So...I'm thinking about taking up kayaking as something to do on my days off.  I've been reading up and it looks fun as hell and we really have some nice waters around here to do it in.  Anyone here a big kayaking enthusiast than can tell me what quality to look for in purchasing equipment and such?

I've done it years back, it's is more difficult than in looks. Mostly because you want to pull (assuming you've gone canoing before), but you are supposed to push.

Still very fun though.
