Title: US Airways flight down in New York's Hudson River
Post by: jarmo on January 15, 2009, 04:06:38 PM
Emergency officials are responding to a downed plane in the Hudson River in New York City, according to the city fire and police departments. The FAA confirmed US Airways Flight 1549, an Airbus A320 headed from New York's LaGuardia Airport to Charlotte, North Carolina, was down in the river following a failed takeoff. The U.S. Coast Guard said units were also responding, and a ferry on site was dropping life jackets into the water.

I hate flying. Even though I logically understand turbulence, it stills makes me anxious.

I remember watching the terror of the Air Florida Flight 90 as a kid. My father was supposed to be on the flight as we were prepping to move to Florida a the time. Whatever reason, can't remember, he was bumped a week up or a week later. I'll never forget watching that person drown in the river, too cold to hold onto the rescue preserver. The other biggy was the man who dove into the water to save the a woman (think it was a woman), man that shit was heavy.

Hope everybody is ok on this one.

Man, my prayers are with those on the flight.  I can't imagine being in the water on a day like today.

Yes, you would die rather quick I'd imagine. Pretty scary stuff.

Well, they have been pulling people out.

The plan landed in the water and slowly sank, I just hope there weren't a lot of people on that flight and everyone got out.

Pansy-ass Liberal Obama hasn't even denounced the birds responsible for this heinous act!  These Dems are pathetic.

btw, I thought crashing stock markets and planes was supposed to happen  after  Obama took office.

Seriously, glad to see everybody's okay as a result of this accident.  :peace:

The pilot on this plane is an amazing man-he did exactly what he needed to do to get EVERYONE out as safely as possible.

Especially amazing because the temps around here today topped at about 15 degrees.

The birds at LGA are a huge issue.  They have debated trying to eradicate them for a while now.  Hell, everything about that airport is an issue and I would advise anyone flying here to fly into Newark.

What is it with americans and sensationalising things, I'm not trying to be rude or anything but come on,
I get several american stations here at home but for fucks sake if you were to believe those stations, it seems like christ himself has returned to earth that's how frantic they are reporting about this situation.

Uhh, jetliners taking a dive into the drink are pretty big news.

Granted, we could probably use some more updates like on the crisis in Darfur, etc. but it's sort of a big deal in NY.  People kinda get nervous here when they see planes crashing, get it?

I would rather see them broadcasting this and not what Britney Spears did today.

Is it?, It happens quite often but yet american stations don't seem to care as much when it happens in another part of the world.

Granted, we could probably use some more updates like on the crisis in Darfur, etc. but it's sort of a big deal in NY.  People kinda get nervous here when they see planes crashing, get it?

And yes I get that, but why keep on reporting as frantic like they do when it's been made clear that this is not a terrorist attack?

ah well let's just blame it on cultural differences, Guess we are just a bit more level-headed over here.

^So if a plane crashes into the Thames in London, it wouldn't be on multiple news networks?  Just asking.

I have no idea where your "here" is but here we care about our own.  Especially "here" in NY.

Besides, YOU are tuned into an American station for what reason, exactly?  Especially if you think we get "so frantic" over crashing jetliners.  Why not just flip to another channel if you don't care for how we broadcast?

It probably would be, but as soon as it was established that it wasn't a terrotist attack and nobody died in the crash people/news channels over here would probably stop paying attention to it real quick even if it happend in this country.

Again I'm not trying to be disrespectfull or anything, but it seems to me that American stations go into a feeding frenzy whenever something happens.

Why not just flip to another channel if you don't care for how we broadcast?

I'll do ya one better, I turned it off.

Of course not but every time Amy Wino walks out of her house all cracked out it winds up on every website for days on end. ;D

So, in essence you say you would stand by as a catastrophe happens in your own hometown, state, country, whatever, and not give a flying f%%k?

Not to mention, because a potential catastrophe doesn't end in total wreckage, death and disasater that no one should care?

BTW, in response to Grouse's initial complaint, every regular channel here is back to their regularly scheduled programming.  I would imagine CNN and MSNBC are probably still covering this.  I hardly think giving it a few hours of regular time on the airwaves was excessive.

This was a fairly heroic event, it could have gone a terribly different way.

I think it is rather refreshing to see some good, miraculous type news being reported.

I never watch the news because I can't stand the negativity. I think news and media are partly responsible for the world being so negative.

If all people see is horrible shit, u kind of get the impression that everything is bad. The whole If u hang around these types of people u will act like this syndrome.

When u see total strangers helping each other in the time of crisis, that brings back your belief in mankind.

I can not even begin to imagine what would have happened had the pilot lost control of the plane and it crashed into a building.

would have been panic city.

luckily, don't have to worry about it  : ok:  amazing story, can't wait to hear the pilots take on it all.  also liked how quickly all of the boats came to the rescue.
