Title: Pianos n keyboards in rock songs
Post by: Sakib on December 10, 2005, 05:08:30 PM
me and my pal Parrykins aka "izzyrose" discussed whether keyboards and pianos ruin rock songs to stop them from becoming rock to more pop and whether rock songs shud be guitar based to be pure rockers.

What do u guys think?

gn'r wen 1st started out were pure rock but when keyboards came in, they became slightly softer in some sense However, Meatloaf managed to make bat out ta hell sound like a rocker even with out a piano

I think a piano is a sure fire way to make a good rock song a fantastic rock song

Really helps give the track some class and gives it that great blues vibe

Tracks like Bowie's Suffragette City and of course GN'R's 14 years really show what a piano can do when used correctly

As for keyboards - when they are subtle they work great, but oversuded makes the band sound 1980's synth pop......

I really Agree pionos really make a rock song . They make it softer sure but it still kicks major ass unless you get into techno lol

Piano just adds to a song, gives it something extra and at times is the basis of a good song.

Try some of the piano on "With Teeth". Sounds awesome

Piano brings rock to a more elaborated feeling, perhaps cause it expreses so much. But sometimes too much piano makes the song so cheesy for instance home sweet home by Motley Crue. Good example of how to use a piano in a Song would be Queen  : ok:

Yeah exactly in songs like 14 years pure rock n roll and Locomotive some freaking alternative stuff in the end makes a well used of the piano. In queen I gotta say get down make love and don't try suicide makes a great example.  : ok:

ok. i think its crap being in a 2 man band. i feel a band has gotta have at least 4 members. 5 man bands are the perfect size.

I think as long as the chemistry and talent is there, 2 person bands arent a step down from a 5 person band at all. If anything the writing aspects would be much more intimate and enjoyable than butting skulls with 3 other people who might not like/appreciate your contribution to a song.

ClintroN, I dont think u realise a solo artist isnt a one man band. He/she/it has other members to play instruments. U try and play two guitars at the same time (one 4 lead and one for rhythm), bass, drums, vocals, and/or keyboards.  :hihi:

I'm totally down with piano in rock.  And keyboards in metal are pretty badass too?  Anybody ever hear Children Of Bodom?  The keyboard adds so much to that band.

No problem with pianos, but keyboards sometimes get OTT.  I think Dizzy could make some interesting touches to CD if it ever gets done, I like what he does on track 7 on Village Gorilla Head (Stinson's solo album).
