Title: Concert Reviews/Media Articles
Post by: damnthehaters on November 07, 2011, 08:11:12 PM
Can we set up a new thread here with postings of any new concert reviews that come out?  I know we have the media section, but very little is posted.  I'm sure most of us would like a thread here dedicated to positive concert reviews, or just overall media articles that are good to read from all over the world.  There is A LOT going on in GNR today and I don't want to miss anything.  I'm sure there are concert reviews all across US towns that I'm missing.  It would be great to have a spot to go to where we can find all reviews rather than going to each individual concert show and have to find what page a review was posted on.

Over the Weekend: Guns N' Roses at Gexa Energy Pavilion

Guns N' Roses, The Sword
Gexa Energy Pavilion
Saturday, November 5

Better than: I could have ever expected in weather that was damn near perfect.

Do those jeans make Axl look fat?

But somehow, perhaps because expectations were so low, a rather healthy-looking Rose and his current collection of sidemen put on a hell of a show.
Playing a collection of hits, deep cuts and surprising cover choices, Guns N' Roses were accomplished throughout the evening. The only drawback was an over-reliance on solos. Hell, I was half expecting the roadies to get their moment in the spotlight.

But despite the '70s-era showboating and the horribly low volume on Rose's microphone, the band sounded as good, if not better, than the original crew of Slash, Izzy, Duff, etc.

What Axl Rose has done is assemble a large cast of skilled instrumentalists, guys who clearly know their roles and who calls the shots.

The entire concert was staged like some odd rock and roll variety show. Besides the solos, the set list included covers of The Who's "My Generation" (sung by bassist Tommy Stinson) and AC/DC's "Whole Lotta Rosie." Even the solos were mishmashes of everything from the James Bond and Pink Panther themes to snippets of songs from Elton John and Pink Floyd.

But for the most part, it all worked because Guns N' Roses original material still sounds as fresh and engaging as it did in the late 80's. Although the show began with the semi-recent "Chinese Democracy," it was on the second song, "Welcome to the Jungle," that the band really hit stride.

I can start with what I found tonight....(it would be just like our youtube page)

Great article. Tell you the truth, I don't care if old gn'r ever play together again, but it would be cool if axl and slash could patch it up.

From what it sounds like, Axl and Slash may be getting along better than anyone portrays. Forget the whole reunion thing. I think for everyone, fans, the band, Axl n' Slash, it'd be nice to see them together some how, get some closure, and move on. I think it would do everyone in the band a great service for Axl and Slash to sit together, on camera, have Slash say he's cool with the new lineup, Axl like's Slash's new stuff, etc....just to put everything behind them.

Guns N' Roses plays til the wee hours

By Kevin Coffey
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

After Tuesday night's Guns N' Roses show, some might call in sick to work today.

Or maybe they'll just show up groggy and weary-eyed.

Why? The concert at CenturyLink Center Omaha was a late one. The band made its curtain call after 1:15 a.m.

The night started with an opening set from the Reverend Horton Heat and Guns N' Roses followed at 10:30 p.m.

Axl Rose and his cohorts delivered with a concert full of the band's hits and some old favorites such as "Sweet Child O Mine," "Welcome To The Jungle" and "Live And Let Die" as well as several songs from the band's latest album, "Chinese Democracy."

"Thank you," Rose said to the thousands cheering for him. "No really, thank you. What a really nice audience. Thank you for spending your night with us. God knows there's better things to do."

Though it was a late show, it could have been worse. Guns N' Roses is notoriously late to the stage and has begun recent performances as much as two hours late, according to reviews.

Rose - in a bandana, jeans, chains and at least eight different hats he switched out through the show - also looked and sounded better than recent reports had led me to believe. Some said he was off-key and out of rhythm and the victim of some major weight gain.

In Omaha, he was svelte and incredibly active. Throughout the show, he did his trademark jerky, twirling dance moves and his voice - one of the most recognizable in rock - was like a smack in the face: sharp, strong and surprising.

The thousands in attendance - some in leather and faded GNR shirts and others in Rose-style red bandanas - were mesmerized by the band and cheered until their lungs were sore. During solos, the crowd threw fists in the air and jumped around, too.

At least, those were the people that stuck around.

As the night wore on, many people began to leave even though the band hadn't yet played songs such as "November Rain" (they did get to the piano/guitar ballad eventually). By the end of the concert, about half of the original crowd remained in the arena.

The band acknowledged the late hour when, during hour two, roadies brought a tub to the stage and Rose began to pull out cans of Monster energy drink and throw them into the crowd.

Some fans probably needed it. Some were yawning and others (myself included) sat down after being on their feet for most of the concert.

While a Guns N' Roses set is full of blistering, face-melting hard rock, there were some lulls. The band could cut down the dull moments by dropping some of the lesser-known (and, frankly, not as good) songs from "Chinese Democracy" out of its set.

GNR also played random several covers, the highlight of which was bassist Tommy Stinson (formerly of the Replacements) singing lead vocals on The Who's "My Generation."

Not counting the guitar solos present in almost every song, there were nearly a dozen extra solos that were like entire songs. Some songs were filled with so many guitar solos and hair-metal-style jamming that they felt like they might not end ("Knockin' On Heaven's Door," especially).

Still, the band has more hits than it knows what to do with. After two hours, I couldn't think of more songs that the band could possibly play. They followed with "Night Train," "Don't Cry," "Patience" and several others.

The two hour and forty five-minute set ended on "Paradise City" while what was left of the crowd got the last of their energy out while fireworks, confetti cannons and spurts of flame burst into the air.

In the end, it was surprisingly good, but still somewhat disappointing.

Of course, it must be noted that the Guns N' Roses that played Tuesday wasn't what many call the "real" Guns N' Roses. Of the band's classic lineup, Rose is the only one still in the band.

As a music journalist, there's something in me that's against the whole idea of bands with only one original member. The original's always better, right?

Well, even though this Guns N' Roses doesn't contain anyone named Slash or Duff, they were surprisingly good. Though they're replacement players, D.J. Ashba, Stinson and others in the band are talented and have some impressive resumes. And they do nicely (at least until - I hope - a reunion tour happens).

As good as the show was, it could have been better. Cut the fluff: Several songs, most of the wardrobe changes, some of the band members (there's eight when they only really need six) and about an hour of the set could easily go and make it one of the tightest, most rocking shows ever.

It was still a good show, despite ending at 1:17 a.m. (the latest I've ever been at an arena show), and the fans loved it.

And Rose loved their admiration.

"Thank you for coming out tonight," he said before taking a bow. "Thank you again. You guys have been awesome."

Is the youtube thread on this site convenient for you?  Is it nice to go to that thread and browse through videos?  This is the same concept, but only with articles and reviews.

The YouTube thread has videos posted that don't necessarily belong in other threads. :)  If this was a locked news article thread to read...but to double posting all the "media articles" that are in other threads just creates two discussions.

What makes you think every article will be posted twice??  If MTV comes out with an article tomorrow about the current tour and how Axl is performing, where else would that go?  Instead of starting a whole new thread, just post it here.  I guarantee you that articles will be posted here that don't belong in other threads just like youtube.  And if someone wants to read concert reviews from a bunch of shows, they can come here, instead of searching and looking through each show individually and trying to figure out what page the review is on.

And why are you the only one who cares?....this is working just fine...good lord

And you have re-posted the article I posted "Axl Rose Interviewed On 'That Metal Show' from the "Axl and GN'R on VH1's That Metal Show" where it belonged.

To put this concert review into some perspective, I will give you a little background about myself. I think I have been blessed with seeing some of the best tours that rock n roll has ever seen.

In the summer of 1988, when I was just starting middle school, I saw Elton John for the first of 3 times. At 13, in 1990, I saw Paul McCartney's excellent show when he played Municipal Stadium and two more times when he played arenas stateside in the 2000s. I saw Guns N Roses for the first time on the second last school day of middle school and was the envy of all the burnouts who were shocked that a straight laced kid such as myself was allowed to see what was then dubbed as "The Most Dangerous Band on the Planet". I've seen legends such as Neil Young and Bob Dylan multiple times and have taken in shows by Oasis' Gallagher brothers at a rate that may have surpassed twenty times. I've seen shows by The Who, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, and U2. I was privileged to see the inaugural Rock N Roll Hall of Fame show on the shores of Lake Erie that brought about numerous legendary acts that the genre spawned. I say this to notify you straight-off that I know a thing or two about a great rock concert, and what I witnessed at the Covelli Center on Wednesday night that turned into Thursday morning topped them all. Axl Rose and his hired guns delivered a performance of epic proportions.

People love to bask in nostalgia and miss Axl's top wearing hat partner but, truth be told, I've seen all three legs of the Chinese Democracy Tour (which started in 2002 even though the album didn't get officially released till 2008) and each show surpassed that of the Use Your Illusion Tour that hit the Richfield Coliseum in 1991. While Axl didn't have his childhood buddy playing rhythm guitar, a drunk on bass, a herion junkie on drums (who was axed by the time I saw them), and the famous guitar virtuoso, things seemed more refined in the 2000s-era GNR show in a good way. The Chinese Democracy bands from 2002-2008, made up of seemingly anyone who Axl wanted to play with at the time who was a highly skilled musician, never was sloppy and was well rehearsed (maybe to a fault) and didn't play at a decibal level that made your ears ring for days on end. What was dissapointing was the element of surprise that the shows brought and their heavy leaning on GNR's debut album Appetite for Destruction when they had many more songs at their disposal that would have added a better mix to an hour and forty five minute gig. What seemed to unnerve many concert goers during these gigs was the fact that Rose would saunter on stage at just about any time he pleased and deliver a stellar gig, like in the golden era of GNR, but their lives had changed with family and work obligations and they didn't enjoy getting home after the bars had already closed down for the night.

The original GNR shows seemed to have a club feel in an arena setting and, while at times electrifying, seemed to be out of place in the surroundings. When the Illusion shows moved to stadiums, which I unfortunately missed, it probably opened things up a bit but by that time Izzy Stradlin had left the band which was a devastating blow as he was a key songwriting partner, backing vocalist, and decades long friend to enigmatic Rose. Key members of the band remained and they played many legendary shows, but after 1994 the fire was gone and Axl went his separate ways with the rest of the old crew.

With all that being said, let's take our to attention to proceedings at Youngstown's Covelli Center. Axl is still a late arriver to his party but seems to make his regular appearance at about 11 pm nowadays. Every party needs something to celebrate and what is better than being inducted to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame earlier in the day on his first try. Rose was clearly in a good mood and the crowd was truly electric in the modern arena that was at near capacity. The band, some of which has played with Axl for a decade now, is tight as ever and doesn't play as close to the vest as they had in the past. Couple that with a setlist that has added in stellar songs from the Illusion era, including Civil War which had been absent for 18 years, along with the songs you expect from Appetite and a great selection of covers that show the wide ranging influence on Rose and any moderate GNR fan would be more than pleased witness the proceedings. Also included in the set are sublime choices from the highly underrated Chinese Democracy which would could have been called Use Your Illusion III as it is in the same vein as those two classics that spawned hits such as November Rain, Don't Cry, You Could Be Mine, and the McCartney cover Live and Let Die which all made their way on the setlist that lasted 3 hours with some guitar solos thrown in so the crowd could catch its breath after being barraged with hit after hit in the Axl Rose canon. This time around it seems that the band is playing at a little louder level than in the past which was welcoming as added something extra to the show but is not nearly as loud as the 1991 version which was over the top.

For a man nearing 50, the Indiana native hasn't lost a step. Rose still zooms across the stage at a roaring pace throughout shows like he did in his 20's and still has the vocal prowess of an Opera singer. It is noteworthy to point out that the tour manager seemed to know how to plan these gigs as the Youngstown gig, which is a short trip from Cleveland, was the same day the GNR induction announcement and I highly doubt that was a coincidence. The band followed it up with a trip to Indianapolis yesterday which is an hour drive from his hometown of Layfette. Axl acknowledged being being anointed Rock royalty by concluding the night by saying "Thank you to the Rock Hall and our fans" and later tweeted a nearly identical message to his legion of fans on the world wide web.

Seeing McCartney at age 48 and Rose at age 49 really helped me put things in perspective as I compared the two performances in my head. The former Beatle put on a show that I will never forget, and is still in my top 3 all-time, but even with all those classic songs that spawned stadium sing-alongs the energy at the 3 hour Guns N Roses show was more explosive. That is why Axl Rose is a first ballot member of the Rock Hall.

It will be interesting to see if he shows up to Cleveland's Public Hall to accept his award with the bandmates that he has been estranged from for so long but as the night concluded with Frank Sinatra's My Way nobody knows what is up his sleeve. Maybe if they invite the cast from America's favorite serial killer Dexter, who's theme song he came out to with roaring applause, perhaps Rose can be coaxed to reunite with the original Guns and make it the happy ending that many music fans are dying to see. If he keeps putting on shows like this I really don't care who it is with as it was a truly sensational performance that shows that Axl is still performing at the highest levels of rock n roll royalty.

Utah concert review: Guns N' Roses

Right before hard-rock band Guns N' Roses launched into its explosive cover of Paul McCartney's "Live and Let Die" about one hour into its show Wednesday night at the Maverik Center, West Valley City Mayor Mike Winder improbably stepped onstage and greeted the band's mercurial frontman Axl Rose.

Winder congratulated the band on this past week's announcement that the Los Angeles-based band had been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and presented Rose a key to the city.

"How long do you stay open?" Rose asked the mayor. "All night for Guns N' Roses," the mayor replied.

The mayor had no idea how right he was, as the band played an epic, thrilling and utterly captivating three-hour set with more than 30 songs that only ended as the closing refrains of "Paradise City" were played just after 2 a.m.

The big question of the night was whether the backing band of Guns N' Roses was up to the task of accompanying Rose on some of the best rock songs of the latter part of the 20th century, or whether they ? like Winder, who has been in the news lately because of writing news stories under a fake byline ? were merely impostors.

The answer? The seven musicians, despite some missteps at the end of the long evening, made most in attendance forget the former band members of GNR, Those Who Shall Not Be Named.

The acoustics in the well-attended arena were superb as Axl and the Magnificent Seven led the crowd through a blistering set that included songs from the band's landmark 1987 debut "Appetite for Destruction" to 2008's "Chinese Democracy." After the concert began with the opening theme to the serial-killer TV show "Dexter," guitarist D.J. Ashba unleashed the memorable opening riffs of the title song to the the 2008 and the band was off to the races.

GNR has been legendary for its lateness for showing up on stage, but refreshingly the eight began their show at 11 p.m., a mere 45 minutes after opening act Black Label Society wrapped up its set.

Rose, 49, whose appearance has been lampooned in past years with added weight and cornrows, looked lean and fit in a black leather jacket and blue jeans with a crimson bandanna hanging from his hip. In between changing his headwear about seven times, he fulfilled all expectations of being the consummate frontman, swaying to the rhythms of his mic stand and frequently sprinting to each side of the stage. Rose was in fine voice, with a range between a falsetto to deep tenor, and, best of all, acted as if he still had something to prove.

Article about the upcoming show in Phoenix, with Dj & Dizzy !

Reed has been quoted, in fact, as saying that this current lineup is the best version of Guns N' Roses that he's ever been in -- even better
