Here is the issue, Bon Jovi and Metallica haven't done anything of consequence in years. Ever since people began counter programming against the halftime show (FOX did it first in the Early 90's with In Living Color) they are going for what keeps more asses on their couch tuned to the network carrying the game. Bon Jovi hasn't released anything and isn't selling out Stadiums... Metallica has cherry picked a few big shows here and there (like Rio in Vegas) but overall that band has been average for ticket sales and hasn't released anything since 2008. In 2014 when Bruno Mars played the Super Bowl he had the #10 highest grossing tour of the year (#9 in North America), Metallica was #28 and primarily doing over seas dates which is not the focus of the NFL.
Yeah, but what was Tom Petty promoting? Or The Who?
Or Prince, for that matter. For all the inevitable love post passing, people had long stopped buying Prince stuff.
But huge names, all. Just like GNR would be.

Cross check the years they performed with tour numbers... they all had active successful tours. Metallica and Bon Jovi haven't done that in years. Not a shot at them, but the NFL is looking for eyes to stay tuned in and what better way than to base it on how many asses they put in seats of US Stadiums and Arenas.

They seem to finally be moving past safe, white guy acts.
At least until they panic and throw in the Chili Peppers, anyway.

I hear ya, but with the case of the Super Bowl being played in the NYC area for the first time, you have to give it to the local guys. Bon Jovi will sell! Billy Joel has 33 consecutive sold out shows at Madison Square Garden. I think that surpasses Bruno Mars. I really hope that GNR will be a halftime show. I think it would be great!

I get what you are saying, but they aren't looking to win over the 70-100k people in the building (who are almost never locals), it's the 50 million people watching at home and Super Bowl Parties.

I would defently be taking a crap during this time if billy Joel or Bon jovi played half time. Boring
Unless they do a mash up of born to be your baby and piano man. Born to be your piano man

I think they want to avoid "defining" what it is or isn't for now as they don't really know. It seems like they are having fun being on the road and plan to continue around the world next year.
Beyond that, who knows. I doubt they do.
Has anyone ever been in a relationship were people asking "When are you getting engaged" "When are you getting married" "Are you going to have kids"

Much as Axl can't go back to touring with a bunch of guys named Harry, can Slash go back either?
I would say no. Unless you are going to overly just play solo stuff.
Much like I never need to hear who the hell knows who up there with Axl and try play the solos on 'Estranged' any more, I don't need some rando next to Slash trying to pull off WTTJ.
That shit was fine when thought the guys could never work together. Now we see they can, who the hell needs that watered down crap?
Can't argue with a word of that logic DX
