Post by: liquidvirus on July 29, 2005, 02:41:09 PM no official single for DLT was released to my knowledge
Title: Re: What is going on with VR's singles?! Post by: badobsession81 on July 29, 2005, 03:02:33 PM madness. why the video then?! argh.
thx for that tho :-) Title: Re: What is going on with VR's singles?! Post by: W. Botaxl Rose on July 29, 2005, 04:33:53 PM Not to harp on the subject, but I have no fucking idea what VR was thinking with their single selections/order. They supposedly were this down n' dirty hard rock band, then we get FTP's ::) & a video for DLT that was meant for STB. I hope they get their shit together for the 2nd album cause the honeymoon is over & they somewhat wasted a full touring schedule supporting poorly chosen singles.
However, Contraband is still a great album. Title: Re: What is going on with VR's singles?! Post by: badobsession81 on July 29, 2005, 06:33:57 PM i do agree on some points
it was good until DLT. fall to pieces is def a single tho!! idve re-released set me free as a proper single like most first bands do eventually, slither was a great choice (much more of an intelligent song than set me free as well) third single would have to be fall to pieces, (i think the 2 rockers, then ballad for third 'rule' works time and time again). if set me free wasnt rereleased and we had slither as first single, idve gone with sucker train (with the train video!!)for second (or summat like that). then if we're really milking the album, something a bit different (mid tempo rocker) like superhuman wouldve been a good choice, followed by the final ballad, epic type song you got no right, saving lovin the alien as an album track to 'discover' bob Title: Re: What is going on with VR's singles?! Post by: W. Botaxl Rose on July 29, 2005, 06:45:12 PM I would've had them do something like this:
1) STB 2)Slither 3)YGNR 4)Illegal I 5)a live version of DLT. Krystal Steal could've starred in the DLT video shot at the Roxy. That would've been a nice, sleazy way to end Contraband! I don't count SMF since it was already released & FTP blows. Title: Re: What is going on with VR's singles?! Post by: badobsession81 on July 29, 2005, 07:23:59 PM yeh, idve been happy with that. love superhuman tho so wouldve replaced illegal i
act my fav rocker is spectacle - love the drumming, and rhythm on the solo section! quality. but i know many view this as the worst. ill never understand y i always pick completely diff songs to ev1 else lol Title: Re: What is going on with VR's singles?! Post by: W. Botaxl Rose on July 29, 2005, 10:26:26 PM I knew u would say something about illegal I! I think it was even voted out 1st in the Contraband survivor on here & it proves your point about people liking different songs. I always luv when the cd gets to song 4 & 5 & then i skip 6-8, but it seems lots on here luv 6-8, so go figure?
Title: Re: What is going on with VR's singles?! Post by: D on July 29, 2005, 10:31:33 PM like FTP or not it was a number 1 song so.....
1.Slither It won a fuckin grammy give it some respect 2.You Got No Right 3.Fall To Pieces 4. Sucker Train Blues 5.Loving the Alien Why they dont play LTA is beyond me, why they have this thing about being a "ROCK" band when they have great ballads sucks also. Just put out the most single worthy songs on the radio and do the heavy stuff to prove u are a ROCK band at gigs. they have wasted two great songs in LTA and YGNR. I hate that. Title: Re: What is going on with VR's singles?! Post by: Eazy E on July 29, 2005, 10:36:52 PM Well what's the deal with YGNR being released?
I thought they were recording a new version of it to release as a single? Or is that getting lost like the Tears in Heaven cover? Title: Re: What is going on with VR's singles?! Post by: W. Botaxl Rose on July 29, 2005, 10:51:26 PM Goddamn D, thats painful watching that lady get plowed into.
Yeah, I've always wondered why they've ignored LTA so far live. My first listen through Contraband, I thought that was going to be their sig. ballad. I wonder what the deal is with the band & that song. I guess I'll just have to admit being in the minority on FTP. I think it's about as gay as gay gets & I know it charted high, but I think it's one of those that does more damage than good to most potential VR fans. Kinda like November Rain for GNR, I just don't get it.It's cool to slow things down once in awhile, but FTP crosses the line IMO. Title: Re: What is going on with VR's singles?! Post by: deliverthecow on July 30, 2005, 01:29:31 AM DLT was a very bad choice. I personally love the song but it just wasn't single material. I think the band has even stated that they didn't wanna release it the suits did. I also think Contraband has run it's course, although YGNR would probably renew some interest, i think it is time to move on and concentrate on album #2, I would bet this is what the band wants to do as well.
It is said the new disk will be dropped around Christmas, I hope but i would say we wont get a new album until next spring. Title: Re: What is going on with VR's singles?! Post by: badobsession81 on July 30, 2005, 05:59:37 AM yeh, let the band move on, but i reckon a you got no right release (as it is on the album!!) should be release this autumn to mark the end of the VR tour and contnue interest in radio and press until the next album
Title: Re: What is going on with VR's singles?! Post by: Booker Floyd on July 30, 2005, 06:35:47 AM DLT was a very bad choice. I personally love the song but it just wasn't single material. Agreed. The song fucking rocks, but "Sucker Train Blues" was the clear single to me, and it was a mistake to choose "Dirty Little Thing" over it. As for the first two singles, I dont think theres much room for dispute. Whether their your personal favorites or not, "Slither" and "Fall To Pieces" did exactly what they were supposed to and carried the album nicely. Im not sure what the plan is for a possible "You Got No Right" single. Id personally love to see it - original or re-recorded. "Come On, Come In"s (a song I like a lot, by the way) current airplay might push that out of the picture, but if the follow-up to Contraband is pushed into Spring 2006 as I expect, a "YGNR" single may become more likely. Possiblie because loving the alien sounds like a pop song. I wish that song wasnt on that album, i shall never understand why is was put on there with those great tracks. Title: Re: What is going on with VR's singles?! Post by: Mikkamakka on July 30, 2005, 05:47:58 PM DLT was a very bad choice. I personally love the song but it just wasn't single material. Agreed.? The song fucking rocks, but "Sucker Train Blues" was the clear single to me, and it was a mistake to choose "Dirty Little Thing" over it. I agree that DLT was a bad choice as a single, although the song is excellent. But maybe the company's stupidity made the band's position better (against the company's wishes) and it can good be for the future. Title: Re: What is going on with VR's singles?! Post by: tomass74 on July 31, 2005, 08:16:16 PM I think they did alright.. Slither was a big hit and even though I dont like FTP is was pretty big. I think it also kind of backlashed a bit... It was just on all the time and it sounds pretty cheesy.? I love the fact that DLT was a single whether it was big or not (Although I still hear it everyday on the radio). Lastly, "Loving The Alien" is fucking awesome...... FTP is a pop song, Alien isn't...
Title: Re: What is going on with VR's singles?! Post by: deliverthecow on July 31, 2005, 10:26:52 PM I see that the album has been pushed back, that is no big surprise. So we may get another single after all.
I think YGNR would do pretty well as a crossover single. I like it alot better than FTP, although it did very well, i just never got into the song. Always thought it was highly overrated, but it did what it was intended to do and did well. The rockers left , i wanted STB's for a single but i think they had problems editing it for a single, i think that is why it didn't get released. I also think Big Machine would do well as a single. It has actually gotten some airplay in a few different markets already. As for LTA, that is a great song, definitely not a "pop" song. I like where they went on this song. Sounds like something off of STP's Shangri La album. I really dont know how LTA would do as single material. I just hope there follow up album has a few more songs in the vein of LTA. I like the rocking stuff as much as the next person but i also like the "artsy" stuff. Title: Re: What is going on with VR's singles?! Post by: Eazy E on July 31, 2005, 11:56:20 PM I see that the album has been pushed back, that is no big surprise. Or so Splat says..... Although it's not unlikely, don't believe that until it's from someone official. Title: Re: What is going on with VR's singles?! Post by: dustNroses on August 02, 2005, 08:34:16 AM Is come on come in a single or just a video? Its a pretty unconventional way to do things, to release a video but no single, these days anyway. same with set me free.
Title: Re: What is going on with VR's singles?! Post by: Ignatius on August 02, 2005, 05:59:00 PM It's kinda weird. The album was released almost 14 months ago and they've only released 2 singles. Look at Green Day (album out Sept 04) or even U2 (November 04) they have released 4 singles (and videos) in a shorter time span than VR. Label could've pushed the album sales a bit more by releasing one of the other great ballads with a nice vid as single instead of fucking up with DLT. After FTP, VR could've gone with STB, then finish up with a great vid of YGNR. I get the feeling VR could've done more with the material they had. Title: Re: What is going on with VR's singles?! Post by: tomass74 on August 03, 2005, 07:54:28 PM I think they did fine with DLT. Hell, they still play it alot on the radio where I live.. I know that is not the case everywhere though. I think it was a mistake releasing FTP so early actually. I know it was a big success but it also gave alot of people the impression that they were a 80's butt rock ballad band. If I didn't know who VR were yet and I kept hearing that tune shoved down my throat every two seconds I would hated them.
Title: Re: What is going on with VR's singles?! Post by: KOK on August 07, 2005, 06:53:02 AM I think that VR would have easily sold at list a milion more copies of Contraband if they would make videos for YGNR and LTA. They have also missed a chance for another grammy and a lot more airplay on MTV.
Title: Re: What is going on with VR's singles?! Post by: James_Ramone on August 07, 2005, 12:13:23 PM Best option would of been:
Slither You Got No Right Come On, Come In (Movie song) Fall To Pieces Suckertrain Blues ( With a paradise city esque video ) 4 Album Singles is enough, plus you've got the movie song as well. Title: Re: What is going on with VR's singles?! Post by: ryan_of_lax on August 09, 2005, 05:18:38 PM I think there's no point releasing another single from the album now.
They already have a nonalbum video out now (Come On Come In)... so putting out an old song after that would be kind of confusing... Like... making people believe there is new stuff coming, then put out an old song? Seems strange Title: Re: What is going on with VR's singles?! Post by: marknroses on August 11, 2005, 01:09:51 AM It would have been nice to see STB instead of DLT and now Im a big fan of YGNR. I know that in my review I gave it something of a bad review, but after hearing the song live on May 20th @ PNC, I was walking back to my seat from trying to get a beer, and something in Slash's solo towards the middle-end of the song, made me think a bit of "Estranged" and I kinda danced my way back to the seat the way Axl would have done so on the video for Estranged. I just hope they learn for the next record how to handle the whole singles thing, because they definitly got thrown off with putting out DLT instead of STB.
Its amazing to me how I can play Contraband now and I hear very strong songs now to work out to. And its not like every song is work-out material for me, particularly if I get sick and tired of hear the same shit over again, but I can put Contraband right up there with AFD & UYI, because I can alternate between the three and get the same intensity of listening and activity from each record when listened. GNR music is alive and well, even in another outfit WELL DONE VR :peace: MNR Title: Re: What is going on with VR's singles?! Post by: marknroses on August 11, 2005, 01:13:21 AM Best option would of been: Suckertrain Blues ( With a paradise city esque video ) I like the idea of having concert footage for STB, nice thought Mr. Woody. However, I would substitute Paradise City with a "You Could Be Mine" sort of video, with a more intimate setting in a club. I don;t know why I think that, its just the feel for the music that has me thinking that that may be more appropriate for the song. But to each his own. MNR |
