Title: I'm going on a no-sleep marathon - 14 days without sleep!
Post by: HamsterDemocracy on October 06, 2006, 02:25:25 AM
A 17-year-old boy holds the world record for staying awake eleven days straight. I'm often awake into the wee hours of the morning anyway so I've decided I'm going to break his record and stay awake for two weeks straight. I'll be drinking much Rock Star, Red Bull, and using HTGTH a lot, too.

They say after a couple days is when you start hallucinating. I think I'm going to start this Sunday and see how far I can get. Should be interesting!

I'm making this to prove I actually did it in case Guiness needs verification - this way I can prove I had plans to do this and with eyewitness testimonies by family members and friends and this documented proof they'll put me in their books.

Wish me luck!

I saw them around the 4th day once..............

Now THAT is fucking hilarious.  The over/under I will set at 85 hours!  At 84 hours, you'll be like, "Yes, I made it to 3 1/2 days!"  Before you realize you did it, you'll be asleep that hour.
 :hihi:

That "shadow people" line made me laugh.

I don't know.  I'd caution against this kind of self-abuse.  In the grand scheme of things, this can't possibly help yor body.  I hope you'll reconsider.

You're gonna need at LEAST an eight ball of meth. Probably more. Dont drink anything but coffee or soda. I know you can do it. I stayed up a week before, but had to go to bed due to the crash of running out of meth.

You're kidding... right?

Or do you really think a message on a messageboard is enough proof to convince enough people to get a world record.. Another thing is that the whole idea is pretty idiotic if you ask me (you propably won't).

I suggest you read at least this, and hopefully do a bit more studying of this before attempting anything like that.

If u have 14 days to waste you must be living the worlds most boring and unproductive life - try entering that into the record books instead

Sir, you have my contempt

Several months ago I didn't sleep for 10 days... not by choice, I was withdrawing from methadone (taken for a sciatic nerve injury, NOT heroin).  By the fourth day I thought I was going to have a psychotic episode, which kind of happened around the sixth day, when my mother took me to CVS pharmacy to pick up a prescription for Ambien.  I started screaming in the store and couldn't stop.
Lack of sleep does devastating things to the body.  There will come a point where your body will shut down, so I agree with James, the kid probably took something other than red bull to stay up.  Plus, I think Guiness requires A LOT of documentation.  I don't think they will accept eyewitness testamony.  If they did, anyone with their friends and family can lie and say they broke a record.  If it's really important to you, CALL GUINESS!  Ask them what proof they need.  They're not going to look at a message board as proof, because how can you prove you were the one sending all of the messages.  But don't start this without knowing for sure what you need for Guiness.
Also, don't even think about driving!  Breaking a world record isn't worth killing someone on the highway.
So, be prepared, be smart... and good luck.

you have no idea what you are getting yourself into, there are so many rules you have to follow when attempting to break an existing world record.
You really need to contact guiness first, you might wanna check their site...

Here's the link to break or make a world record.
http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/records4/Checker/Intro1.asp
It looks like you have to apply first before you attempt to break a record and the approval time for applications is 4 to 6 weeks.

Surely 2 WEEKS without sleep, appropriate medication(?)and other  preperations could do some major damage?Even IF you somehow managed. Which sounds very unlikely. If you are serious about this, it might be better to do some homework regarding the matter for starters?
And ay, I bet Guiness couldn't care less. Family testimonials and message board announcements mean jack shit.
I've been holding my breath for 4 months now. This thread and my mom can prove it.

But ehh, Skipping an occasional night is pretty interesting/fun.
I often end up taking 24-30 hour sleepless bursts before important exams and such.I'm sure I could not/don't want to take it any farther than that:)

Well according to the wife of another man who attempted some kind of no-sleep marathon (or maybe he was just having medical issues and couldn't sleep), her husband was awake for like a week straight and ever since then his entire mood changed - he was always somber and moody and depressed. He also allegedly saw apparitions and "shadow people" etc., which scarred him forever and made him have nightmares. Apparently you can become permanently damaged in the brain from this, but I'm not too worried, because I'm already pretty fucked up and manic-depressive anyway.

Are you related to horsey by anychance? Just wondering.

You know you love me.

There's so much homoeroticism flying around right now that it's giving me Deliverance flashbacks.

Mike Patton did a sleep deprivation experiment during the writing of Faith No More's Angel Dust

"Faith No More keyboardist Roddy Bottum remarked about Patton "caffeine is the only drug he does", in reference to the Faith No More song Caffeine from the album Angel Dust, which Patton wrote while in the middle of a sleep-deprivation experiment. During his sleep deprivation he became an obsessive fan of Robert Tilton (Televangelist) He started sending money to him and getting religious stuff in the mail for months afterwards.

well. i went 24 hours without sleep once, and i can tell you. it fucked me right up...i was like, it was weird, everything seemed delayed and surreal.

I got home lied down and dropped off without even intending too.

Your Body needs sleep, and anyway, you should have consulted a proper health person about doing this record thing safely.

you know what your doing is really bad for your health dont you, i mean people sleep because it gives your brain a chance to rest, without sleep it works over time.. by 9 days your brain is going to start falling apart. and you could suffer alot of ilness by doing this..

but it is fucking awesome... dude when your brains fall out mail a chunk to me and i will sell it on ebay :smoking:

I've decided to really push myself to the limits...starting tomorrow I'm going on the Christian Bale diet...one can of tuna and an apple a day, and only water to drink. This is how he dropped 63 lbs. for The Machinist, and I think it will make my no-sleep marathon even more interesting. I also am going to start running 10 miles every day, I usually run about 6.5 but I don't think that's enough.

At this point everything seems to be going in weird motion, when I turn my head everything is kind of strobe-ish, I'm also breaking out in acne the likes of which I haven't had for about a year.

Almost...I was watching a loooong movie tonight called The Passenger with Jack Nicholson. The last ten minutes I started to put my head down, "just for a second," then I snapped out of it and was like "WHOA! CLOSE ONE!" So then to wake myself up I put ice cubes down my shorts and went for a 2-mile run, then I ate a bowl of popcorn and took a shower, it woke me up.

Well it would be kind of funny but right now I don't have a webcam and I don't have money to buy one, I have to make a car payment at the end of the month so I'm strapped. I could probably get a cheap one but I don't feel too comfortable letting a live stream run in my room, apart from the fact that I'm out of the house about 10 - 12 hours per day when I'm working and have school the other two days, my mom's laptop got fried a few months ago so she uses my computer a lot now for e-mailing and stuff, when I'm not on she's on, she's on a lot during the day, and she's paranoid about Internet safety as it is. She also sometimes will just walk into my room and like 2 am and get on the computer, she stays up late. So I don't think it'd work. If I lived by myself and didn't have a job I'd probably do it. I'm also a bit cautious myself about putting stuff over the Internet, I don't really like giving out personal info because of bad experience on IMDb, someone got ahold of my info and thought it'd be funny to paste it everywhere because they disagreed with my Shawshank Redemption review.

I think once I move out and get my own place I'm going to start video blogs though.

Yeah but problem is I'm only here during night really, that's why I usually post most around these hours, during the day I'm not at home. But I will try to keep this updated as much as possible.

I'm starting to think I may not make it much longer because I really didn't prepare well enough for this, I binged on energy drinks and now I'm on the low end of that high and it's pretty bad.

Theres noway he could run miles while doing this anyway even if he has fallen asleep. My record is probably about 32-33 hours and usually the following nite you can stay awake longer, when your body adjusts but anything over 30 hours and your pushing the limits on what your brain can function on.

Also coffee is a good thing to drink if you need alot of caffiene and want to stay awake. the antioxidents in coffee prevent you from getting hyper tension like you will get from too many sodas. So it nuetralizes bad side affects of caffiene.

dude that is pretty amazing still. consider you had no real training or preparation for this. i think it was totally awesome.. i dont think i've gone much more than 30 hours or so...

you'll do better the next run..
i wonder if getting a lot of sleep before doing sleep deprivation makes it easier?  the diet thing probably helps too (you mentioned it in the thread)
