Title: Slash Is Fergie's Surprise Guest At NCAA Big Dance

Fergie, Janelle Monae stand out at NCAA Big Dance

Adam Graham Detroit News Pop Music Writer
April 06, 2009

The NCAA Big Dance wrapped up its series of free concerts along the Detroit Riverfront on Sunday with one Fergalicious headliner and one very special, very top-hatted guest.

Several thousand music lovers braved the cold temperatures and occasional drizzle Sunday night to catch the headlining set from Fergie, which followed appearances by Staind, Gym Class Heroes, Janelle Monae and more, as well as "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest, who emceed portions of the show.

Joining Fergie for two songs was Slash, who accompanied her on a cover of Guns N' Roses "Sweet Child o' Mine" and on Heart's "Barracuda," a frequent cover song in Fergie's repertoire.

Fergie fell to the floor and ground away at Slash's feet during his solo in "Sweet Child," and pulled off her trademark one-handed cartwheels during "Barracuda."

Her set wasn't quite as nimble as she was, however, and the 65-minute set suffered from both pacing problems -- Fergie was absent from the stage for two five-minute periods during wardrobe changes -- and a lack of material.

Fergie, with her newly dyed brown locks, performed most of her debut album, "The Dutchess," as well as a smattering of Black Eyed Peas material, including the group's new single "Boom Boom Pow."

But she was more than a little out of her league when taking on a trio of rock classics: Wings' "Live and Let Die," the Rolling Stones' "Start Me Up" and Led Zeppelin's "Black Dog." That she mixed them together in a brief suite along with a cover of Sublime's "Santeria" says something about her idea of what constitutes a rock classic.

The videos are not the best:

Why does this sort of collaboration bother people so much? Slash and Fergie are apparently friends so what's the harm if he joins her on stage? Oh well, I doubt if Slash cares if it bothers anyone.

The reason it bothers some people is because Slash seems to play with anyone and everyone that wants to play with him.  He doesn't seem to have much of a filtering process.  Not that there's anything wrong with that, he's free to do whatever he wants.  But it's the same reason people cringed at Aerosmith playing with N'Sync at the Super Bowl years ago.  There are many other examples.  I'm sure Slash doesn't care what people think, it's his life, if that's what he wants to do, then fine.

Exactly what Faldor says!  Who cares if he wants to do it.  People can say "media Whore" and so on but its HIS life.  I also play guitar and Im happy to jam with anyone, thats the way musicans should be.  Jimmy page played with P Diddy, Dave Navarro with Christina Aguilera, Axl with Elton john, Brian May with boy band five..... and we get the idea were this is going.  Its just a love of music and being onstage really.  Although, i can understand why it upsets people to a degree, but thats their own opinion.  I think its quite cool

Didn?t we have this kind of discussion before?

I like the VR section, even if you suffer from Alzheimer you are never going to miss a thing, because same people say the same things all the time.

why dont all of the posts ripping slash for wanting to be in the public eye get deleted?  also i didn't post in this section to try to hide anything.  i don't go on the main board and rip axl or start arguments with idiots who blindly defend the new band... why is it ok for people to troll the ex gunner boards just to start shit?

Why do you have to post old shit that's been answered and discussed over and over again?

Short answer: This is a GN'R FAN site. Slash is not (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9ggYBUs5no) in GN'R anymore.

why is it ok for you to bring up Axl for no reason in a thread that has nothing to do with him?

why should your little hero get special treatment on a forum dedicated to a band he hasn't been a part of since 1995?

since we are answering questions with questions...   why even bother having a section dedicated to the old members if trolls just come here to make digs for no good reason.  the whole thread about slash doing some charity work was about him doing anything to get some pub.. 11 pages of people being petty asses.. for no reason what so ever.  its a double standard.  if anyone dares challenge axl on the main board their posts either get deleted or accused of being a troll.  but when someone trolls and rips slash in the ex gunners section its completely acceptable.

i don't know how else to explain it.  slash isn't in GnR anymore.    If you don't like the way things are, you can always go post elsewhere, or better yet, start your own slash site.

you still haven't explained what Axl has to do with this discussion.   I'd really like to hear your answer to that.   There was absolutely no reason to bring him up in the VR section.  That would be like bringing up Slash in the GnR section.

Seems the only way you know how to defend your little hero is by trashing Axl for no reason.  Combine that with your username, its clear where your interests lie and I have a feeling you'd be happier posting on a different website.  Just my two cents.

i brought up axl only to show the double standard.. slash is by no means a hero of mine.. i could personally careless about him or axl for that matter.  he is simply my fav guitarist that was in gnr.  who is yours? DJ or tobias?  if you don't want threads about former members then get rid of the section... its clear that anytime someone posts something positive about slash trolls just take the opportunity to be negative

I think it's clear anytime someone post anything, trolls just take the opportunity to be negative. They are TROLLS no matter whose side of the fence they are on in the end they strive for the same result.

Well if you're here to be negative about GN'R, you're on the wrong fucking site.

And by GN'R, I obviously mean the GN'R we have today. Just to make sure for those who are easily confused....

its not a double standard.  That would be like me going to a Metallica board and doing nothing but posting positive things about GnR and bashing Metallica.

don't you think at a fan site, there is going to be some positive bias towards the band the site is dedicated to?

I agree with that , its obvious this is a fan site dedicated to the current incarnation of GN'R as is. It's actually pretty wide known within the GN'R community that this forum is dedicated to one purpose only, supporting the band. But if you are here to troll period i think that you are on the "wrong fucking site".

But if an outsider comes bashing old era GNR, you would feel obligated to defend that era.  Its like "I can talk shit about my family, but an outsider can't" type thing.  Like you may not care for slash, but if this site was invade by say....Janes Addiction fans saying how GNR was terrible in 88 or 91, you would probably feel obligated to defend GNR's legacy aswell.  But from within the site itself, you can speak how you really feel to other fans.
