Title: Hard Rock or Metal
Post by: dangnr on July 18, 2006, 09:58:01 AM
Theres a big article on MTV.com talking about the greatest metal bands of all time, they made their own top 10, with no sign of GUNS N ROSES, which brings up a good question  is GNR a metal band or a hard Rock band?
Id like to just hear some input

Well, i would say Guns N`Roses is a Hard Rock band, with some Metal Elements... Back in the days.. when we dident have
all the Black Metal bands we have today, we could talk about GnR as a "Metal band" I would say Hard Rock band, with Metal elements...

btw. Oh my God is a more Metal sounding song then a Hard Rock song.. too me anyway..

To answer the VH1 question, the song was WTTJ that was number 2, behind only Sabbath's Iron Man.

Secondly, GN'R is a blues based hard rock band with shades of metal.  Not a lot, but just a little bit, for example YCBM and ISE.

Well i would have said hard rock aswell. But i tunes where i have all my music including all my guns stuff, seems to be slightly confused or they have a shite way to classify the music.

the genres that GNR are classed under

AFD - Rock
Lies -  Metal
UYI 1 - Rock
UYI 2 - Metal
TSI ? - Hard rock
The live album - Metal
The "civil war" EP - Heavy Metal
GH - Rock

so looks like even i tunes doesnt know how to classify GNR.

Guns N' Roses was never a heavy metal band.  They have too much blues and groove in their songs to be considered metal.  As Scott Ian said of Judas Priest, they were the first pure metal band because they removed the blues element that Sabbath had in their music.

Metal may rock, but it doesn't roll.  GN'R had too much roll, too much groove to be metal.

Having said all that, the new band feels a little more metal to me, particularly in their interpretation of some of the old songs.

Huh  ??? :nervous:

GNR has never been anywhere near metal. GNR is rock/hard rock with a punky edge (AFD and TSI?).

Hard Rock - no way in hell are GN'R metal.  I wouldn't really say there are elements even, except maybe when Slash used the BC Rich in YCBM, and even then it's only his tone and not the music.  Too much blues to be metal.  VH1 clearly have no idea what metal is.  And they call SCOM metal?!  Idiots.  :-[

Well,

GnR made a genere by them selves... Its not plain Hard Rock, and its not plain Metal, its not plain Blues..

its a meltingpot, with all the generes in it.. they even have som Folk Rock element in it..

Lets just call it The Guns N Roses style..

Blues based hard Rock, but to deny the metal elements is foolish.  WTTJ and Coma, to give just two examples are metal songs.  It may not sound like Immortal, but then neither do Iron Maiden and they're metal.

AFD- Hard Rock N Roll
Lies- little mor blues in the live like suicide songs, and then some nice songs
UYI 1, 2- Hard Rock
TSI?- PUNK!

thats what i think 8)

Axl ran an ad looking for a "Heavymetal Punk Glam guitarist, Blues influenced."  Slash answered.

That was the story they gave on an Mtv interview in 1988.

Anyway, I think that is the perfect description of what they were when the original band played clubs and recorded Live! Like a Suicide and Appetite for Destuction.  As they went on they added some Folk(Gnr lies)and became less glam.  Use Your Illusion was the product of this transition, It had the anger of Metal with the Bluesy sound and mellow Folk.  They also showed a lot of growth with Epic Rock.  This album was a nice melting pot of styles.

The most important thing about GnR music is that every song sounds completely different from the last, no one song sounds like another.  This still holds true today with the new songs.  Plus they have added more styles to the mix like industrial and teckno, while doing Jazz improv between songs in concert.  That is what makes this band so great,  They dont put any limits or boundries on themselves.  Instead they embody all music and fit it in under what is called Rock n Roll. :peace:

I think Hard Rock.  But there's people around here that say they only listen to metal yet they wear all kinds of GNR shirts.  I'm not sure if they actually listen to them or if they're being posers....

Gn'R is definitly Hard Rock, 'cause there are a lot of differences bettwen them and a metal band, like Iron Maiden for example...
