A little more information:

GUNS N' ROSES frontman Axl Rose performed Saturday (Nov. 11) at the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research fundraising dinner at The Waldorf-Astoria in New York City, titled "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Cure Parkinson's..." Martin Scorsese and Muhammad Ali co-chaired the event, which was slated to feature additional performances by Sheryl Crow and Rob Thomas.

If he was asked and agreed to go then that is a tremendous job on his part - Interesting how M.Fox has become the face
of this disease now -

As for A.Rose:
Let's see:? 4 years ago, he played MSG and either went to a club and saw S.Seymour and went into hibernation, went to a club and they did'nt like his dead animals, he could'nt get past the fact that the Lakers lost, or the demon-fire marshall from Maine was waiting for him in Philly?

compared to this year - He plays MSG and then appears at a wonderful gathering the next day -

The dude's different nowadays - the shows are solid - just get off the guy's back, stop the bitching and prepare for the album,
I guess

haha, yeah things were pretty slow there in the late 90's/early 2000's.  It was good, though, because it gave him an opportunity to tell me all his sordid tour stories from the uyi tours and hear some good dirt on what went on in the band...things that shall never be repeated here or anywhere else.

He can't talk very easily - like you said, very few words at a time, it seems to be an effort, and he's a little difficult to understand. But he's still all in there. A fantastic, amazing guy.

These pictures rule. Absolutely awesome. And way to go, Axl.  : ok:

Awesome!!  Huge props to Axl for doing this.  The pics with him and Michael J. Fox are pretty cool.  Parkinson's is a bad fucking disease and needs all the attention it can get.  It has pretty much destroyed a few lives in my family already.  Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if we got some audio of this performance, as benefits are almost always recorded in some form or another.  Again, another great Axl moment.  This and the one earlier this year when he was hanging out with those kids with Cancer, are two moments that earn Axl that much more respect from me.

I don't think anyone on this forum thinks there's something funny about this disease.
Axl the Red just said it would be awkward if something like that happened.
I'm sure he didn't mean to offend anyone.

See I love to see these positive things, that Axl does. Parkinsons is a very scary disease and I feel for those who have to suffer with it. Axl is class act for making a appearance.  : ok:

Woah! This is some great news to wake up to. There are many fantastic causes in the world and campaigning for Parkinsons is certainly one of them. I know someone who has the disease so fair play to anyone who supports in any shape or form. Once again it shows that Axl has a great heart. Yet another positive thing about the man and the band and the whole GnR thing! Add in the fact that there is a photo of Axl Rose and Mohammed Ali. Now that is a moment to remember. Mike? ?

Thanks Axl.

I just think that thisis proof positive of what a good person can be like when he is surrounded by the right people. Guns today is a group of stand up people with families and a genuine desire to express their articticc vision without having to tear their lives and everyone else around thems lives up in the process. No offense to the old band, but we all go through that crazy stage in our lives, some more than others.

Ax has always struck me as a genuine, and decent cat. And now, older, wiser and surrounded by people that bring him up and not down, you get to see what he probably would have been doing more of before if circumstances had allowed for it. The visit to the cancer clinic was wonderful of him, my mother died of it and its a horrob;e disease. My grandmother died with parkinson's and it too, is a horrible disease.

Anyway, usually I think good people do good things and don't necessarily need to be congratulated for it, but suffice it to say that my childhood hero seems to be eveything I always believed about him 20 years ago and now the rest of the world is seeing it. To paraphrase an earlier poster, aren't you glad you can say you were a fan since day 1?

Peace, guys, have a good Sunday.

I dont think the "you're gonna die" line was at all necessary, and i didnt find it funny at all.  Maybe because I have a close friend with Parkinsons.  It was pretty insensitive.  and I dont want anyone to tell me to "lighten up" thanks.

But...  moving on from that, I think its wonderful that axl was there.  A great piece of news to read this morning - thank you for the info and great pics.  AXl and michael J - awesome.  seriously nice thing to do, axl.

It's good to see Axl's having a good time. New York really seems to influence him in a positive way and I hope we'll get more news of that kind in future as well!!

I don?t think Axl needs to be said how nice he is for doing this kind of stuff. He?s always done it, what happens is that most of the time it isn?t made public. I think he does this stuff from the heart and not to get publicity.

More likely Back In The USSR. ?You realise in the photos of his performance, he's straining like when his voice is really going for it? ?Come Together doesn't require that amount of effort. ?But when he does Back In The USSR, it does.

The Fab Faux is more than just a cover band - they recreate not just the music, but all the subtle layers and background sounds, and they do it all live.  They're made up of a bunch of studio pros from Conan O'Brien and Letterman, and they approach recreating Beatles songs with the same precision that orchestras approach symphonies.  I heard them on Howard Stern once and they are INCREDIBLE, and one of the toughest tickets to get becase they only perform sporadically.  Hearing a boot of this would really be something.

As an aside; why does axl shake hands like he's expecting to be simultaneously hit with a left hook?

Awsome Pics. Axl must have been thrilled to meet a legend like Ali. Even meeting M.J.F. must have been very cool. Parkinsons is another reason that Bush should not even be in office. To have a President who is against stem cell research is what is stopping us from curing this horrible disorder. Bush is turning out to be the worst President ever. Thank God this is his last term.

Shoeboy517 is right the Fab Faux is absolutely jaw-dropping in their ability to recreate the most intricate of Beatles tunes live. Abbey Road being my fave Beatles album I have to wonder what tune Axl did, there are so many good ones that he could really kick ass on.

Most republicans are completely anti-stem cell research. However Bush is not. He said himself, he's for stem-cell research on existing embryos. He just doesn't want people to start creating test-tube embryos just for stem-cell research, only to be disposed of afterwards.

I think Bush has probably spent more on Stem Cell Research than any other president in history.

Stem cell research barely existed before Bush became the president, so that doesn't mean a whole lot.

At any rate, nice to see Axl doing a gig like this. Anyone interested in Mohammed Ali should watch the documentary "When We Were Kings". A stunning film. I am also a big fan of Denis Leary, who is hilarious, along with Michael J. Fox so I love these pics.

I am a bit surprised no info has surfaced yet regarding how many songs Axl did, or which ones. It does seem likely that it would probably be a Beatles song from Abbey Road, considering the poster. Octopus's Garden, perhaps? ?:hihi:

This is a great thing supporting such a worthy cause.  Unfortunately I doubt we'll see coverage of this event in the press like we just saw about the cancelation of the Portland show.  Why does the press focus so much on negativity?  It frustrates me to no end.

The press always focuses on the negativity, no matter what Star/celebrity it is. I guess most people find a story about a cancelled show that makes Axl look bad more interesting than they do a charity event.

Well, it could have been anything from Abbey Road.  I Want You would be fun.

As I said pages ago, I bet it's Come Together.  It totally fits the situation and Axl has performed the song already.  Plus, it's the first song on Abbey Road and it was written by John Lennon which makes it that much better.  My money is definitely on Come Together.  GUARANTEED!

No they're not.  There were two here last week that weren't.

And also - why would there be a press release?  Ugh - sometimes you guys are so unrealistic.  What do you want the media to say?  "Axl shows up at a benefit!"  It's cool for us and all, but to the rest of the world it's just a small blip that nobody cares about.

What benefits weren't recorded??  If there are famous performers that are performing at a benifit, IT WILL BE RECORDED!!!!!!  Just because we don't see it, doesn't mean it's not recorded.  Like this benefit wouldn't be recorded... that's unrealistic.  I'm sure there wasn't one fucking video camera recording the whole time... ok, you're right.  WHATEVER.

EDIT:  AND Axl wasn't the only one performing if you were reading ANY of the thread.  Sheryl Crow and Rob Thomas were there as well.  But nobody but us cares about that, right??  You're funny and all you really need is some common sense because you obviously think that if you aren't seeing or hearing the recording, that it doesn't exist.  WHICH IS WRONG.  You are "unrealistic".

As an aside; why does axl shake hands like he's expecting to be simultaneously hit with a left hook?

Seriously on a side note. Fuck off! This is a great thread about a very serious charity and about people giving their time to it. Please done turn it into another one of these: 'Why is Axl doing something like this thread?'. For fucks sake you would not analyse it if joe bloggs walking down the road shook hands in a certain way. Leave the bloke alone and let him get on with his thing and appreciate this thread for what its worth, which is a great charity and it just so happens to be our favourite singer who happens to be there! Mike

Are you kidding? Yes, this is a thread about a charity, but had Axl not shown up at that charity, I seriously doubt there would be threads started in any other sub-forum about this. Photos show he didn't used to shake hands this way, now he does, we're discussing Axl's involvment, he did this while being involved, thus people are well within their rights to discuss it. People need to chill and stop unnecessarily policing other people's tangents.? : ok:

I'll stop the discussion, because I think we're saying the same thing.

The event MIGHT have been, and PROBABLY was recorded.  But that doesn't mean it's going to get out to the public.  There aren't Axl Rose fanboys at these events with their little camcorders, waiting to post videos of the performance on YouTube.  Most likely footage like that will be for next year's "Look what a great event we had last year!" presentation.

I'm just saying that we shouldn't expect a press release or a recording to surface, because most of the time these are pretty private events, attended by people who have tons of money to spend.

Regardless, there's one thing that this thread does say. ?It says that CD could very well come out without any notice. ?Alot of times people on here say that if the CD was being pressed at a factory somewhere, we would know about it. ?I've never beleived that theory. ?Axl Rose performs at a big benefit last night with thousands of people in the nation's biggest city and nobody even knows what song he performed. ?It's been 24 hours and we don't know something as seemingly simple as that. ?

I was never talking about a fan recording this.  I have been talking about professional camera men.  I'm sure it was recorded for news purposes because I would think that they would want this event (and disease) to have as much publicity as possible.  Part of a benefit is to make people more aware of whatever the subject for it may be and I think we will see something on video.  I doubt we will have a whole Axl performance, but we may get clips of it.  Now we are on the same page and I'm sorry for my last post, which has since been deleted by me.

Ok, I was trying to be nice but you're being dick, so that didn't last long.  I don't recall ever talking about bootlegs of the benefit, so you made that one up yourself.  Also, Axl was performing with a Beatles COVER BAND that performs songs from Abbey Road, so are you saying that he performed a new GN'R song??  Is that why we don't know about it??  It must be a big secret or something because it was a new GN'R song??  Wow, you're in you're own world I guess.

Sorry lennon, not trying to be a dick.  Just a little tired of all the "secrecy" on stuff, and then everybody expecting a press release everytime Axl breathes somewhere.  Didn't mean to direct it at you, but I re-read your earlier post where you said you weren't going to "stoop to my level," or something like that, so I just reacted.

Anyway, you're right - I hope a video does show up, or at least we find out the song.   Either way, it was for a good cause, and he should be commended.

Cocainetongue22 has said it all...

I do hope that these words make their up to uncle Axl, that would be great  :)

PS: Hey Beta, Boqueirao is in the house!

I was thinking that it could be that cuz it's one of the former Beatle's songs... but at a Parkinson's benefit, I didn't think Live and Let DIE would really be appropriate... but it's cool...

Guys, let's not talk politics in this thread. Thanks. Back to the topic.

Politics is the point of this thread.

Axl performed at this benefit for a reason. Not for publicity.

Michael J. Fox is trying to get more backing to stem-cell research, which currently is a hot topic in POLITICS.

There's no reason why people can't talk about the performance by Axl, and the actual POINT of him being there.

I'm sure it was recorded for news purposes because I would think that they would want this event (and disease) to have as much publicity as possible.? Part of a benefit is to make people more aware of whatever the subject for it may be and I think we will see something on video.? I doubt we will have a whole Axl performance, but we may get clips of it.? Now we are on the same page and I'm sorry for my last post, which has since been deleted by me.

Actually, this wasn't that type of a charity event.? This is an annual bash put together strictly as a cash grab.? It's not publicized at all.? Very wealthy supporters are offered the chance to buy tickets at something like $5000 a pop to mingle with celebrities.? It's possible that the celebs also pay, seeing as there's no shortage of them more than willing to attend this type of private event and have a good time while supporting a good cause, and MJF has a LOT of friends.?

Axl really doesn't deserve all these accolades for simply showing up, although it's the presence of the celebs that draws the rich folk, so he's certainly contributing, but it's no different that his usual social life of late -- partying with the beautiful people.? It's better, he can eat amazing food, drink champagne and because it's private, he can cut loose on a Beatles song with a live band in a room full of peers.? He's not exactly putting himself out.? This isn't exactly a visit to a cancer ward or adopting a kid from Somalia.?? ;D? But I would think (or at least hope) that Axl (and entourage) also paid for the privilege of being there.? (I guess it would be tacky to mention it's also tax deductible?)? And I'm sure Axl (very) quietly supports other endeavors more deserving of a round of applause.?

If it was filmed, it won't be seen anytime soon.? They've been staging this thing for years (virtually unannounced), and I don't think I've ever seen any footage.

Regardless, there's one thing that this thread does say.? It says that CD could very well come out without any notice.? Alot of times people on here say that if the CD was being pressed at a factory somewhere, we would know about it.? I've never beleived that theory.? Axl Rose performs at a big benefit last night with thousands of people in the nation's biggest city and nobody even knows what song he performed.? It's been 24 hours and we don't know something as seemingly simple as that.?

Edit to respond to this one...

I would think the Fox Foundation gig is done with the cooperation of the media.? The photographers were invited guests who probably paid their way in as well, the columnists and mag editors who can afford to be there would be welcome, but as Jarmo would say, they were probably 'asked nicely' and happily covered it by the rules.? The chances of the music press doing the same with a Guns N' Roses CD are somewhere between nil and zero.? ?When that CD is being prepared for release by the label, everybody's going to know.?

Michael J. Fox Rocks with Sheryl Crow, Axl Rose at Fundraiser
MONDAY NOVEMBER 13, 2006 08:45AM EST

By Mark Dagostino

Michael J. Fox raised more than $5 million for his Foundation for Parkinson's Research at a Beatles-themed fundraiser in Manhattan on Saturday night, thanks to a crowd that included emcee Denis Leary, Sheryl Crow, Martin Scorsese, Mohammed Ali, Famke Janssen, Rob Thomas and Susan Sarandon.

Rose, a surprise guest, took the stage at the Waldorf-Astoria Ballroom to sing McCartney's "Live and Let Die." Why the performance? "Michael had asked," Rose told PEOPLE. "We actually used a sample of Michael J. Fox from (his film) Casualties of War in one of our songs that will be on the new album. So I felt, one, I've always been a fan of his. And I also feel for the guy and his situation. I'm for stem-cell research, so I just thought it would be wrong not for me to come when I was asked."

Elvis Costello attended with wife Diana Krall, who's due to give birth in December. "But it's twins," said Krall, "so maybe sooner!"

Fox's wife Tracy Pollan said the annual fundraiser got a shot in the arm from last week's wins by Democrats ? and candidates favoring stem-cell research: "It definitely has an extra little feeling of excitement. But this is always a really important night, and a really fun night for us."

Pollan also said she was "sort of floored" by Rush Limbaugh's accusation that Fox exaggerated his symptoms in a campaign ad."But having watched (Limbaugh) before, maybe not as surprised as maybe I would've hoped to have been. Actually, the first thing I thought was this is really going to turn on him ? which it did."

Crow, who sang the Beatles' "Blackbird" and "Eight Days a Week," told PEOPLE, "I'm really here to celebrate what Michael J. Fox is doing and what he's done so far, and the great hope he's giving everyone."

She added, "I'm so lucky, because I am now a breast cancer survivor. Obviously only six months, but I believe that I'm cancer free. (In Michael) we're watching somebody who's really fighting for his life, and the fact that he's sharing that with us I think motivates the best part of all of us to really tap into the human spirit and feel that kind of empathy and want to do something about it."

On a personal note, Crow revealed, "I'm dating." Anyone we should know? "I always feel like it's no one anyone should ever know," she said, laughing. "I like to keep my secrets."

For his part, Fox was just excited to know he had some effect on politics. "In the last week of the election, when people are chucking garbage around and it's the most brutal part of the campaign, people were actually talking about stem cells," he said. "Whatever side they came down on was great by me, as long as they talked about it."

He added: "The attention was great. And we went into that conversation knowing that 70 percent of Americans support this research."

The night ended with an all-star jam session: Fox strapped on a guitar to join Crow, Costello, Rob Thomas and Leary on stage for the Beatles' "Revolution," "Back in the U.S.S.R." and "Twist and Shout."

And when it was all over, guests went home with a unique gift basket: A Beatles lunch box stuffed with goodies.

Yeah, now I find it even stranger that Beta took offense at the person (and seemingly the board in general) who said that they hoped the band dind't do WTTJ because it would be awkward, when in fact he did do LALD, which could be considered equally awkward.  ???

And I also feel for the guy and his situation. I'm for stem-cell research, so I just thought it would be wrong not for me to come when I was asked."

cool. Casualties of War quotes are for Madagascar.
I love it. I feel moved by the gesture.

Go Axl, go Michael!
Best luck to both of them.

...Lucky

Yay, Axl mentions the new album

That's cool as hell.  LALD is definitely not the song I was thinking it was going to be and now that I think about it, it's not really that odd of a choice.  "What does it matter to ya, When you've got a job to do you've got to do it well, You've got to give the other fella hell..."  It could really be applied to the current situation and the whole Limbaugh\Michael J. Fox thing.  I wonder if that much thought was really put into the song choice though??  Anyway, Axl gets a nice little pat on the back from me for doing this event and hopefully we will continue to see him doing even more benefits and charities.

live and let die is a bit strange for such an event ::)

Yeah, now I find it even stranger that Beta took offense at the person (and seemingly the board in general) who said that they hoped the band dind't do WTTJ because it would be awkward, when in fact he did do LALD, which could be considered equally awkward.  ???

Not really. Prolly You'll know what hurts and what doesn't when you have your dearest person or yourself suffering from a serious illness. When the word in the songs has nothing to do with the illness, to assume it should offend the patients, which is like assuming they're not supposed to survive their illness, and to make fun of it are the former. and totally off.

The night ended with an all-star jam session: Fox strapped on a guitar to join Crow, Costello, Rob Thomas and Leary on stage for the Beatles' "Revolution," "Back in the U.S.S.R." and "Twist and Shout."

what about our axl?
This is the second time I see Axl and Elvis Costello in one article.

It's nice to see Michael J. Fox up there playing the guitar.  It would have been cool if he would have played when Axl was performing.  So Sheryl Crow sang two songs and Axl sang one... I wouldn't have minded a duet with Axl when Sheryl sang Eight Days a Week or Black Bird with Axl and Sheryl would have kicked ass.

Beta's point was that it was inappropriate to make a cheap joke about such a sensitive subject.  She wasn't agreeing that WTTJ would be in poor taste, only that the joke around it was.

Beta's point was that it was inappropriate to make a cheap joke about such a sensitive subject.? She wasn't agreeing that WTTJ would be in poor taste, only that the joke around it was.

I'll probably have to continue this at MYGNR because it will be deleted, and I don't want to carry it on anyway, but my point is that it seemed to me to be more of an observation than a cheap joke.? Here's the exchange, I'll substitute the other song...

I just hope he didn't scream

'LIVE AND LET DIIIIIIE'

because that would be awkward

And why would you think that? Is that because you did? It is amazing the way you guys think. It is amazing how sick your mind is. And, if that suppose to be funny; it was far from been funny.
Beta

I just found her post more negative than the original, but maybe that's because I always thought of her as being such a positive person, and I took offense at her sweeping 'the way you guys think' statement.? ?But I'm sure she didn't mean it, just like I'm sure the original poster meant no offense, either.? :)? Back to our regularly scheduled programming.?  ;D

I really don't see what is so awkward about the song.  It's just that, a song.  Axl picked something that he knew how to sing and that was written by Paul McCartney, a former Beatle.  You folks read WAY too much into things.  It's a song that was written as the title track for a James Bond movie for crissakes.

For his part, Fox was just excited to know he had some effect on politics. "In the last week of the election, when people are chucking garbage around and it's the most brutal part of the campaign, people were actually talking about stem cells," he said. "Whatever side they came down on was great by me, as long as they talked about it."

Once again proves, Mr. Fox is trying his best to raise awareness about stem-cell research, and that's it's not about being a Democrat-pawn.

Go Michael, Go Axl, go all of you!? : ok: :peace:

It comes and goes. They'll control again, it's just the current voter feeling. It goes back and forth, and always will.

That's the great thing about this country. We need both of them. We need balance, in order to find the middle ground that most moral & human people think by.

Never be brainwashed enough to simply vote down party lines, whether your left or right. Vote who the right person for the job is. That's what America is about.

And when it was all over, guests went home with a unique gift basket: A Beatles lunch box stuffed with goodies.

maybe she actually didn't get the joke? it may be tasteless, but it's KIND OF funny. The same joke would apply by going to an Alzheimer's Disease benefit and for the intro to WTTJ, screaming "do you know where the f--- you are!?" Still tasteless... but that's the sense of humor that people who listen to Axl Rose lyrics can have. I always thought the "it's all Greek to me" line was a weak throwaway in One in a Million, until learning that anal sex is described as "greek"... and now that line stitches the verse together.

BTW, I don't think LALD was such a bad choice. Don't you think the song's about surviving, rather than for example letting something die like the title implies? Come on, you've all heard the song.

I'm depressed (I've been diagnosed), and that song doesn't make me want to give up and die, so why should people with other diseases feel like it? It gives strength to people.

Axl should do one of these events every week! Actually he should sing every song in the fuckin' world. If I was his manager I'd try to convince him to do that. A gifted singer like him shouldn't be restrained to such a small list of songs!

Like the song says, 'Live and Let Die'.  :)

Or just you don't get it.

This point doesn't really deserve this much argument, but it's just that I disagree. And I get it, trust me. Unfortunately, I know the pain of watching someone in horrible shape die slowly. I also know the pain of watching other people watch someone die (that should make sense). Seeing how it affects other lives may be the hardest part.

And, in those situations-- no matter how tasteless-- if someone can find a way to make me laugh, then god bless them.

we're just fans here. we're not spokespeople or public figures... we have a small bit of responsibility to behave, shouldn't have to watch what we say in all occasions.

tasteless? yeah. cheap? yeah. funny? that depends on who you are, i guess.

As Legend said, Live and Let Die... and THAT's what it really means.
