I think Axl is a rare example of being both a great singer and front man.

Some are "just" one of those.....

I think thats the reason that Mercery and Rose often are considered the best vocalists, because they are good singers and front men. In their own different ways. The same can be said about other singers, but some are just a class above others ok

Yes. Freddie could sing and command an audience.

Mick Jagger is an amazing front man, but as a singer? Well....

I agree, them 2 are tops in terms of both vocal ability and stage presence.  For me, what puts Axl over the top compared to Mercury is that I don't think Freddie compares in terms of the elements of anger and aggression that Axl can churn up when he sings.  I would say the same goes for many other emotions as well, be it pain, sadness, etc.

Good point.

Not always talked about though. It seems like more focus is often put on the actual vocal range and showmanship.

I agree, but then again. Freddy had a big emotional specter too, but maybe not as many as Axl. He also had amazing vocal abilities. I don't know if there is any rocksinger that can do what Freddy did vocal vice. Axl has an unique natural voice and when he adds the different emotions to it it becomes very special indeed. I would like to add Maynard James Keenan here to. A strange stagepresence but he also adds lots of emotion to his singing

I dont think you can narrow it down to just one or two elements... for me.. (just a personal opinion).. what made Axl the greatest was being at the top of so many elements.

Stage presence 10/10
Vocal Range 10/10
Aggression 10/10
Unpredictability 50/10..... this was icing on the cake for me...

Axl was just a fucking rockstar, he had the look, the fire, the band behind him that were just as crazy (in different ways), ... and when you put it together it just created a perfect storm. I dont think we've seen all these elements in ANY front man the way that Axl had it. Thats not to say there werent other awesome frontmen... but for me.. Axl just had the ingredients. All of them!

He definitely had it all. That's why I looked up to him as a kid. He was and still is one of my childhood idols.

This is still present. I mean, he doesn't do what you're "supposed to".

I think maybe the most fascinating thing about Axl on stage is how amazing he is at it...yet for so many years, wasn't having any sort of fun with it.

I guess its like being "cursed" with a ton of athletic talent for a sport you don't even want to play.
