin Phoenix is great ! I think it's a Andy Kauffman type thing he's playing with the media.

He really can be... His show has way to many awkward moments...  Dont get me wrong he can be funny, but its hard to sit through an entire episode

I thought this skit was hilarious, dave did a good job on this one!

I think he should be left to do his thing and letterman is sometimes obnoxious. Joaquin was too close to j cash and he might need time to get over ..all of it

Then why wasn't he acting like this when he was out promoting Walk the Line?

Because it's a hoax.  Why else is Casey following him around with a camera crew?

Get over it?  He admittedly has never even watched a film he made.

The whole family is weird.
