Should we be removing all monuments pertaining to the Civil War? Some have been there for 100 years or more and now they seem to be offensive to a group of people. Whats next, digging up Civil War battlefields? Burning books?  Good , bad or indifferent it is a part of a region's history. 

What is scary is that removing historical monuments seems akin to what the Taliban did in Afghanistan or what ISIS did to the Roman antiquities in Syria.

You think trump cares what anyone else thinks? His words and actions prove that he is at least complicit in this alt-right bullshit that is going on. He was going on about how "they were just peaceful on Friday night" when they were marching around with torches chanting "Jews will not replace us" and "blood and soil" both of which are clearly nazi bullshit. I say: If you look around and find yourself surrounded by nazi pageantry and obvious neo-nazis and white supremecists..who are chanting Nazi/neo-nazi slogans....and you stay....I'm not sure you can be categorized as a "very fine person" anymore. I think you lose that right when you don't walk away.

And he DID create a moral equivalency between the racist bigoted protestors and those protesting against THEM (who he called the "alt left").

In addition...as suspected...there are those defending his remarks. Which, IMHO, are indefensible.

That's having LISTENED to the speech, and not consumed one iota of other news or propaganda...and not looking for a reason to defend "my guy". He's wrong. Period. And he lied, repeatedly, during his comments. Period.

I am not the author of this, but this puts it pretty well into perspective:

Media narrative vs. Trump's narrative on Charlottesville...

MEDIA NARRATIVE:

1. Neo-nazi protesters violently attacked anti-racist counter-protesters.

2. The blame falls completely on the shoulders of the protesters. It seems no MSM media outlet has attributed even a semblance of blame to counter-protesters.

3. The suggestion that "many sides" are at fault of promoting hatred and violence is an implicit defense of the neo-nazis.

4. Trump explicitly condemning the neo-nazis is just him succumbing to social pressure rather than being sincere. He's actually sympathetic to white nationalism. (Even though he stands to lose so much from taking such a position.)

TRUMP NARRATIVE:

1. Not all the protesters were neo-Nazis, many of them merely went to peacefully protest the removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee. (i.e not all protesters were bad.)

2. Many of the counter-protesters came looking to violently disrupt a lawful protest. (i.e not all counter-protesters were good.)

3. In addition to the neo-nazis, the violent factions of the counter-protesters (i.e the alt-left) share some semblance of guilt for the events that unfolded. (Trump also condemned the neo-nazis implicitly at the outset of the violence and explicitly two days later.)

WHO IS RIGHT?

Trump has disavowed the neo-nazis and pointed out that there were violent factions of the counter-protesters that need to be condemned.

In Trump's view, not all the protesters were evil, and not all the counter-protesters were saints (and vice versa.)

On the other hand, the media has refused to acknowledge or condemn the actions of the violent counter-protester factions and gone so far as to portray Trump's view that many sides were at fault as implicitly sympathetic to neo-nazism.

Let me ask you, what narrative seems more nuanced and realistic?

Maybe if you didn't let nazis march through your streets people wouldn't remember it as the town where a white supremacist committed a terrorist attack. You can't blame the "left" and "liberal media" for this when you had a literal nazi, white supremacist & kkk members marching through your streets  spouting hate and threats against anyone who oppose them. Yet you blame the left? You are literally blaming people there to legally protest a fucking nazi rally.
