Title: Energy at RIR3 was fantastic
Post by: themovieaddict.com on September 04, 2006, 03:04:16 PM
Axl's vocals may have been shit and he may have been a bit overweight but the energy was fantastic. I far prefer it to RIR5 - not just because 5 had shitty soundboarding, but I just thought there was more excitement in RIR. I think it's underrated quite a bit because people pick on Axl's vocals and Robin Finck's goth look and don't realize how energetic it was - Axl's age has caught up with him during the '06 tour and he doesn't keep up the stage antics like he used to (hence the new dance moves he said he enjoys doing on stage), but at RIR3 Axl had the long hair, the bandana, and the energy from the early '90s.

Anybody else really like this show just in terms of energy and not necessarily vocals/etc?

it was a fantastic show, i did love it, a cool set list, if axl had sounded better vocally it would have been a great show, but the band was still learning on stage etc, you knoiw how to be a band etc

You do know that Brazilian fans have much more 'enthousiasm' / 'celebrating' / 'expressing" wise (or something, dunno quite how to say it) which was the setting of RIR2001 ? A whole different crowd all together in regards to 2006. Rock in Rio should've been held in Brazil.  ;)

You do know that he has had an injury, and explained in an interview how it's been bothering him?

But I prefer RIR 5 because the band looks cooler, and Axl's voice is better. (Although not what it was in the later shows; also the band sounded better, despite the poor quality of sound)

(btw..I think it was muscle spasms)

As far as Axls on stage antics, at RIR 2001 he was still running around on stage, obviously he isnt anymore but, I think he could if he choose too.  In 2001-2002 he was going through the motions from the UYI era, thats part of the reason why the shows werent that well received because it looked like he was trying to re-create rather then start new.  In 2006, new look, new moves, everyones happy.

this show was like punch in my face - in a positive way. when I saw Buckethead playing Nightrain and Robin playing Sweet Child, and Axl ranting, I was like - oh my god, they're back! and I've been excited since that moment 8)

That's a good point, he had the bandana and the rants and the hair etc... but it just seemed dated, at least now he's taken a different approach to his on stage gimmicks/looks (and luckily voice)

I first got turned on to GNR through the 2002 VMA performance.

After that, I went online and bought a DVD of Rock in Rio III.

My first reaction to Axl after watching RIR III was - "what the hell happened to this guy in a year and a half?".

He looked completely different at Rio compared to the 2002 shows, and it boggled my mind how he could fuck his image up that badly in such a short span of time.

I thought Axl sounded pretty good at RIR3... A little whiny and high, but still good.... The energy and the setlist was awesome too... One of my favorite shows along with Marquee 87 N2 & N3, Madison 87, Las Vegas 2001 & Donnington 2006...

yeah i have Welcome to The Jungle from Rio 3, its fantastic. probably one of my favorite performance of it. The Brazilian fans were FREAKING OUT!! my god they were so into it, it was great.  I think he sounded fine, much better than the '02 shows and the VMA. But still 2006 Axl owns all....

axl was running around a lot at rock am ring.....  and his voice isn`t flattering while he does, contrary to rock in rio 2001....listen to his scream in madagascar for example...

and i don?t think the shows weren`t that well received, because of him moving like he did 10 years ago, which he actually didn`t really do. his stage presence is more similar to the UYI days now than it was during the 2002 tour by the way...  i`m rather talking about his look and the way he`s using his mic for example  than his actual moves....  and people like that...

on topic: i watched the dvd some days ago and i really enjoyed the great crowd. i don?t think axl?s fitness was the most important aspect of the concert`s energy, it was the crowd (which surely made axl more energetic as well...)

edit:  i guess we`ll get to see some nice shows next year in south america!

I agree. I liked RIR 3, but there is no comparison to the 2006 GNR. Rock Am Ring knocks it out.
