Title: Is the new drummer any good?
Post by: Andy-k on June 21, 2006, 04:29:51 PM
Excuse me for making a new topic, but I have a question about the new drummer.
Is he any good?
How difficult is it to play drums?  Can it be that the next shows will not be that good or will we barely notice any change? I'm a bit worried that the shows will not be that good, like shorter setlist and maybe the same songs on each show?

Yeah, I'm sure after having such a successful tour so far, GN'R would hire a shoddy drummer for a couple of shows to slow down the pace.

That makes sense.

If you're speaking about Brain Mantia, he's one of the best things that could have possibly happened to Axl Rose. Yes, he's a fantastic drummer.  ;D

Thanks bro. I *just* figured that out... Wow. How'd I miss this?

I was thinking of Frank Ferrer   : ok:

Well can we expect that we get almost just as good show that we would do with Brain?

I'm sure the replacement drummer sucks. A band like GnR wouldn't possibly have access to any kind of talented musicians.  :P

(I wonder what's going to happen around here if he turns out to be a better drummer for GnR than Brian).

I'm sure Axl only has the best on hand here.  He wouldn't risk having a crap drummer.  That would be stupid.  Axl knows how important it is for this Euro tour to be great.  He'll handle it   : ok:

They guy probably knows the songs better then Brain. What can he possibly be doing while they're on tour but practice. It's not Like Brains wife just found out shes having a baby. I think they knew this was gonna happen while they were in europe. Too bad Robins not being replaced. That guys blows.

I am sure the drummer is good. But I am sure someone will bitch about it anyway. Oh Brain if you are reading this.....James is an awesome name for a kid...male or female.

The guy has been an understudy. The band must have seen this coming and had him ready to go. Surely he is good.

He was the drummer in love spit love with Fortus.

PLaying the drums is easy peasy. Especially on music written by 10 year olds like the old GNR stuff was. Seriously, although it was great music and we all love it, its hardly complicated.

The Coheed and Cambria drum tech replaced their drummer at the last minute for their Download set at Donnington and they sounded exactly the same.

God I hope so.  I think I read in the press release its for 10 shows right?  Not to be a selfish cow, but I hope he's back for Birmingham.  I think he's a fantastic drummer but being there for your baby being born is more important.  Nice to know he has his priorities right.

i'm actually excited to see this guy, as i will see him for one show and brain for the next. :smoking:
do you guys think frank has practiced with the band or learned the songs on his own? isn't practicing with the band necessary?

He's probably been at Soundchecks and learn't the basics, the band and he have probably prepared for this happening.

I sense a bit of sarcasm there mike!

Seriously though, having seen Frank perform live when he was in Pisser, I can tell you all he is a kick ass rock drummer, all energy throughout the entire show.

maybe he doesn't know for sure when his wife is having the baby so he can't just fly back. and it would be really tired from the road. but let's hope for the best : ok:

He should know people here talk shit all the time about basically anyone ever related to Guns N' Roses, from Axl to Chris Pitman to Steven Adler.

True.  But as much as I'd like to think otherwise, I don't want to make it any easier for the tour to somehow implode.  Changing the lineup and chemistry of the band onstage, even briefly, might throw a wrench in the works.  God, I hope not.  I want GnR '06 to be around for a long, long time.

And the only song I don't like Brain on is You Could Be Mine, because of the intro. Other than that. I perfer the guy to Matt Sorum.

dont forget that gnr is also a big business, and they are not going to put some amateur drummer to play

How's his playing so far? I didn't find any comment on the board from who has already seen him playing with GN'R.

I would love to see Brain on the Helsinki gigs, but hope Ferrer's just fine.

As a matter of fact I'd love Brain to be more creative with the material, his playing sounds pretty basic to me and he clearly has the talent to spice things litlle bit more.

i saw him at graspop, his first show...and i have to say you hardly hear a difference. He has a lot of energy on stage and the only mistake he made was in knockin' on heavens door where he started the outro to soon after the crowd sings along...but axl immidiately said...wait wait we got one more...and in no time he made the mistake good, so the chemistry between him and the guys is already good from his first show. Don't worry, he's a good drummer. You could be mine was amazing with him !

He also seemed very very happy, amazed and a little bit shocked during the band greeting at the end of the show? :hihi: ... he looked like WOW look at all those people...didn't i supposed to be in the crowd ? how did i passed the security people ?? ???? :hihi:? :peace: don't worry he's good

Bravefish-- this thread is about the temporary replacement for Brain while he's back in the U.S. get with the program!  :hihi:

frank looks cool..

richard's site shows a bunch of pics of frank and the band hanging out and he looks like hes having the best time ever. richards caption was something like "frank, the happiest drummer in the world right now."

if my memory suits me right, didn't axl give frank a drum solo a few nights ago? thats pretty cool   :)

who know if hes good? who cares he is only playing the songs of steven and matt. MANY MANY drummer can play these songs. its not like RUSH or any other band with difficult drum parts.  Its not so hard to play those songs.  i dont know but i bet he can play them just fine! close u eyes and you will hear the same drumming parts!

this new band is awesome having seen them twice in NY. However.........they need to get a different drummer. I need to hear the new replacement to see if he brings anything, but. Brain is absolutely horrible. No stage presence (it doesn't help he's on the second level). but he doesn't have the swing adler had or the power sorum had. He's not a rock drummer. I"m thinking a Phil Rudd, Shannon Larkin or Sorum is what Axl needs.
