I see some comments about opening songs that have been used on past tours.
Which is interesting considering all those people who comment on the setlists.  hihi

Did you do an analysis of those who complained about the set list and those who didn't?

No I didn't.

All I know is that some were saying the setlists were too similar and now when there's a discussion about the first song of a hypothetical show, many request songs that have already been used to start shows.

Shows you that the setlist complaining is a bit misdirected.

I get your point. But it's just about the opening song, a tiny part of a setlist. And of course, it would be cool to see the first song change from this to that during a tour, but at least I thought this thread is in the form of "if you'd have to choose one".

Betting odds would think

The starting song will be one of the few mentioned

If I was to bet....

The first song under the new old gnr  would be

Pffffffffffffffft.

Misdirected huh? Yeah, anyone want to make a pie chart of the percentage of shows since 2000 that started with Jungle or Chi Dem? We'll save that little tiny almost near non-existent slice marked 'others' for you bud.

Not complaining, honestly, Jungle opens most shows because it should open most shows. It's a must-play, greatest hit that people will be majorly disappointed if they buy a GNR ticket and don't hear and the opening slot is where it damn frickin jolly well arseing belongs. But "oh, they changed it up a handful of times before they immediately switched it back over the course of 14 years" is proof repetitive setlist complaints are invalid.  Undecided ummm...

I think WTTJ is a opening song that both diehard fans and "normal" rock/metal fans never get tiered off. It has a lot of energy. i thought Chinese as an opener was very cool. There are a couple of songs i could see as openers.. It so easy (like back in the days). You could be mine..  drool ...., reckless life...

I think the intros they have used since 2001 is great.. sets the mood! But it would also be great to just start the show with the drumsintro from you could be mine... beer

Stop whining already. Lighten up! Jeez. All year long Festivus with this one.

I pointed out that your kind of people who like to post their honest opinion on things they don't like about GN'R have spent quite some time posting these opinions about the setlists over the years when the band was out there touring (which also was commented on by these kinds of people). Now when there's a choice to post a preferred opening song, many choices are the logical ones that have already been used at some point.

Those are facts.

I don't think you understand what whining is.

Typically a post that ends with 'I'm not complaining' and expounds the opinion that the songs most often used as openers do indeed belong at that spot in the set would be considered supportive. But of course, you excised that rather pertinent portion of my post from your quotation because it didn't suit your purpose.

'your kind of people'. Jesus, it's like some sort of low-level rock n' roll version of racial profiling.  rofl

No, I don't understand what whining is, what humor is and I also apparently look like a person with a handicap.

Just observing what I see.
Look at your post history. The first posts you made, I assumed you were only here to stir shit up. That opinion hasn't changed in the few days you've been here.

So, prove me wrong.  ok

Sorry!
Didn't mean to hurt your feelings.

Just saw another faceless poster make claims about what I understand or don't.
Maybe it's because English is my third language. It's not easy understanding all these native speakers!
I'll try practice my English more.  ok

I think it's safe to say that if such a vote were arranged, the setlist will be as you say ? not much different from what they've been playing in the recent years.

There's no question they are playing the most popular songs, but that doesn't mean the less popular songs are better left completely out. To us they're still really good songs.

I can see both sides of the argument. On one side Axl & co wants to play the very best and most popular songs at every concert, which of course leads to a "standard setlist". On the other side, for people attending multiple concerts in a tour or attending every time GNR stops by in their town, while still very cool just to see a GNR concert no matter what the setlist is, the experience might have been even better if the set was completely different.

Yeah, I'd say if you go to a regular show and look around, a majority of that crowd would be happy if Greatest Hits was played and then a few others....

This is true for any band!
It's even more true of it's a festival show.

I'm not arguing the setlist they are playing is probably the most popular one among the masses.

But I think it is reasonable to think that a good portion of the crowd will be familiar with all the Illusions songs for instance. I don't think the crowd would've died down if they played Coma, Perfect Crime, Bad Obsession and Dead Horse.

But this is just an argument among the die-hards... The casual fan would be 100% satisfied with only the greatest hits, as you said.

Yeah.

That's why I think Chinese Democracy was a logical opening song on the last tour. The excitement level goes up when the show starts. Then once that excitement goes down a bit, we got a hit song and the excitement goes up again. It's like a boxer hitting two punches on the opponent!  Wink

Preety tied up would be a cool song to bring up again and maybe open with...

Given the last verse, seems an obvious pick for this situation, I would think.

That can be a double edged sword though.

Pearl Jam did this for years for a fan club show they did in Seattle each year.  And the fans picked the songs.  Forget 'Jeremy' or 'Animal'.  It was mostly deep cuts and b-sides.

Funny thing about that though.  Some of the versions from those concerts are pretty spotty, because they never play that stuff, and won't be doing so again either.
