Ink fades and spreads- especially older ink, you can have tattoos retouched but there isn't much cure for them fading and spreading, which results in them looking darker.

I have one on my shoulder from 1990 and it looks like a flower-shaped bruise now.

Yep, you can see black ink obviously smeared across the tattoo.  That's not the result of "fading".  Fading wouldn't make the entire tattoo look that blacked over.

People started noticing back in 2002 that it had been blacked out at the 2002 MTV VMAs when Axl was being interviewed by Kurt Loder.

A tattoo was that fading in 1992 and was nearly black then, looked even darker 10 years later?



The entire tattoo was blacked over - which is why you can still see the blonde in Duff's hair and Izzy's skull in 2002. Right.....Makes perfect sense.

That tattoo is over 30 years old. Tattoos from back then bled together over time more than the ones now (advances in needles & ink have helped big time; you want to see even more extreme bleeding--look at the ones on the old dudes from WW2. You can't tell what any of them are. But they're still cool because it was more badass to get one back then ). Even so, I always thought Axl had the coolest tattoos in all of rock. I remember when GnR came out; hardly anybody had multiple tattoos. Now everybody and their sister has full sleeves. I think he looks pretty good in the photo. 3 more weeks...
