Post by: jarmo on March 27, 2008, 08:36:18 PM
I am very pleased to announce that Guns N' Roses and I are now represented by the management team of Irving Azoff and Andy Gould. We are very excited and look forward to working with them and hope our relationship proves beneficial for everyone, especially the fans.

Understood, but obviously there is some benefit seen to Axl and GN'R in that or else there wouldn't have been a public acceptance and endorsement of the promotion.

Irving Azoff is a famous music industry manager of bands/singers such as Jewel, The Eagles, Bush, REO Speedwagon, Dan Fogelberg, Seal, Journey, Christina Aguilera, Alter Bridge, Van Halen and Steely Dan.

In the 70s, his management style was characterized by complex manipulations and dramatic about-faces that he and his clients seemed to find much more humorous than his opponents. Even during his decade as head of MCA, he was known to be fiercely loyal to his former clients, many of whom have returned now that he is back on the management side. His most famous quote is "I never met an asshole in the record business I didn't like."

No and no.

Whatever man.  That statement on the website is an endorsement and/or appreciation of what Dr. Pepper did.  It could benefit the band, and already has to some extent, in a promotional capacity.  The band and its management are obviously intelligent individuals.  They have to be cognizant, even if they don't acknowledge it publicly, of the potential benefit to Guns N' Roses.

Just like they are cognizant of the benefit of being aligned with a famous and reputable manager like Irving Azoff.  That is why you do something like that and announce it in an enthusiastic way.  You feel and believe it will be beneficial to you and your organization.

And, I'm sure it will.  Irving Azoff is a fucking legend.  This is great for GN'R!  It certainly can't be bad to have a heavy hitter like this on board.

AXL ROSE Signs With SCOTT WEILAND's Management - Mar. 27, 2008

GUNS N' ROSES frontman Axl Rose has made the following announcement:

"I am very pleased to announce that GUNS N' ROSES and I are now represented by the management team of Irving Azoff and Andy Gould. We are very excited and look forward to working with them and hope our relationship proves beneficial for everyone, especially the fans."

It is interesting to note that up until recently, Azoff Music also managed VELVET REVOLVER, the band featuring Axl's former GN'R bandmates Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum. Azoff is continuing to represent VR's singer, Scott Weiland, an Azoff spokesperson confirmed to BLABBERMOUTH.NET.

According to a press release, the Dr. Pepper soft drink company has promised a free can of its signature soda to "everyone in America" if GUNS N' ROSES releases its long-delayed new album, "Chinese Democracy", in 2008. Dr. Pepper director of marketing Jaxie Alt said in a statement, "It took a little patience to perfect Dr. Pepper's special mix of 23 ingredients, which our fans have come to know and love. So we completely understand and empathize with Axl's quest for perfection ? for something more than the average album. We know once it's released, people will refer to it as 'Dr Pepper for the ears'because it will be such a refreshing blend of rich, bold sounds ? an instant classic."

Axl Rose responded in a statement: "We are surprised and very happy to have the support of Dr. Pepper with our album, 'Chinese Democracy', as for us this came totally out of the blue. If there is any involvement with this promotion by our record company or others, we are unaware of such at this time."

"Chinese Democracy" has reportedly been in the works since 1995, with Rose the only original member still in the band. According to a report published two years ago by the New York Times, Rose had allegedly burned through $13 million in the studio by that point.

Although a revamped GUNS lineup toured successfully in 2006 and Rose tentatively promised that the record would be out last March, it never materialized and little has been heard about it since.

Jarmo, I will concede that I certainly have a habit of overanalyzing things :)

However, I do not think that the Dr. Pepper thing was orchestrated by GN'R or the label, nor I do feel there is any connection between the two stories.

I merely think that one may serve to be a very big and beneficial promotional vehicle should the album drop this year and the other is a very positive thing given Mr. Azoff's reputation and history with very successful acts.

In short, I'm excited as a fan by an interesting couple of days and I do have a habit of overanalyzing, particularly in a state of excitement.

So..in light of everything that has gone down in the last week or so, everything - VR breaking up, Dr P, Axl joining Scott's management team.....I'm thinkin' - VR & GnR are going to team up (under one management), CD will be released, they'll all go out on tour, together,  to promote it - with Dr P's sponsorship & financial backing.

(In regards to all this good news.)

Axl wouldn't have chosen Azoff and Gould if he thought they wouldn't be good towards the fans.  Every move seems to have been well thought out.  Measure twice, cut once.  :smoking:

I'm not saying the announcement means we WILL....but I think it's an important cog in the machine.

he's better off not talking about the damn cd t'ill it's on it's way, cuz no one would belive him anyway

I know that alot of people have pointed it out, but I just wanna say again that the part that makes me most happy is the "especially for the fans" bit. Actions speak louder than words though so I'm hoping we see something cool happen sooner then later.

Who was managing the band since the parted ways with Merck?

Good to know they've got a respected team to guide them into the future now.  Full speed ahead!

I thought she was Axl's personal assistant.  If she was in a management role, my comment in no way was meant to disrespect her (I know she posts here on occasion).  Just the fact that this new group has been through the mill so to speak with other big name bands.  That's a great sign.

I hope they can get Axl behind a computer now and then to inform us...
I would love if the website(gnr.com) would get a page or so to keep us updated about the procces and stuff. just to see a glimp of history in the making called Chinese democracy and the other albums

That would be cool, but I think this forum has done a good job over the past 11 years covering the making of the album.  Last heard, the ALBUM IS DONE, just waiting to be released!  11 years sounds so long, but hit really flown by!

More great news.  What a week.

I think when you're represented by a management team with the reputation that these guys have, you're more likely to get the record company to deliver the goods for you.

What is the role of management?  They don't book shows do they?  Are they the agent that brokers deals with touring companies and record companies?  Do they make sure the band is taken care of?  Do they make decisions for the band, or is that all Axl?  Do they handle promotion and help select first single?  Do they make sure Axl has sushi in dressing room?

Sure, I see what you're saying.  But management can only do so much if the record company isn't behind an album.  And if the material on the album is kind of weak, there's only so much anyone can do.

no ? for what i've seen, there weren't too much promotion about their second LP and their singles, but maybe i'm wrong...

They have been on many famous Late Night Shows (best promotion for any band), all Music stations from TV to Radio, many magazines, they did a live special on MySpace , etc etc etc... then Slash went on a long mediavvhore campaign about his book, Guitar Hero 3 and signature guitars which he still on, it was all over the place.

Yet the album was flushed down the toilet by fans... not because of lack of promotion but because of lack of quality  : ok:

And MeanBone, get over it  :peace:

Title: Re: Axl announces new management for Guns N' Roses

i don't mean it like that, it's nothing more that a joke on how we got the previous tour and how we're here now with something in common.

If anything i love this band, more than any previous member, but i didn't mean it as disrespect to Rich, Robin nor Bumble in way...

Just a giggle... sure humour can be questioned and what strikes me as funny may seem downright stupid to someone else, but it wasn't meant to be analized so deeply!

well i'm sorry if i offended anyone with that post, it really wasn't my idea of fun to that.

lack of quality ? it was much better than the first one and selled less.
slash promoted himself, and in other countries than USA, velvet revolver is kind of an anonymous thing.

anyway, this is cool to see there's a real new management, and i hope the problems with the record company are solved.

This is exciting news.  And lets just remember that whether its musicians, actors, or global corporations, we the public are told only what they want us to know.  We can take Axl's at face value that they had nothing to do with the Dr. Pepper promo but to emphatically deny that it is even possible that there is a tie in here is ignorant.  For example, Nikki Sixx has denied many rumors over time regarding Motley Crue that turned out to be true later on.

Anyway, looking forward to more exciting news this year!

Title: Re: Axl announces new management for Guns N' Roses

axl is not nikki.
If there had been a tie beforehand, both dr pepper and  axl would have gone like 'we're  pleased to announce that...'

I just see the dr pepper thing was popped up when gnr was about to announce its new management team.

Could this be the start of some promotion???

Frist dr.pepper gets in.  and I don't care if gnr and management didn't know about it
but let's look it at this.

dr. pepper does his thing but axl could take advantage of it by asking them for gnr promotional cans or whatso ever.

2) New management.
axl's silence is over 2 post in one week wow.

3) radio stations are playing Twat and CD again after they have been told not to in 2006-07

The whole last week news was all over the world even in holland

BUILD UP THAT HYPE IT"S THE BEST TIMING!

If nothing else... it's nice to know that Axl will have some serious firepower on his side when it comes to Universal and getting the album out. My big fear was that Universal was basically just going to sit on CD for awhile and push Axl and Beta around as some kind of sick revenge grudge... seems a lot less likely now.

On the other hand... for all I know, getting high quality reliable representation (as opposed to Universal having to deal with Axl, Beta and all their eccentricities directly) may have been a pre-condition for Universal to agree to move forward with CD. Either way... great news.

Excellent news.  Hell, any news is good news, you know?  It's great to see progress, and to have GnR showing up all over the place (makes me thirsty for a Dr. Pepper, in fact).

I find it interesting, however, to hear that GnR and Axl are *both* being managed by Azoff and Gould.  I understand it, but I've always thought of Axl and GnR as one entity, so it's weird to read them of them as separate, if that makes any sense.

Hopefully, more good things will continue to happen for Axl, the band, and the fans...

I am very pleased to announce that Guns N? Roses and I..

The wording sounds kinda weird. Why separate Guns N'Roses and I (Axl, himself). The only real part (in the eye's of many) remaining of Guns N'Roses is Axl Rose. He def should have dropped the I, and stuck with just Guns N'Roses. Not unless he (Axl) see's it that way, Himself and another entity he labels Guns N'Roses  :peace:

There are many bands that have members who are managed by several different people. I think he we just making sure people know they're all managed by the same person.

Of course, but while GN'R was without a manager my believe and impression is that she took on the role as manager while they were looking for something permanent?

She has done quite a bit of press in this period too hasn't she?... And that is something she didn't do much before.

Edit: Wonder if the lack of proper heavy management has had any serious impact on the release issue? Not saying that Beta is a sub par manager or anything like that...

Things do seem to be moving. But we've been down this road before. It definitely is good news, though.

Call me naive, but I think this is the "real deal".

I think so too.  With these guys resumes, they certainly have their shit together and the credentials to back it up.

I bet Axl is breathing a real sigh of relief right now!  I am so glad for them that they got this new team.

Here's a quote from the new managers, Irving Azoff and Andy Gould:

"Axl Rose and Guns N Roses is and will always be one of the most important recording and touring artists of our time, and one of the great rock n roll voices for his generation. We are honored that Axl has placed his trust in us."

Irving/Andy

Awesome. Thanks Jarmo. It's nice to hear from them and they should know they are very welcome in the GNR family! :)

If anyone thinks that a manager of Irving Azoff's track record would agree to work with GN'R if he didn't think they would be successful, then they need to take a closer look at his resume.

Completely agree with you, Ali, and let's hope those (particularly in the media) still insisting that the album will never be released get this message too.  : ok:

"We are honoured that Axl has placed his trust in us."  My first thought to this was, "And so you should be!"    ;D

Second, more considered, thoughts, pointed out to me that in their first sentence, they had encapsulated precisely how I feel about Axl and Guns N' Roses and that if they genuinely believe this, then here are two people who are far more than just financial experts; they actually understand the essence of GNR.

Way back when Axl began rebuilding GNR some of us believed in his ability to do just that and trusted his judgement on the way forward.  Axl repaid our trust by assembling a band that exudes energy and feeds on the chemistry of the creative souls within it in order to produce music of outstanding quality and emotional resonance.  In touring and making this music public, Axl (GNR) trusted that there'd be elements of the old fanbase that would understand, appreciate his vision and enjoy being part of the ride again.  This time we were able to repay that trust and make the 06/07 tour the success it deserved to be.  It felt like our instincts were leading us on the right path and now it seems like another piece of the jigsaw has slotted into place.

However, as easily as the words 'trust' and 'belief' trip off the tongue, they cannot convey even an ounce of the emotional highs and lows of the past decade of GNR's history, nor can they account for why so many fans continue to support the band.  That's what the music is for and that's why I think we are all still here.

Is Axl "one of the great rock 'n' roll voices for his generation"?  Absolutely, without question.  And yet, his influence and appeal doesn't end there because during the tour I witnessed a younger generation discovering this band and embracing it with all the fervour and intensity of their older associates.

So, as long as Axl can keep the candle burning and the management team exercise both their business muscle and imagination, then the legend will continue to dazzle.*   :D

Irving/andy, managers of AXL & GNR... not Manager of Finck, Dizzy, Toomy, etc.

I believe it means they represent GN'R as a whole as well as Axl personally.

Tommy, Dizzy, Robin, Chris, Richard, Ron and Frank are all part of GN'R.

My guess is that, for example things having to do with Dizzy's current tour, won't be handled by Irving Azoff and/or Andy Gould because it's not about GN'R.

With a company slogan like this, how can Axl and the band go wrong?

Azoff and Gould.........."We work our Az off, so everything we touch turns to Gould!"   :hihi:

My advice for management would be to get some new merchandise out there already!  I've wanted to buy GNR stuff for the past 7 years.  Aside from some kick-ass concerts and concert tees, I'm left wantin more.  Pardon my bitching.  :peace:

Today I was at the mall and hit Spencer's.  They still have those old Appetite logo bar glasses...although one of the 4 was cool (it had the UYI album cover) I want more!

I'm sure we've got a lot of great stuff coming up very soon.

Great point. I think everyone knows that Axl was going through a kind of "rough" patch appearance wise in 01-02... and yet these are the photos that are always used. Very annoying... and I suspect... intentional. He looked so much better in 2006-07. The 87-93 photos are always awesome... but they tend to call attention back to the old band and are just generally "dated" at this point anyway.

As posted above, an updated photo set with the full band for promotional purposes would be a great idea.

This hasn't been stated in either Axl's statement or the Azoff/Gould statement, but I wonder, do people think that Azoff/Gould would ask to hear the album before agreeing to manage the band?

I would want to know exactly what GN'R was trying to get released to ascertain how successful it could be for them, and subsequently myself as the manager.

I mean, this guy Irving Azoff has managed some really successful artists.  It's so many successful artists that I think he could have his pick of who to manage and consequently wouldn't manage anyone that he didn't think could be successful and bring him success.

Funny. That's the first question I had in my mind. My guess would be yes. Axl/GN'R don't do a lot of "other" events, records, dvd's, movies etc... and there's no imminent reunion. So they pretty much must be managing Axl/GN'R primarily b/c of Chinese Democracy... and that being the case... I'm sure they would have wanted to hear it before agreeing to the representation.

So, IMHO this management agreement is potentially a very good sign about CD's "quality"... at least in the eyes of these two industry veterans.

It does seem kind of strange that this incarnation of the band has been touring off and on since 2000 and there's still not a studio press shot of them. When it does happen, I think it will go a long way to dispelling the image of this as 'Axl and the other guys' rather than a bona fide band.

This has like a 0.000000000000000000000001% chance of happening, but a release date announcement on Tuesday (yes, April Fools) would cap all of this off perfectly, especially if the headline confirmed it wasn't a joke.

It won't happen, but just saying.

I may be going out on a limb here but I wouldn't be surprised if we get a release date in may with the album dropping in July.  With the new management I think the neogations will go rather quickly or who knows those could be done.  with little left to do !!

I don't know, maybe a single this summer isn't too much to hope for. I just can't imagine that after all this time, C.D. would be anything other than a Fall release.

Time will tell. At least the wheels finally seem to be turning again.

true but only time will tell, and until we hear something direct from gnrs new management..
only then we can assume and presume the best  :hihi:

Everything is lining up nicely.  We know the album is done, as in really, actually done.  Axl has been negotiating with the label.  Now there is a top flight management team in place.  I know we've said this before but I think this is actually the year.  Plus Axl said he'd share is DP with Buckethead so that alone says it will be coming out in 2008  :hihi:

I don't think that this changes much as far as communications go.  I'm sure Axl doesn't want to make any announcements about CD until all plans are finalized and set in motion.  So when we hear something still all depends on where things are at with negotiations.  But the good news is that having good management should make that process go more quickly, as this is what they do, while what Axl does best is make music and rock the fuck out!

I wouldn't like to guess.  These news guys could come in and want to totally change things up.   That could mean another few years.  Or maybe they're just here to add some finishing touches and we'll see news in the next month or two.   I wouldn't like to guess.

If Axl can't cut a deal with Mr Iovine, him and the new management team need to shop the Chinese recording sessions and potential Gnr tours to Live Nation. Work a deal where Live Nation settles the account with Uni, then cuts a new deal with the new Gnr. On top of that, Axl could try to put together a reunion deal as a part of another contract with Live Nation. The reunion deal would possibly help solidify a better contract for the new band...as a way to entice Live Nation to pay for the albums-recording of them, promotion, etc. Sounds insane but Axl could have his cake and eat it too if he really wanted too. Ahhh, I 'm just dreaming but he COULD do both if he really wanted. :P

Wonder what Mysteron has to say about all this new activity thats been happening. You would think that negotiations are over by now.

Why would you think that?  I think that now that there's a real management team in place, the real negotiations may just be getting started.  But hopefully they can be completed now in a reasonable amount of time.

Regarding a reunion tour - I really really really can't see that happening in the foreseeable future. There is no way that Axl would tour, yet again, with the original line up until the new line up is finished. If the reunion thing does happen, I see it being years in the future after maybe 2 or 3 albums with the new line up when that finally ends. Then we'll see a reunion thing similar to the way Led Zep did recently where they'll only play a few shows and tickets will cost hundreds.

I know this is off topic slightly but just replying to the quote above.

To some degree, these guys have given Axl the creditability that he's been after, touring, great shows and step into the 21st century, a big departure from 1990's.

At best I could see the odd old member playing a number or two at a show or two, but nothing long term or all together, but hayhoo, this is Gn'R land where anything is possible...

After the (first?) album comes out, who knows how long its going to go from there.

We can only hope that all the speculation about 3 or 4 successive albums coming out thereafter is true and hopefully by that time there will be no further delays or issues coming up once everything is settled before "Chinese Democracy" comes out.

Axl is getting older yes but I think he will have at least one or two more world tours in him.

From eonline.com...in part:

New Music from Guns N' Roses

Guns N' Roses fans, the more-than-a-decade-in the-making album Chinese Democracy really does seem to be getting very close to a release date.

No, really. This is what I'm hearing:

Axl Rose & Co. have recently been letting people, music industry honchos, tastemakers and so forth, listen to six new tracks, according to a music executive who has heard the songs.

The exec raved about the music. ?It?s really good,? he said. ?Axl?s voice sounds exactly the same, but the songs sound contemporary.

Reps didn?t talk about exact release dates, according to my source, but they implied it could still happen by the end of the year. (Yes, I know we've heard this before.)

Just last week, Rose announced on the official Guns N? Roses website that the band hired a new management team headed by heavyweights Irving Azoff and Andy Gould.

The band?s last original recordings, Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II, were released in 1991. Since their debut in 1985, they have sold an estimated 90 million albums worldwide.

AFD: 15

UYI 1: 7.5

TSI?: 1
Live Era: Gold
GH: 4

But 90 million is the generally accepted number of units sold across the world.

Anyway the bolded portion is awesome, wouldn't expect anything less from Uncle Axl.

Contemporary...........hmmmm.. I don't know if that is a good word to use.  Who knows what songs he heard, but I wouldn't call "Chinese Democracy" a contemporary tune.  Or "IRS"....  I bet all he heard was Madagascar and Cather in the Rye, cause everything else rocks the fuck out.

amen to that. No pepper for madagas.
By that time,  it will be a reunion, if any, of this band, ie Chinese democracy one.

Contemporary...........hmmmm.. I don't know if that is a good word to use.

Why not? You prefer music that sounds dated?

Like when everybody started using that vocoder effect on their songs because Cher had a hit song where they used one.

/jarmo

I didn't know you were such a big Cher fan!

Jarmo <3 Cher!

Of course the music has to sound somewhat contemporary!!!!!!!!

Contemporary, just sounds sterile and boring.  I just would want Guns N' Roses to be anything but "contemporary".  Are we talking about Elton John or Guns N F'N Roses.  Maybe I am confused as to what "contemporary" means.  I always think of the Adult Contemporary radio station where they play John Tesh or Tori Amos.  I guess the Killers would be Contemporary.  I know what you mean Jarmo, I don't want dated.  But that term doesn't really apply to GNR.  Cause GNR has never been a band that plays for the current time.  Axl's music is timeless anyway.  You know?

Man, I seriously think that the record exec who heard the tracks just meant that the tunes don't sound dated, like Poison sounds dated.  I don't think he meant they sounded like the Killers or like Adult Contemporary, but just like a fresh, vibrant, evolution of Guns N' Roses.

THANK GOD!!!!!!!!!  I HOPE YOU GUYS SEE WHERE I TOOK THAT THE WRONG WAY.  I just never really heard of a hard rock band's music be called that before, especially GNR.

I'm yet to be convinced that the writer actually heard these things from the execs  ::)
and that this gossip has to be discussed in two threads.

He quoted one exec directly.  How else is he to prove he heard those things?

I don't think it's pure gossip when he has an actual source who heard the songs being played.  It'd be one thing if he heard from someone who heard from someone, etc., but that isn't the case here.

For obvious reasons, that cant be stated , as then he will be hassled by email etc by every gnr fan to find out more about chinese democracy,
such as the 6 songs they heard, etc....

what's the name of the writer?

dont know, not really important though..

Exactly!  There is a very plausible and understandable reason why the exec wouldn't want to go on record.

The writer's name and picture are at the top of the E! Online article page.  His name is Marc Malkin.

Guys, calm down...

First of all, when someone is expecting a "trainwreck" and he finds the music contemporary and not dated, it's FUCKIN' GOOD!!!

Second, it's E!online, why would they post such a thing about Guns N' Roses in 2008 if it isn't true?

The wheels are turning...

It's just not the weekend if the GNR fan base isn't banging on your door.  That's two in a row for new management.  Welcome to camp guys!  You might want to give that Tommy cd another listen--lol.  And buy the large size bottle of asprin.

Of the E! Online planet gossip. Jimmy iovine didn't seem to mind the said hassles in 2006.

Yes I believe a free can of dr pepper in the us and Chinese democracy in 2008. because axl is trying to make it happen.
Yep execs must have heard the album and loved it.
Nothing new.

Like the word recently, how recent it is?

I've seen NYT carry sloppy article.
I'd take a sourceless story with a grain of salt. This is not from GNR camp, Mysteron or my friends.
