The Wikapedia has GN'R '97-'98 listed as

Axl Rose - lead vocals
Robin Finck - lead guitar
Paul Tobias - rhythm guitar
Duff McKagan - bass guitar
Josh Freese - drums
Dizzy Reed - keyboards

Does anyone know to what extent Duff played in the current era of GN'R? I wonder of he made any demos w/the band. Also, didn't Sorum spot Finck? Kind of ironic if he did.

Damn, Finck's been in the band a long time.

As far as what they made in that period, check this thread out. Looks like Axl wants whatever was recorded back - who knows, maybe we'll end up hearing it someday.

well, you know about wikipedia, anybody can edit it. still duff was in gnr at the time. he officially quit in 1997. but i don't think he made any contribution to the songs we hear now. only if this i love is as old as people say it is: 1993

There is definitely some material. Remember back in those metal mags in 95-96 Slash talking about them recording just a basic rock n roll record. Someone should leak it. hihi

I don't remember that, but I do own metal edge hit parader and circus from that era and even the old fan letters from the fan club.. Matt in 94 was talking new album they were in the studio... Each year metal edge spoke of new gnr album coming out... I use to follow things tightly until 96ish then I was busy with going out working the gym and all... Once guys started leaving especially slash I was like ok they broke up and didn't notice again till 99

if i remember correctly from some interview with slash he said that he and axl couldn't meet in the stoudio or face to face so songs from them both i don't think exist. maybe songs or parts from the other guys. and who knows maybe songs from their solo projects are inspired from sessions for the new gnr record

The way I've always heard it Slash had some material, which Axl wanted to modify extensively.  Slash didn't want to, so he turned it into the first Snakepit Album (which many people around here will tell you sucked, but then again a lot of them listened to half the album once a decade ago and formed their eternal opinions ... which were that the singer didn't sound like Axl, therefore the album is trash).

The first snakepit was a solid offering. Those who say Slash hasn't proven anything since he and Axl parted are just plain wrong. This is actually a very good album. I also like Eric Dover's voice although I can understand that he's an aquired taste (like Axl isn't... hah!).

But yeah, I also heard it that way... I even heard Axl sued Slash just before the release of the Snakepit album, 'cause he wanted the material back.

And later he said that they were working on new songs, 'mostly Axl material'.
