Title: What If? Axl joined Queen
Post by: alternativemonkey on June 14, 2005, 12:42:10 PM

Like many fans on this board, I believe Axl Rose is one of, if not the greatest, frontman of all time. That said, it is difficult to find him doing nothing. More than wanting Chinese Democracy, I want to see him on stage again.

What if ? . . .

What if Queen had offered Freddie Mercury's spot to Axl Rose instead of Paul Rogers for this summer's tour (www.queenonline.com)? If Axl was fronting Queen this summer, it would be the biggest tour of the year if not the decade. Bigger than the Rolling Stones.

1. Agree or Disagree: Axl fronting Queen for a summer tour would be awesome!

2. Given Axl's relationship with Brian May and Axl's participation in the Freddie Mercury concert, is it possible that Queen did approach Axl before Paul Rodgers and he turned it down?

I doubt Axl was approached

But i must say i think it would have been intresting - Axl seems to be a fan and it would have been a chance for him to get out, earn some money and not be judged for new material - a tour for 'fun'

Whether Axl's vocals would have worked....having not heard him perform a Queen song i don't know

Cool idea but thats all we need for CD are more delays while Axl would be off singing for Queen.

insipid......No I don't mean this thread. I mean Axl in Queen.

The remaining members of Queen aren't really a functioning band anymore. ?It's pretty obvious that Freddy had all the talent and the rest of the guys are just trying to screw the last few dimes out of their fans before they retire. ?They aren't dumb enough to get a singer who isn't going to show up for some dates and make them lose money.

As for Axl, he's still capable of making quality music, he doesn't need to waste his time with has beens.

What the hell does Axl have so much in common with  Queen? Hell I say if Jimmy Page,Jon Paul Jones and John Bonham's son form a band , they should hire Axl if Robert Plant is busy with solo. In my book that would kick ass and be better because Led Zeppelin is much more awesome than Queen. Anyway what I'm really saying is that i disagree with Axl being in Queen ,just my opinion.:peace:

I wouldnt wanna see axl in another glorified cover band!

I'm kidding , I'm kidding.

If axl didnt have this big "project" called chinese democracy going the last 10 years or so then , yes , it would be cool to see him do a tour with queen .. maybe even record new material. But right now I think it would be best for axl and everyone if he just concentrate on taking a new group of players and the name GNR to the top again , if thats possible.

Walking away from something as hyped as democracy right now wouldnt do anything good for anyone involved.

if he was with queen, then paul rogers wouldnt be with them.

he did bohemian rhapsody with elton john so i dont see it as such an outrageous question. i think hes beet suited for nu-GN'R

interesting idea but...NO....I did have the opportunity to see The Brian May Band when they open for GnR at Copps in Hamilton(Dust and Bones) ::).....no one could fill the shoes of Freddie, not even Axl ;)

I'm not really a big fan of Queen (I actully hate them more than buckethead).  But, any NEW ACTUAL material from Axl would be great and sell well.  Hell, he could reform New Edition and I would buy the shit as long as I could hear Axl's voice.

Can't picture Axl
Singing "Radio Ga-Ga"
Or "Bicycle Race'.

"Innuendo"? Sure,
Could make "Fat Bottomed Girls" fun,
But "Killer Queen"?  No.

Bottom line is this:
Axl could sing them all well,
The style ain't him.

Never thought of them writing new songs? and only pick a few (or 2/3 of a setlist) of classics which does match his "style"?

But the idea...no..maybe another Tribute..sure but not permanent...i'm just to anxious to see what can happen with his vision of this newformed GN'R

No, Queen did not approach Axl. The reason Paul Rodgers was singing for the band on the recent tour was because Brian May appeared with him at the Fender Strat 50th anniversary concert last year. They 'clicked' so well that they decided they should tour together, and that's when Queen drummer Roger Taylor was approached etc.

With trying to stay as calm as possible here... you're VERY wrong. Freddie was indeed a very talented man, but so are the others... I suggest you check out the writing credits of some of their songs and see who wrote what - and I'll tell ya, it's pretty even across the board.

Yeah, Each member's got great musicianship.

Besides, according to my mum, the drummer was most popular of all.

I dont know whether Axl Rose would decide to agree such aproachment (if it happens) or not.. but Axl has issued that he wants to "evolve" remember that is why he fired Slash...  anyway axl is a controversial guy who doesnt have a single word.... (he said he wants to evolver the gnr sound) and he still played the old songs composed for the old members in his 2002 gnr tour... so.... lets wait and see...-

I Agree !
Axl is a Queen fan and Brian May's friend... and he fits very well in some Queen songs, but the Freddy's main style was that fusion between rock and Opera and that's not Axl style... He fits in the most rocker songs of Queen, but that's it.

I only want to see/hear Axl with GnR(the current lineup/the old lineup, any combination thereof), or solo. If he were to join a group onstage(as he has done plenty of times), that would be great. But he sure as hell doesn't need too. : ok:

Wrong!, We all know Freddie was talented, but the whole band is also great too.
For instance You know a lot of Hits were written by John Deacon?? Example: Anotherone Bites the Dust, Spread Your Wings, You're my Best Friend, I want to Break, Friends will be friends (music by Freddie Mercury), Under Pressure (yep they credited the whole group but it was majorly written by Mr. Deacon). So don't think that BoRap, Killer Queen or We are the champs are the only Queen songs.  :peace:

It has already take too much damn long to have CD released (if it ever gets released) getting axl distracted on a tour would delay CD like 20 years. I love what they did in the Freddy Mercury tribute but Im not sure songs like Crazy little thing called love and play the game would sound great with axl's type of angry voice.

This is the dumbest idea ever! Lets take this morosis to an even higher level: Axl can learn to play drums, and talk Robert Plant,Jimmy Page, and John Paul Jones into reuniting Led Zeppelin!! Or keep up with his guitar lessons and join Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Charlie Watts in an original Stones Reunion!!

Yeah, I agree with people on that Axl isn't really much of an operatic queen and basically he should be hell busy with his music for now.

maybe for a guest spot but not permanet.. I wonder if in his older age if he would want to put up with waiting around? Definetly something where he comes up and jams at certain concerts would be cool, but you just know it is never going to happen,..

I'd lose my faith in Axl if he joined Queen.I absolutley HATE his involvement with Queen and Elton John. Both them and their music sucks ass , Axl is Rock n' Roll, not fag music . He needs to return to the AFD style . So if you people are pissed after what I said, too fucking bad!

I like Queen, but I love GnR.

I find that Queen can be a bit much at times... I mean, like some sort of a rock n roll opera.  It is not as mean, gritty, or dirty, like GnR.

I highly doubt that Axl was approached to lead Queen.  Afterall, he does not have the best record of showing up for his own concerts and has induced a riot or two during his concert attending career :)

?It's pretty obvious that Freddy had all the talent

Are you kidding ??  Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon are all brilliant musicians.

Did you ever hear a Queen song with Roger Taylor on vocals? He's incredible. Brian May too.

Of course, Freddie will allways be unique in every way, but saying that he had all the talent is totally wrong.

On topic, I've said it before: Axl and TOmmy should had formed a band with Roger and Brian , called Queens N' Roses :))

Paul Rogers can cope with most of Queen's vocals.. Axl couldn't... not live at least.  I hope I haven't offended anyone... but Axl's vocals live are quite poor compared to some singers.  Freddy Mercury was untouchable.
