Just overheard security saying Axl won’t be leaving his hotel until 7, and is notoriously late. Looks like I’m drinking outside the park for a little while longer.

Won't the GNR part of the show start around 8?? Axl will be an hour early if he shows at 7. Maybe he'll join you for that drink before the show.  :beer:

Axl and the band seem to be in a really good place…who could have imagined 10 years ago that they would be at this point?  Can’t wait to see them in San Jose and Napa.

There's a huge improvement from last show.

But Axl still sounds winded sometimes and his clean voice sounds out of place in songs like Better and RQ.

Still having a great time watching it live.

Eh, the clean voice is not going away. It is how he sings now to reduce wear and tear on his vocal cords.

He's probably still getting conditioned to playing these shows, but I think he's doing well considering how much he's moving around.

Absurd sounded different. Still not one of my favorites but I like that they’re trying something new. Very promising. The stream cut out towards the end and I didn’t catch the beginning because I was putting my daughter to bed. So I really only heard half the song at most. I’ll have to check YouTube tomorrow.

Also key thing to consider is the die hards on the board want to hear new songs, but listen when they play Sweet Child and other hits.. casual fans only care about that.. I think their set list has a great balance.

I was pleasantly surprised with Absurd.  Sounded better than I would have imagined and I can only hope they have been retooling other tunes in the hopper.

And their confusion when we answer, ''ive been listening to it for 20 years'' ;D

Still weird to me how people question Axls voice after the Axl/DC stuff.
He clearly has figured out a way to sing without damaging his vocal cords but can still when needed.
Plus GNR typically work out the bugs the first show back after a layoff...

Fun fact. Silkworms was last played at New years eve 2001 in Vegas where Slash was denied entry to the venue.

Now that they have played Silkworms... I really love the instrumental of Oklahoma. The intro alone is memorable. They should totally consider to play that one live.

Axl ' So you heard it here first, a new Guns N' Roses song' lol. It's 20 years old, and been played live multiple times.. Still a cool performance though.

The song always sounded like the futuristic version of a punk song for me. Tool meets Sex Pistols.

Seems as the night went on, Axl got stronger.  
So let’s give some credit here.
He lost a lot of weight, looks great, and at 59, is putting out 3 shows per week for 2.5 hours per show, hitting crazy low and high notes.  And then add that it’s with slash and Duff for 5 years now.

They are a world famous act, and have major fan base again outside this group.  They became BIG! Even Axl’s personality at 59.  Just the coolest.

Those of us in this group for years debating good and bad, and in the end the sharing the love of GNR…

I am sorry--I know that I will get torched--but the song Absurd is horrible (IMO). It may have been relevant when Industrial rock was cool, 20 years ago. Today, it sounds ridiculous and it is not GNR. I hated that song in 2001 and still hate it today. To be excited about a "new" song that is from 20 years ago and really sucks strikes me as....absurd.

Absurd to me sounds like more classic punk rock GN'R, than Silkworms did. Fits this band...

I would have agreed with you if it was the same song that was played all those years ago. But, in the same way that Slash and Duff added their stamp to "Better", they did that with this. I didn't notice any significant amount of synth. I agree with Jarmo, that it's more of a punk rock song that leans closer to "Down on the Farm".

The punk influence has always been a part of GN'R.

I think Axl its ok, considering that he always start tours from lowest to highest vocal level. And considering his 59.
Im going to give my modest opinion of amateur singer I am, they should play shortest sets, and get out some songs like RQ or Dead Horse, and put anothers like down on the farm, bad obsession, songs that can express his chest voice, so that he can give better performances and keep his throat. I saw one thing that never before, he didnt sang some parts of some songs, and were songs that requires lot of air. So just an opinion.
In general i think they are fantastic. We have to celebrate that they play the songs in the original key, and almost always Axl get it. I hope see them in Argentina next year.

 

When you haven't sung or sung for extended periods of time, the head,and then the mixed voice, is the last to get conditioned. I have said it before, but unless he has a physical issue with his vocal cords, there's no way in hell he lost any appreciable part of his range over the last 1.5 years with no touring.

Agree. In my opinion the more dificult thing is to keep the voice all the show, jungle its okey, ycbm not at all, head voice requires lot of air and there is the problem. But im sure he is going to be better. This show was much better than the first. Hope to see hardschool in the next.

You are 100% right. Head voice requires more breath support. Especially to do it properly, or cleanly. The reason why Axl's voice often becomes raspy at the end of a phrase is because he is losing breath support.

Why is it weird? He never sang that consistently raspy with Guns, even in 2016. To this day, I don't understand how he pulled it off with AC/DC the way he did. I figure either he was still damaging his voice with AC/DC and just powered through it, or he found a healthy way to sing that stuff but couldn't make it work with Guns, because there is a clear degradation from 2016-2019.

In any case, it looks like the covid rest allowed his voice to recover, and for that I'm thankful!

Respectfully, I don't think that there's a healthy way to induce a raspy voice for long sets over a long period of time for these the vocal coach in the video I posted outlines. I am amazed that he did it with AC/DC. But, it was clearly a stylistic choice.

Agree. In AC DC i think was a mix of things. First Axl did a lot of rehearsals and prepared his voice a lot, and if we consider that he is an AC DC fan, being there was like a dream come true i think, so he was going to make all to sound great, so its probably that he could suffer a little damage, obiously the 95% was a tecnic way (if no, he would loose the voice).
Now clean voice is much safe at this point of his career. The most important thing is that he can keep the voice to hit the notes.

AC/DC is still not the same range as GNR.

So there is no comparison to the challenges of singing songs like Absurd and then YCBM, then SCOM, Crazy, NR, Estranged.

To say his songs are challenging is an understatement.

What he is doing at 59 is remarkable.

I also wish sometimes for him to scream notes with GNR more, but it must be very hard at 59 to perform 2.5 hours and do the razor/needle rasp for all of the songs.

Yeah, there are some coaches who say you can do it healthy and some that say you never can. I don't think Axl's rasp is the breathy kind described in that video though. So it's almost certainly unhealthy. IDK why he hasn't worked with a coach to develop a better way of doing it though. Or maybe he has but even still, he's limited due to previous damage?


I disagree. I see this said a lot but rarely does anyone specify what they mean by "range". In terms of notes, he goes just as high with AC/DC as he does with Guns, if not even higher when he was trying to hit the studio version high notes on Hells Bells. Brian Johnson didn't even try that shit even back in 1980 when they did it live!

If you mean register, he's using a lot of head voice, which is largely what he used for the '80s-90s and what he struggles with the most these days. That's what was so incredible and hard to understand about it.

My main point in posting that was when he discussed why singing like that is problematic, and the part of the video that actually showed vocal folds with nodules on them.

I can understand that people prefer the raspy tone because that is the tone used during the AFD to UYI era. I just wish people would take the time to try to understand why Axl had vocal problems like then, and why, if he wanted to continue singing into his 50s and beyond, he could not continue singing that way.

That's all.

Also, I think that his real issue with his head voice is that he sometimes slips into a breathier, more falsetto-like tone. That, along with the area between his chest and head voice. But, everyone struggles with that. Also, obviously, his choice to sing in a cleaner, more balanced tone.

Singing with rasp can be done safely,, but it takes time to build up to it. You gotta start with a clean open throat technique. There's a great vocal coach on YouTube, Ken Tamplin. He has many videos talking about good proper technique.

Yes, I know some coaches think it can be done. I think that they are either ignorant of the physical phenomenon that is actually going on with that tone, or they don't care about the long term ramifications of their recommendations.

The fact that Axl had issues with nodules in the 90's is proof enough that he can't sing that way any more.

I asked Tamplin about Axl specifically and why he developed nodules if there really was a safe way to induce raspy tones, and here's what he said. Incidentally, his videos where he and his students try to emulate Axl's raspy tone...doesn't sound anywhere near as raspy as Axl. He also said in a different video that Axl's tone in NR sounded like he just came off tour 🤷🏽‍♂️

I think Slash and Duff had a hand in the reworking of the song, as it is noticeably different. I would bet they get writing credits when it is all said and done.

I listened to almost all the live videos here and damn. I think people just need to accept the "rasp" Illusion tour vocals are gone and will never be again. It is what it is. He has moments and is still amazing but it is not 1993. How many of us can still do exact same things proficiently at age 60 that they did at 30?
