Title: Chile/Chilli/Chili peppers: What do you grow?
Post by: Mal Brossard on January 27, 2009, 11:14:12 AM
There must be a few amateur horticulturist/botanist chileheads here at HTGTH, right?

So for those like me, what peppers do you grow?  I'm a few weeks away from starting seeds.  Here's what I'm planning on growing:

Red savina
Chocolate habanero
White habanero
Czechoslovakian black
Zimbabwe bird
Yellow rocoto
Tasmanian habanero
Naga jolokia
Tepin
7 Pot
Fatalii

Might also pick up New Mexico Big Jim, orange habanero, Fresno, and serrano as plants rather than seeds.  So the rest of you, what does your pepper garden grow?  And what advice do you have for other growers?

Ohhhh. how cool.

Can you just grow them in your home?

I grow all kinds of stuff. I've got some small peppers that I grow, bell peppers, broccoli, tomatoes and pineapple. I also have a lemon tree.

I used to have a pomegranate plant until a stray cat had his way with it.

I wouldn't mind growing some jalapenos.  In a pot though.  I live in an apartment complex.

Not usually.  Most have to be grown outside.  Unless you have a decent light setup indoors so plants can get a good 12 hours of light a day.

The weather is usually warm enough here that mine can stay outside from mid-March to mid-November.

We recently got some earth boxes a few months ago, anybody else heard of these before? They are awesome.

Just planted my seeds yesterday.  Here's what I'm growing:

10 jalapeno
5 bhut jolokia
3 cayenne
3 Hungarian wax
2 sweet banana
2 Zimbabwe bird
2 Thai extra hot
2 Peruvian white habanero
2 spicy mustard habanero
2 Tasmanian habanero
2 Caribbean red habanero
1 long slim red
1 Santa Fe grande
1 Hungarian black
1 fatalii
1 chocolate habanero

Also bought one Tabasco plant from Wal-Mart.  Got a few of those I might try extras of and a couple I'm waiting on my shipment of seeds for.

If you want to follow my seeds with me, check out my blog, http://texomaheat.blogspot.com

I don't grow 'em, but I have to write an 8 page essay on 'em.

Raspberries, they're always good....our tomatoes however...eh.  a couple of strawberry plants too.  We don't get many...they are small strawberries, but when picked fresh, they are the most amazing tasting strawberries I've ever eaten!

btw Mal, you should let Bumblefoot know...I remember reading once he likes the heat of those hot peppers.  I like some ground red pepper on my food, but I'm not a professional mouth arsonist.

I tried sending him a message on MySpace.  Wouldn't deliver though, apparently he has an away message up and it blocks messages.

Raspberries-- good choice.  I've thought about growing some here as my grandfather grew them for a good 20 years or so after retiring from the copper mines in Michigan.  Not sure how well they would grow here in Texas though.
