Something like what Bruce Springsteen does:
http://live.brucespringsteen.net/catalog.aspx

What you all think about this? I know I would love to buy a good quality audio of the show I attended. Add to the files a few pictures shot by Kat at that particular show...and there you have a nice memory in good quality! Heck, I'm listening the shit out of some bootleg of the Vegas shows...just because I was there. Would by  a release in a heartbeat!

Slash did this back in 2010 with Myles Kennedy, I think I have the recording of one of their shows in Manchester...so it can be done. And the band sounds excellent, no reason not to make the recordings available...

Just a thought, maybe the right person gets to see this and sees the possibilities of a new revenue stream. Again, don't need to reinvent the wheel, just check out Springsteen and talk to Slash.

Yes, I'd definitely be interested if they'd release a physical copy of every show. Wouldn't pay for a digital copy though.

Pearl Jam has been doing this too and I think it's been working nicely for them and the fans.

All bands should do this.

What does it really cost?  You are recording the shows anyway.  And selling them through your website does not require any promotional or advertising cost.

I would buy a copy of any show I attended, or any show that I thought the setlist looked good.

I always thought the petitions to bring back certain band members or to bring back certain songs to the setlist were silly. Not the way to go to make such things happen imo.

When it comes to this case, I talked a little bit about it in another thread. Since this is a service that the band has the opportunity to offer, but maybe is uncertain if it's worth the work involved, maybe they would be happy if we could contribute with a showing of interest ? a showing with a considerable size.

Maybe not a petition to *demand* them to provide this service, but more of a huge list of people who would be interested in buying such a product if it existed.

If we wanted to be heard, it can't be a list of 100 people, but rather 5-10,000 people.

I don't think their cost would be that high. But it depends on what level they would want to do it. Some post-production has to be involved to make small adjustments to the mix and also do a proper master. Do they want to provide the opportunity of buying physical copies of the shows?

I think the record company has to be involved when it comes to releasing songs officially.

There is probably a little more to it than what we think it is. But probably not an overwhelming amount of work.

Metallica is the gold standard when it comes to this.  Every show they have done since 2004 is on here along with a lot of select shows from their whole history.  They offer MP3 and FLAC, along with downloadable artwork. You can also buy just the songs as well, like iTunes, so you can mix and match songs from different shows. Its amazing.

Is there a way to find out how many copies they sell for each show?

It really depends on how much they want to do it high profile. I just assume the record company would be more than willing to release *anything* with this lineup. And maybe all the old grips that prevented the band to release new material is gone now that Axl, Slash and Duff are together again?

Yes, I don't think the record company would be against the idea, they probably welcome it. I was just pointing out their likely needed involvement in a context where it's probably not for GN'R to just release the shows at their own will. Like tomorrow GN'R would just decide "let's do this", and start uploading the shows ? they are probably not allowed to do it that way.

There's likely a bit of paper work and bureaucracy involved.

It would be great if they did that. A lot of bands have started doing it. It was all really started with Pearl Jam when they did it way back in 2000. Now bands like Springsteen, Phish and Metallica do it.

It wouldn't cost much to do this really. I think the going rate ranges from $10 for MP3s to 13 for FLAC to like 16 for FLAC HD and 25 for a physical disc.

I like the idea of a massive petition! Heck, I can set the whole thing up! How do you think we can reach a massive audience of thousands? I mean besides the forum people. We can put the link to the petition on forums, the band's Facebook, twitter...Any other ideas for promoting the petition?

I'm totally set to do this, let me know if you all think it's worth the trouble. However we can try and see what happens.

Here's an example of what it could look like, just as an attachment to a possible petition, for people to see what they sign up for. Not in any way price-demands towards GN'R or anything like that, it's just loosely based on prices used by other artists offering the service.

For people unfamiliar with such services, it's merely an example of what such a service could be.

This is awesome! If you don't mind, I'll use this in some way shape or form. Ok, I'll work on setting up such a petition. As soon as I'll have a link and some ideas put together, will get back here for feedback. Really psyched about this, wonder how much traction would get. I'm on it.

Here's an idea for a text. It should be looked over by a native English-speaker to correct grammar mistakes. The content itself could probably also need some altering, bring your ideas forward. Remember, this must also be aimed at people not frequenting the forums, so that's why I have written a bit of background to the band and the tour.

PETITION

Guns N? Roses is a world-famous hard rock band who emerged from the streets of West Hollywood in the 1980s. They have several successful albums, singles and music videos which has brought them millions of fans the world over.

This year, Guns N? Roses has begun a concert tour billed as the Not In This Lifetime? Tour, which marks the return of lead guitarist Slash and bassist Duff McKagan to the band. Axl Rose, Slash and McKagan are now playing through all their greatest hits as well as a lot of ?deep cuts? from their discography on this particular tour. They are accompanied by long-time keyboardist Dizzy Reed, rhythm guitarist Richard Fortus, drummer Frank Ferrer and second keyboardist Melissa Reese.

They have already played through what can be called a warm-up leg which included a club show at the Troubadour, two back-to-back arena shows at the new Las Vegas venue T-Mobile Arena, two headlining performances at the Coachella Festival and two sold-out nights at the Foro Sol stadium in Mexico City.

Furthermore, they have announced the first North American leg of the tour, playing stadiums across the United States as well as Canada this summer.

The shows so far are getting rave reviews, and the band seem to be at the top of their game.

In light of this massive tour that is underway, many fans would joyfully welcome an opportunity to own audio recordings of these historic concerts. Many other artists offer a service to the fans where they can buy and download audio recordings from their concerts. Some fans would love to have a recording of the show, or shows, they themselves have attended, and others would maybe go to further lengths and buy many or all concert recordings. We are talking about a worldwide fanbase, Guns N? Roses has fans from all corners of the world.

We also present an example of how such a service could look like, with ideas taken from other artists that already provide the service. The price points are in reality just made up, but are somewhat realistic as this is the price level most other artists are at. (PDF)

This is a petition, not to demand anything from Guns N? Roses, but more a showing of interest for such a service to the fans. If this is a service that sounds great to you, and you would most likely be using if it existed, please sign your name to the list.

This petition is created by fans, for fans, to hopefully share the enthusiasm for this idea to the band and its management. This petition has no direct affiliation with the band.

There probably aren't many people reading this thread, but for those of you who are, should we make a list of what other forums everyone is a member of to make sure it could get posted and we have a chance to spread the word as widely as possible? People with twitter accounts should make an effort to strategically tweet a link to the petition, maybe try to get some re-tweets from people with a considerable following. Same with Facebook...

Sites like paradisecity.com should also be covered.

Actually it's Pearl Jam. They started this half a decade before Metallica ever did.

Does Pearl Jam allow you to buy individual tracks? Or do they make you buy the whole show?  Also do they give away free shows?  There was a point in time where if you attended the show you got a download code with the ticket.  That's why I said Metallica is the gold standard, because you can't do it any more fan friendly than they do.  You can even preview each track just like iTunes.  I'm not sure if Pearl Jam does all of that, if they do that's also really cool.

EDIT: I just checked Pearl Jam's website, It doesn't look like you can buy individual tracks, they kind of force you to buy the whole show, also  I couldn't preview any tracks and their catalog only goes back to 2007. Metallica offers a lot of shows  from 1981 and on, and every show from 2004 until now.

Still, this set up Pearl Jam has is pretty good, I may pick up the MSG show I went to in 2010.
