I thought the expectations were that this would be more of a transitional season; seems as though their good performance this year has been more of a welcome surprise.

These days, who among the ownership group that Cashman reports to has the most 'hands-on' role in terms of team management?

I think that was the expectation from the fans, and media.  But...you've got a team in the mix, at the deadline.  You have holes. There are options on the market to fill those holes, and the ask doesn't seem to have been unreasonable. You have resources.  Your JOB as the GM is to maximize your chance for success when that happens.  You might not get these numbers from Arod, or Tex, or Mcann NEXT year.  Tanaka's arm could fall off. You have to have SOME sense of urgency, as a GM, when you're in that position.

Hal Steinbrenner is the guy who is most hands on....but, in this case, all reports are ownership is willing to take on payroll short term, or control long term, as needed to make a run.

Cash seems to be stuck on holding on to the farm system...guys who may or may not be successful (you don't know, because they have zero MLB experience).  They have 4 or 5 guys other teams want.  I don't think you give up all 5...but ONE??

If they were to miss the playoffs, this would be the Yanks 4th year running not making it.  The manager has done a stellar job, up to this point, managing a somewhat questionable pool of talent, and through injuries.  This is 100% about the GM.  A year or two..you can see past it, maybe, based on the unpredictability of injures.  But today?  Not doing ANYTHING  (or, rather, trading 2 decent prospects for a guy you essentially already had on the bench)?  Nope...you now own the results of this season. 100%.  They make it, you reap the glory.  You don't...you lose your job.  It should be that simple.
Straight up swap of Cherington for Cashman. What say you?

So now it's time for this waiver trade thing I know nothing about hahaha
August waiver deals used to be rare, or at least not as impactful as the non waiver deals. But in recent years they've become more commonplace. The big Red Sox/Dodgers deal that she'd all that payroll from the Sox and netted the Dodgers Adrian Gonzalez was a deal made in August. So teams can still make deals and improve.

Makes sense, so I would guess that he has no pressure from ownership to make the playoffs this year if he didn't make a big move... perhaps he's sold them on a long term plan.  From the outside, my perspective is that Cashman has been riding the coattails of an unprecedented stretch of success (in any sport), largely on talent that preceding his GM reign (Jeter, Rivera, Pettite, etc.), though he should definitely get a good amount of credit for that 2009 team that won it all, that was a monster.

By the way, love that Cespedes trade.. you called it early.

While I'm not sure what ownership expectation was going in....they should certainly be elevated NOW.

If he's sold them on a "long term" plan, they should sell it, and fire him.  I get not wanting to give away the entire farm system..but they didn't need to.  They needed pieces, not the overhaul that the Jays just made.   ONE of those guys would likely have been enough.

He gets credit for spending a shit ton of cash in 2009, for sure.  But...that was 6 seasons ago.  I'm not sure how long you can ride that wave.

For me, this SHOULD be his referendum.  If they make it, he deserves all the credit, and a healthy dose of "I told you so".  If not...and the Jays or O's haul the Yanks in...he should be held accountable, and fired.  It's that simple now.  By doing nothing, he really took ownership of the results.

No deal..but you might be able to have Cash this off season if you really want him.

Cherington might be the worst GM in the league right now.

Yankees were not only willing to include Mateo for Kimbrel, told #Padres would take albatross Gyorko/eat chunk of $33M owed 2016-19

Padres just never got back to them, and never actually made a trade.

Looks like a few more last minute trades now being reported Tommy Hunter from Cubs to Orioles for Junior Lake. Pirates get J.A. Happ from Seattle for Adrian Sampson.

The only good deal he's made that I can think of off the top of my head was trading Andrew Miller for Eduardo Rodriguez. E-Rod looks like he should be very good. Would've been even better if they signed Miller back in the off season, which was certainly in play. They do have a great farm system right now, but the major league talent he's acquiring isn't working out well, save for 2013. I think that may have made them a little cocky. Figured they actually knew what they were doing. 3 out of 4 last place finishes seem to be more the norm.

And it seems like most of the position players that's come up, that's been highly touted, ends up being a bust.

Maybe that's not on the GM, or the organization...but I think that it's hard not to at least go "hmmmm" and draw a dotted line back.

I can't wait for that

Gin ions said he is going to work the rotation so price is maxed out against the Yankees.    I think he could probably pitch back to back games as well hahaha.

That may not work out so well for them as price's era against the yanks is not good, especially at yankee stadium. But we will see.

The track record has not been good, but the way they manage some of these guys has been puzzling to say the least. Jackie Bradley Jr. has played real well in Pawtucket this year. He's proved he's graduated from AAA, or at the very least that he can be successful at THAT level. Yet when he's been brought up this year they give him 3 starts against Sonny Gray, David Price, and RA Dickey. He doesn't hit, so they give up on him. Is that really a fair shot? He's finally getting an extended look now with Betts on the 7 day DL. Same with Rusney Castillo. He'd get a few starts, then sit a few games. Then they went out and acquired De Aza, who let's be honest, we know what he is. You've committed 70 million dollars to Castillo. You might as well see what he can do. Is De Aza THAT much of an improvement? I think not.

And now, they brought Brian Johnson up for one start and sent him back down. Henry Owens should also be getting a look. Meanwhile they keep rolling with Steven Wright, who is a 4A pitcher at best. Their roster management leaves a lot that be desired. I'm not ready to throw in the towel on some of these prospects just yet. Not until they get some consistent playing time to see what they can do. There's no better time than now, with the season they've had.
