Title: Jams at the shows 2009-2013
Post by: jarmo on July 18, 2013, 01:44:45 PM
Let's see how many different songs we can pick out that the band members have jammed on during the shows.

Not only as intros to songs like November Rain, Patience and Paradise City. But others as well.

Here's an example of Richard and Bumble jamming on a few songs before November Rain: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVqkEQ-pXGc
There's the obvious Another Brick In The Wall: Part 2 but before that there's also snippets of other songs such as Neil Young's Ohio and the Rolling Stones' Monkey Man (@1:12).

I Want You Back by the Jackson 5 was jammed on in Tokyo, Japan in 2009.

Then you have the Rolling Stones' Waiting On a Friend as intro to Patience and Aerosmith's Chip Away The Stone for Paradise City.

Here's a snippet of Sly & The Family Stone's Don't Call Me N***er, Whitey before Dizzy's solo in Toronto 2010: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1Vw7dU8T0c (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1Vw7dU8T0c)

Iron Maiden's Run To The Hills before Another Brick In The Wall: Part 2 in S?o Paulo, Brazil in 2010: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=km_yqxMEzM4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=km_yqxMEzM4)

Didn't Axl say prior to the CD release that unbeknownst to many some of the songs have been played live..I wonder if instrumental parts were played as solos..

I am not a fan of the jams....

I know Axl needs them to rest and what not...

but if we are all being honest... not many people go to the shows to see these guys play guitar solos and what not....

they are all talented sure... but if they all get replaced tomorrow... we will still go to the shows to see whoever takes their place play behind Axl

but to the topic... and so im not accused of being completely negative... i enjoy Brick in the Wall a great deal

I just find it amusing how people bring that kind of comments up now.

The solo parts in the shows are nothing new. Go look at your Use Your Illusion VHS tapes and enjoy the drum solo followed by the jam followed by the guitar solo.

Don't forget to watch the intros to November Rain, Patience, Sweet Child O' Mine and Paradise City.

And how about that middle section in Move To The City?

So you see, if you don't like the solos today, you must've disliked them decades ago as well. So your post brings nothing to this discussion. Because if you had some sense, you would've noticed that the original question wasn't about your opinion.  : ok:

I really liked Christina Aguilera's Beautiful guitar jam back in 06 and the intrumental jam before Paradise City at the european summer 93 shows.
That was as far as the past goes.
For the latest tours, the jackson 5 abc was great ! It really shows that within the band  there are no musical boundaries..
Another thing i never noticed is the Cult's song in France ! :)

And it seems that those jazz jams are gone.Probably it's more fun jamming on various songs than soloing in jazz.

Jarmo, back then the drum solo sucked big balls and and most of the other lengthy jams have been nothing but filling time and annoying. Nothing much has changed except quality. At least to me and every other GNR fan I know personally. I bet you like the solos nowadays better and /or more diverse than the "old solos" because you travel with the band: I give you that. I also give you that you and other people are enjoying the solos that are being played at the recent shows because they are so new and fresh. I mean...if there's nothing else to do like play a new song, why not play the Pink Panther once more? Then again I have to ask you this: Have you ever seen Slash play live outside of GNR? Have you ever noticed the difference between the solos he plays compared to the guitarists who are playing his material in GNR these days? Have you ever really recognized his sound and guitar playing? I would take his approach on SCOM, CW and the guitar work in the middle of RQ over anything played by the new guys which is not meant to be disrespectful.

The intro for Madagascar in 2011 is great: http://youtu.be/EmQXNe3iX6Q (http://youtu.be/EmQXNe3iX6Q)

I was always wondering about the piano intro to November Rain in 2002. There is of course the "idiot song" joke song he played. Often just before getting into November Rain he played this part: http://youtu.be/Kfta2GgdSJA?t=1m34s (http://youtu.be/Kfta2GgdSJA?t=1m34s). Maybe it's just a cover, but I was always wondering if it was actually a new song from the Chinese Democracy recording sessions.

Some of you seem to have a hard time understanding the point of this thread. It's not about what you think of the current solos and/or jams. We don't care! Nobody asked you.

Why is it so hard for some of you to let something which you have no interest in be, instead of using it to try to criticize the band?

Stuff played in 2002 or 2006 were cool, but that's not what we're trying to do here. It's more about if you heard and/or noticed a band member or the band play something during a show since the album was released. You know, stuff that gets overlooked because it's "only" a solo or a jam.

What's your point?

Your attempt at smart ass humor by taking things out of context just failed.

You have problems with me trying to keep this discussion on topic instead of having a couple posters turning it into a whine fest about how they don't like the solos/jams? Then say so.

If you have no interest in taking part in this topic, you don't have to. It's unfortunate that when I tried to do something constructive you felt the need to sabotage it.

I know this thread is actually about the jams after the release of cd but I really loved how Axl used to play bits of prostitute right before november rain. When I heard prostitute for the first time I immediately recognized the piano line and could help but smile and think "Axl, you m*therf*cker, you've been slapping it in our face all along" :) Must've been fun for him too haha

But to answer your post's updated content, My point was you don't follow your own boards rules, nor your statement in your signature.

No smart ass humor was involved, just facts and questions. No failure, not on my behalf anyway

My problem is not with you attempting to keep this thread on topic, it's with your arrogance and attitude to state "We Don't care" when presented with the majority opinion from your own boards members, as opposed to starting another thread for what is also, obviously considered a more valid and interesting topic than the one you attempted to start here.

All in all though, My opinion although apparently unwanted,  The Intro's and Jams are cool, and could make for an interesting topic when not approached with such contempt and arrogance towards the bands fans, But solo spots have sucked since Sorum!, but some things are necessary, for set changes, instruments, tuning, helium oxygen, refreshments, nature calls  etc   : ok:

Because I figured you wouldn't get the sarcasm.
Which you didn't.

If you have issues with me why don't you just follow your quotes and PM me.

 : ok:

But to answer your post's updated content, My point was you don't follow your own boards rules, nor your statement in your signature.

Ok, let me clear this up since it seems to confuse you. Out of all people, only you seem confused.

The board rules you're referring to are meant to stop two people chatting in a thread, like you and me right now since you have some kind of issue with me. Your kind of posts are exactly why the rule is there. You should've either taken up your issue in the correct section or sent me a message.

You have a problem with the board and/or me? It doesn't have anything to do with the topic. Simple as that.  : ok:

Secondly, the signature refers to the fact that people have claimed I speak on behalf of people associated with the band. So it doesn't really matter if you quote my signature and claim I'm contradicting myself when I said "we" and meant the people who were posting on topic.
The signature has been there for years, only one person as far as I remember seem to have had an issue with it. Guess who...

My problem is not with you attempting to keep this thread on topic, it's with your arrogance and attitude to state "We Don't care" when presented with the majority opinion from your own boards members, as opposed to starting another thread for what is also, obviously considered a more valid and interesting topic than the one you attempted to start here.

Arrogance? Right.

I'm sorry for hurting your feelings by being too blunt and to the point. Maybe the correct way would've been to say: "Please, this topic is not for that discussion. Pretty please, stay on topic. We are trying to stay on topic here."

Would that have been better? Please accept my apologies for making you feel less worth by being myself and waaaaaaaaay too blunt.

Edited to add: I don't know what to think of the fact that you have a screen shot of my post but yet didn't reply to the post before I edited it. What exactly do you do with the screen shot(s)?

Last show in Toronto:
I was a bit wasted by this point, but I could swear that the band Jamed to the solos of Paradise City right before Richard gets on to the monitor and started the song. I remember thinking  "why aren't the doing the begining of the song.?" I have 30 sec of the intro to PC on my phone but only after Fortus starts the song properly. I may be mistaken but if someone has a better recording or memory they can clarify.

there was a really cool Jam that Bumblefoot and Frank started during the tokyo shows, I think it was when they were getting the piano out for Dizzy before street of dreams, Frank is doing the "guns n' roses!!!" chant/drum beat thing...and bumble starts improving over it, and then pitman enters it with some cool synths. it was a cool jam out.

I don't know about the Toronto show but usually they play a jam based around the same chords as paradise city (fits the song just as nicely as the madagascar intro imo). And since you pointed out your were hammered, maybe it got mixed up in your head? :)

There was a snipped of some instrumental during the 07 japan shows where Axl told the crowd, that sounds good, should make a song out of that
