"You're an idiot"

From the Chris Cornell Instagram:

One of Chris’s engineers recently reminded me of Chris’s recordings from sessions in 2016, which he still had. “Patience” was one of them. That recording was inspired by our daughter Toni, who was a huge GNR fan and asked her dad to teach her to play it on the guitar. His cover is so hauntingly beautiful; it brought it all back in a rush of bittersweet memories.

His birthday seemed the perfect time to share this and celebrate Chris, his voice, music , stories and art. A man is not dead while his name is still spoken...and, through his art, an artist’s soul still burns as bright upon all those that look up to him and his memory. Releasing music that was special to Chris keeps a part of him here with us- his heart and his soul. His love and his legacy.

I want to thank everyone who continues to celebrate and keep Chris alive. A special thank you to Axl, Slash, and Duff for continuing to honor Chris in their live shows. And to all of Chris’s fans, thank you for holding him in your hearts and always sharing your love for Chris with us. I want to thank our children too; for you are a reflection of your father, both his strength and his kindness (and helping to put together this video he’d be so proud)!

The memory of your smile still makes my heart, broken as it is, beat as fast as the first time we met. We love you Chris, Happy Birthday

Interesting arraignment...

This is too perfect to be logistically possible, but GnR needs to get with his wife and release a 2 song compilation single of him covering Patience and GnR covering Black Hole Sun and donate all proceeds to charity (possibly 2: one named by her and one by the band)

Cornell would have been the only singer who could rescue Velvet Revolver. His collab with Slash on "Promise" was fantastic.

That’s a great song, would’ve liked to see them pull that out at a Guns show over black hole sun. It’s still a Cornell tribute since he wrote the lyrics.

It's alright. I think the original is still the superior version, but it's fun to hear Chris' take on it. Gone way too soon.  Cry

The AFI cover of My Michelle from Punk goes Metal isn't bad.

Some of the other songs, like “Patience,” we were all together with my children, we move like a caravan like, the dogs — we have three dogs — it was crazy. That one came about on the road because my daughter was a huge Guns N’ Roses fan and a huge Axl fan; she was going through the phase of literally wearing the bandana and everything. So she says, “Daddy, can you teach me how to play this song?” He started teaching her, and was like, “Yeah, that’s pretty great.” And then I think [GNR] announced that they were going to go out and tour he says, “You know, I’m going to record this. This is good, and I’ll pay tribute to them at the same time.”

----

Fair enough. So Guns N’ Roses and Soundgarden came up at around the same time… were Chris and Axl Rose friends?
Well, Axl, they were out on tour together. And Chris hadn’t told him that he did it. Axl pays a lot of respect to Chris. Every night when they’re out on tour [before the pandemic], he played “Black Hole Sun.” Every night. He did that for years. And that means a lot because it keeps Chris alive, you know, and that’s the most important thing for me, for my children, that he’s talked about all the time.

That's pretty cool.

I've always wondered if they were friends or had any kind of interaction over the years apart from touring together in the early 90's. I know Chris was friends with Duff and Slash, but with Axl you never know. None of the grunge bands were really kind with our man, even Dave Grohl would be making fun of Axl until half a decade ago.

By the way, Chris' cover album is beautiful. I love it.

Many of those bands at the time acted like GN'R was the enemy and lumped them together with bands of the same era. Even though, we knew, and history has shown, that GN'R had little to do with the so called "hair bands" of that era.

You can be in a band and don't wanna be compared to the bands that came before you, but there's no way you can deny the quality of the music GN'R has put out, or the talent in the band.

You mentioned Dave Grohl. He was in one of the biggest bands around, where the leader openly talked shit about Axl and GN'R. The bass players were almost (?) fighting at the VMAs. I'm sure if Kurt was still alive his attitude might have changed....

So I'm sure as a singer, Chris Cornell knew that Axl wasn't just another singer from the Sunset Strip...
