Should Fortus be 'promoted'?
«
on:

Since he joined GN'R in 2002, Fortus has been the quiet guitarist in Guns, and he's been the rhythm player. He's stayed loyal and in the band while Bucket, Bumble, Finck and Ashba have all gone. Is it time, perhaps, with the departures of Dj and Bbf, for Fortus to become a lead guitarist? Hire someone to play rhythm and elevate Fortus to lead?

I think Richard is happy with playing rhythm and the occasional solo, he said so in past anyways.
Could he handle playing lead, no doubt.

Nope. There is no need to change the positions
Also he plays both. So basically the band always had three lead guitarists since 2000.

No, he has a horrible tone. Very competent but an awful tone.

I thought Fortus has always been solid, always nails his solo's, lots of energy on stage, great player, always has been my fave of the new guitarists, except for Bucket. He could totally handle being the main lead guitarist.

my crew that went to the shows that I went to all thought that Richard was the best all around player of them all....that being Bumble and DJ era. He does justice to the classics and has the chops for the new.

He's solid all the way through. The perfect balance between technical skills and feel, as well as a very good stage presence. Similar to Buckethead I would say.

I would say though, in relation to the OP, I hope Richard is more prominent on the next album. Both with writing credits and performances.

If you go to his website, he has the quote posted from Axl, saying Basically Richards the guy we were always looking for. To me, Richards spot in the band should be untouchable. He is super humble, plays with unbelievable energy and has always been great with the fans. So if he wants to play more lead they should let him, if he wants to keep, doing what he's been doing the let him. I personally believe he's the one guitar player they can't lose.

Tone is very subjective... I would totally disagree, but that's just my opinion. The one that I thought had questionable tone was Ron (but his playing was amazing). I don't know if it is his pickups, the quality of other components in those Vigier guitars or his amps, but it was a very thin sound live.

How he could have joined the band in 2001 when Paul Tobias played his last gig with gn'r on Dec 31 in the same year?

Richard Fortus joined Guns N' Roses in 2001
becoming their longest serving new lineup guitarist and playing on GNR's 2008 album Chinese Democracy. The St. Louis, Missouri native got his big break when his band Pale Divine opened for The Psychedelic Furs. In 1992 this led to Fortus forming the band Love Spit Love with Psychedelic Furs' frontman Richard Butler and future GNR drummer Frank Ferrer. In 2000 Fortus and Ferrer became touring members of the re-formed Psychedelic Furs before Fortus became a member of Guns N' Roses in 2001 with Ferrer later joining GNR in 2006.

Paul Tobias was still in the band as of 1/1/2002. Richard didn't join until 2002, and played his first show with Guns in August 2002.

No. He should remain a hired gun, stand in line, and do as he's told.

Does that mean that there were four guitarists in GN'R at the end of 2001 (Tobias and Fortus at the same time)?
