Title: Sunburn
Post by: Evolution on June 14, 2006, 09:50:10 AM
Any tips on speeding up the healing? How long does it usually take to disappear? I'm going mad over here  :(

lots of after-sun lotion, cold showers, don't scratch.

How badly are you burnt?

Neck is peeling as is my face. Hands and arms up to the area your t-shirt ends is a darkish pink

Take your shirt off, so it won't rub your shoulders and neck (I know it sounds sexy, but it is all MEDICAL advice ) Just keep it cool, no more sun, aftersun lotion will help against the pain and the itching. Good luck!

Hehe thanks.

Any idea how long it takes to get back to decent coloured skin?

Depends on the generating quality of your skin and how badly you are burnt. First day is horrible (gonna be difficult to sleep tonight), but it should pick up after three days. Mind you, I'm a teacher, not a doctor. I know this cause I only have to LOOK at the sun to get burnt!  :nervous:

Aloe Vera is the single greatest sunburn remedy on the planet.  I've had BAD burns, used Aloe, and not even peeled....

It's the greatest stuff on earth...it can also help in healing small cuts and such, and regular burns as well.

^That is so true. That's also why aftersun works, it has aloe vera in it  : ok: Good stuff, cools the burns.

Someone already mentioned aloe vera, which is usually the best for sunburns. Cetaphil cream is also good for helping with dry, peeling skin.

It'll probably take a week to completely heal. It depends on how severe it is.

Wear your SPF 50 sunblock next time Evo!!

Sound advice right there. As Stoned will testify I stupidly neglected any kind of skin care on the  Friday of the Download Festival.

Here in Oz theres a spray called Solarcain thats great for burns of any kind but its designed for sunburn...takes the pain away and makes it feel cool as hell....

I hate sunburn - prob cos I have skin that burns in 5 mins on a sunny day, and i'm alergic to sunblock :(

You're probably allergic to the PABA in sunblock, a lot of people are. There's lots of sunscreens which are PABA free and frangrance free. If you have sensitive skin, look for sunscreens that have "physical blockers" such as micronized zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.

I?ve been burned many a time over the years. I?m sure I?ll die of skin cancer.

Treatment really depends on the type of skin you have and how bad the burn is. This is what works for me:

1. Take advil regularly.
2. Throughout the day, spray Solarcaine thoroughly on the burn, and let it dry on its own.
3. Put a good amount of baking soda in a bowl with warm water and a towel. Then hold the towel on the burn. The towel should be lukewarm when applying; as it cools put it back in the water and start over. Do this for several minutes.

#3 is key and it works for me big time. I?ve tried all the folk tales and this is the only one that has ever worked. the baking soda helps your skin retain water, and the slight warmth of the towel sucks the heat out of your skin.

Do NOT take a cold shower. It irritates the skin and will make it hurt more.

So did i but i'm fine, got a decent tan actually, get in!? Was a bit painful at the time but it's sorted itself out, you're first post seems to imply you've never had to deal with this before, you seriously never been sunburnt? (Until now...)
