Could get a lot of publicity if he turned up to this, kerrang awards etc

The nominations for the fourth annual Metal Hammer Golden Gods awards ? which this year takes place on Monday, June 12 at Koko in Camden, North London ? were announced today. In keeping with the "Valhalla" theme of this year's awards, Metal Hammer magazine have teamed up with the crew of the "Hammer of the Gods", an authentic full-size replica Viking longboat, to launch both the awards on June 12 and the team's cross channel row, which takes place on the weekend of June 3 to raise money for charity Task Brazil.

Leading the field for nominations are longstanding rock and metal purveyors Roadrunner Records, with a staggering total of 14 nominations for the label that is home to acts as diverse as SLIPKNOT, MACHINE HEAD and award-nominated DRAGONFORCE. Coming in a very close second for overall nominations is major label powerhouse Warner Music with an impressive 11 awards for their roster of breakthrough U.S. rock bands MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE and AVENGED SEVENFOLD (a favourite of Radio 1's Jo Whiley), as well as Valley boys FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND and Finnish rockers H.I.M. In a complete whitewash of the category, Warner Music have secured four of the five nominations in the "Best Video" category, with the fifth and final nomination going to Roadrunner.

Going head-to-head with a joint total of four nominations are Sony and Universal, while EMI have secured two nominations for metal stalwarts and British institution IRON MAIDEN. Coming on strong is independent challenger to the rock throne Visible Noise marginally trails Sony and Universal with three nominations including "Best UK Band" and "Album of the Year", both for BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Metal Hammer magazine continues to pave the way and defend the faith for the alternative rock music scene. Daring to cover music genres and artists others fear to, Metal Hammer magazine has risen to become an institution in rock music over the years. The dedication of the magazine to its readers and its integrity sets it apart from the rest of the market, something that was reflected in the recent ABC announcement, which saw Metal Hammer magazine increase its year-on-year circulation a staggering 15%, which equates to a 50% circulation rise in the last two years alone.

Chris Ingham, publisher of Metal Hammer and Classic Rock magazines said: "The Metal Hammer Golden Gods have always represented the year of music that the magazine has supported. We know what our readers listen to and we keep in close contact with their changes in taste and styles. The Golden Gods celebrates the bands and artists that are influencing lives, not bands and artists that have the most money to spend, the best clothes or the most adverts. The fourth annual Metal Hammer Awards promises to be a spectacular occasion and a real chance for the marginalised to finally have a say." A spokesman from the Hammer of the Gods crew said: "Task Brazil Trust do fantastic work with the abandoned street kids in Rio de Janeiro and although rowing a 2.5 tonne wooden Viking boat across the busiest shipping lanes presents a bit of a challenge it's nothing compared with the challenges faced by the kids living on the streets of Brazil."

For all the details of how to vote and where to get tickets see issue 152 of Metal Hammer magazine (available Wednesday, April 12) or visit the Metal Hammer web site: www.metalhammer.co.uk.

Lookin' at Axl's competition in that list I'd say he's a sure win.

Zakk Wylde, an icon?  Puh-lease!  Riff lord, but no icon for damn sure.

What says Iron Maiden more than Eddie?  That's Axl's chief competition.

The winner of the Icon usually closes the show with a performance :)

If Axl wins it, not this time.

Yeah but axl has done shit in over a decade, zakk has made good music he fucking kicks ass on the guitar and sings.. Songs I have heard off mafia are really good and in this river is a excellent tune.. Something you would think most axl lover would really enjoy..

Axl needs one of those who needs to come back and rock awards..

Don't get me wrong, I like Zakk.  Counterfeit God, Ain't Life Grand - awesome tunes, plus his work with Ozzy.  But to call him an icon is a major exaggeration.  I would've put him in the Riff Lord list to compete with Slash.

He could reproduce his execution of Bruce Dickinson.

Plus, the way Maiden are storming through the recording of their new album, it would not be beyond the relams of possibility that they could turn up.

No icon? One of the greatest living guitarists today. Countless magazine covers, music awards, own line of guitars, and other equipment. 19 years old stepped onto stage wit Ozzy and played the fuck out of his axe. Not to mention helped write some of Ozzy's classics and started BLS a band with more than a following.. So to say he aint an Icon makes you a moron.

It's so funny watching Eddie come out during concerts and have the guys attack him.  The WWE has NOTING on them :hihi:  But seriously, I think they would have to tell Axl he won, or else he wouldn't show up just to sit through an awards show.

Koko Camden.....
are the awards of a high profile or something?
Anyhow nice.

Lookin' at Axl's competition in that list I'd say he's a sure win.

In contrast, slash has an extra tough opponent. I'd say odds are against him. :P

Being Ozzy's guitarist doesn't make you an icon, unless you're Randy Rhodes.? How many records has Zakk sold with BLS?? Going on your logic, I guess Dave Mustaine is a fucking God of Gods seeing how he had virtually the same type of history and transitions, but was more successful at it.? He played for the "mighty" Metallica then started rival band Megadeth and sold over 20 million records.? Wonder why his name isn't on there.

moron

Jerk-off.

just found this in yesterdays DAILY STAR (a british newspaper, not very reliable but ill post it anyway)

HEAVY METAL
FUEDING ROCKERS BRING WAR TO UK GONG CEREMONY
bitter enemies axl rose and metallica frontman james hetfield are set to cause may hem at this years metal hammer golden gods award. The feuding pair will come face to face and terrified organisers have drafted in extra security to keep the waring factions apart. Bosses have pulled off a major coup persuading the singers of the two biggest heavy metal bands on the planet to attend the event but are terrified the animosity could spill over into fisticuffs. Rose and Hetfield have been enimies since a co headline tour in 1992 ended in a bloody bar room brawl. Now organisers have to figure out a way of keeping the twosome apart for the duration of the event. Whats more, axe God Slash is attending too and it will be the first time he and Axl have been in the same building since he left Guns N Roses in 1996. My man with the eyeliner tells me 'the three top names in metal have all agreed to take part but its turning into a logistical nightmare'. James and Axl will have to be kept away from each other and no one knows what Slashs attitude will be. The golden gods are always a boozy affair so there are serious worries that it could all kick off. The debauched event takes place at Londons Koko on June 12th. I have dusted down my Doc Martins in anticipation of the evening.

And old-GN'R to close the show!!

Seriously though, the timing of this awards show is perfect for Axl to get some publicity for CD. I think he's goota be favourite to win this award.

To everyone dissing Zakk Wylde and saying he's not a riff lord: YES HE IS!! You listen to any of the fucking guitarists around nowadays and all of them just play the same old "play as fast as you can with no passion" shit which is just boring!! Zakk puts shitloads of effort into his music and deserves that award!!

And I vote for Axl to win the Icon award!! : ok:

I don't know who you're targeting with that but I'll refute it anyway:

Just for the record - I said Zakk IS a Riff Lord and should be in the race competing with Slash for that award.

However, I disagree with him being in the icon race with Axl.  And I've already stated why so I won't go there again.

Damn, they really want to hype this event.  :hihi:

They've exaggerated and exhaustipated just about all the facts on this.

I highly doubt they're running a huge risk of Axl and James punching each other's lights out or that them being in the same building together is a powder keg ready to explode.  Hell, they might even shake hands and shoot the shit for a while.

The media will do anything for publicity.
