Title: Queens Of The Stone Age
Post by: VolcomStone on February 23, 2005, 12:07:37 AM
I just got the new Queens of the Stone Age album, "Lullabies to Paralyze" last night and I must say it has met more than my expectations.  In general it is a solid rock album that is remniscent of "Rated R" with some killer grooves.  I haven't decided if I like it better than "Songs for the Deaf" yet, but maybe after some more listens I will decide.  However, it is definitely a great release to start the year off.  It definitely has more variation track-wise in comparison to SFTD.  Look for this on March 22.

I thought that QOTSA broke up? Or at least that Nick Oliveri was fired.  Didn't he write most of the songs?

Yeah, Nick was fired.

But originally QOTSA started without Nick, so I guess they're kinda back where they started now.

Mark Lanegan sings on song 1 (Lullaby), song 10 (The Blood Is Love) with Josh, song 13 (You've Got a Killer Scene There Man) also with Josh.  He sings background on song 5 (Burn the Witch) and some others I'm sure, but it can get difficult to tell.  I could be wrong though since I am going purely by listening through each song.  After listening to this CD over and over, I've decided that it's my favorite QOTSA album.  I love Songs for the Deaf, but after a while it gets stale for me since a lot of the songs sound similar.  This CD has more variation song-wise like Rated R.  As for the band, from what I heard Josh fired Nick and they are looking for a replacement bassist.  One of the guitar techs played bass on the new album, so you won't find any of Nick's singing on it, like Millionaire or Six Shooter.

just got it....GREAT ALBUM!!!! Favorite songs are "This Lullaby," "Medication" "I Never Came" so far, not done listening to it.... I like it better than SFTD which was good but slightly overrated IMO.

I loved SFTD...it stayed in my cd player in the car for months....I have just recently heard the new QOTSA, the tune is called Little Sister and I must say that I am hooked again!

I picked this album up yesterday and have listened to it twice...

Sounds like a killer album, a definite departure from their last one and I think it'll be a "grower".

I found interesting  the low-fi production (especially the polished "big" sounding after SFTD). The drums and bass are really back in the mix and theres a real analogue kind of sound through-out - reminded me a bit of the production on The Strokes' first album.(Is this it).

The album starts out with its catchiest stuff for the first 6-7 songs then veers off into a dirgy almost gothic phase for a 3-4 tracks before heading back to a more melodic (although dark) coda.

All in all it's a very dark sounding record, almost like some ritualistic vibe running throughout - it seems to be thematic in the sense that it appears to be maintaining a story throughout.

Rather an unsettling listen in parts but very cool..  : ok:

I didn't particuarly like SFTD, but I downloaded this purely because I hated Little Sister on the first listen and wanted to know if the album was similar or whether it was a solid album.  I actually really love it.  I still maintain Little Sister is a diabolical song.  But some of the stuff on here is great, I'm particuarly partial to In My Head right now.

what the? shut up...

Just picked up this album today.   I have the other three and am a big fan.  I actually like this one a lot...may be my favorite actually and sounds a lot like their debut, to me.  I had my doubts since they fired Oliveri but they still delivered.  The best "modern rock" band around...besides Ween : ok:..............drunk

All I've heard so far is "Little Sister", which my friend played for me because he knew I liked guitar solos.  The one in that song was pretty weak, though, as was the song itself.  It just didn't jump out at me.  And I miss that cool bald bass player they had on the last album.
