That was just the difference in party drugs:

80s it was cocaine (shallow, extravagnt)
90s it was heroin (back to basics)

The record companies who started turning out watered down versions of "grunge" bands ruined it.
Thats what happened with the 80's music too, it really was some amazing music, both disco and rock, then it all became horrible
the 90's was ok, some of my favorite bands are Skunk Anansie and The Prodigy peace

I don't get what was so revolutionary with Nirvana other than they had a diferent image than your usual rocker, that was great music too... I love territorial pissings headbanger

gotta love this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyCKCeJC7jI hihi

Keith, Joe, Slash all seemed more upbeat in what they played though compared to the grunge bands.  So I just think the Grunge era was more depressing.  The Stones, GNR, and Aerosmith all had their dark moments too though.

Nothing over the last 15 years is as good as 80's music.

I tend to disagree. I think the 90s was the golden age of rock:

GN'R- UYI era
Nirvana
Pearl Jam
NIN
Manson
Soundgarden- their best work
Alice In Chains
Mudhoney
Stone Temple Pilots
Filter
Bush- yeah, they're good
Sneaker Pimps
Garbage
Elastica
Smashing Pumpkins

Tons of great music.

90-95 was awesome.

How can I resist a thread like this?

First, the music that was largely associated with Hollywood really killed itself, by going from new and groundbreaking to cookie-cutter albums, image over music, and being so over the top that eventually people didn't want it anymore.

Music then went in four directions.

GNR was the last, great explosion of decadent hard rock.  Still the same scene, but groundbreaking again, no cookie cutter albums, and music over image.

Simultaneously, the same attitude and aggressiveness that was making GNR great was also making rap a rising genre...particularly gangsta rap, which took the "danger" that used to belong to rock n' roll, and made it their own, is a less "hard partying till you die" way, and more of a "I'm going to fucking kill you" way.  But if you look at rap now, 19 years after Straight Outta Compton, it's as stale and boring as LA rock had become.

There were also two big counter movements...metal and grunge.

Of course, metal was hardly "new," but as people became more and more disgusted with rock, at the time, metal had somewhat of a revival.  And, again, nearly 20 years later, mainstream metal (nu-metal, largely) is stale.

And Grunge was sort of the anti-rock hero movement.  That's not to say that it wasn't good (I personally love AiC) or heavy or a variant of rock n' roll.  Most of the mainstream "rock" you see today has its roots in this movement and, again, it's fucking stale!

I agree with Jarmo.  It's cyclical, and we're about due for a change...big time!  But if you ask me, there's a strong correlation between the kids today listening to some of the woosiest crap I've ever heard and growing up in a generation where punishment is a "timeout."  hihi

eh, stuff goes through cycles. Grunge was an offshoot of punk.

punk and metal seems to go into clashes with eachother. EVERY genre gets played out at a point and goes through cycles. Grunge got played out as well.

Now the 80s stuff is more respected everything goes through cycles. during punk in the late 70s/early 80s aerosmith was considered uncool

black metal started also in the 90's (it actually got a cultural award in Norway in the early 90's before people knew what it was about) but I guess only Norwegians knows Tongue

today it's really washed down but maybe thats a good thing since the pioners did burn churches etc and were what you call satanists confused
Today the "posers" in this genre doesn't all do a bad job musically or in image

thats an funny title of the article, I don't really belive in it hihi
