Papelbon to nats for aa prospect, nick pivetta

Mets rhp mejia suspended for 162 games
I just read that he will close and Storen will be moved to the setup role. I'm not sure that's the right move. Papelbon is still an effective closer, but he no longer has electric stuff. I can't say I'm real familiar with Storen, but I would've thought at worst they'd be equal and they'd stick with the guy already closing games for them. I know Pap wants to close, but tough luck if he's not the best option.

Storen has had a really good year....arguably better than paps.  And this is the 2nd...maybe third...time they've "demoted" him, while having a really good season.

Pap had a full no trade. He told them either he was named the closer, or he torpedoed the deal. Paps, who is an ass...and reportedly not a great clubhouse guy...being Paps.

I agree with you, i don't think its the right move. Paps has been effective, but his stuff isn't nearly what it was. He'd be a great setup guy, though...but his ego won't let that happen, apparently.

Everyone is lauding this deal, saying it makes the nats the ws fav. I disagree. I don't think it makes them THAT much better, and now you risk pissing off some of the guys in the clubhouse over giving paps the nod...AND introduce a guy who doesn't have the best team mate rep.  This could bite them in the ass.
Papelbon better fare well, or it could get ugly. To make such demands, you have to back it up. The Phillies are playing better of late, but they still have the worst record in baseball and Papelbon's time there has been uneasy to say the least. You'd think he'd be willing to go anywhere in any role, but I guess he needs to feed his ego. He did view himself near the level of Mariano Rivera a few years ago after all.

I heard some talk today that, really, the nats want him for oct...and whatever it takes to get him pitching in oct is worth it, because he's been lights out there (1.00 ERA).

Um...when was the last time Paps was closing meaningful games in the playoffs?

I think it's a terrible move for that team... he is no good for that clubhouse...especially with his "I'M THE CLOSER" demands. Plus, they had to guarantee his deal for next year. As a Yankee fan I have always disliked him. Also, like you just said, he hasn't pitched in a big game in a long long time.

If the Mets get one more player... I think they might take this division. They gotta show the Nats they mean business this weekend. I root for Terry Collins.

Wright will probably be back in Sept for the stretch, but who knows what he can offer anymore.  I really don't see them as legit contenders this year, not with that lineup; my realistic hope is just that they're playing meaningful games through September, I think that kind of experience for the young pitchers would be invaluable for them.

Why Baseball Managers Wear Uniforms

http://www.thepostgame.com/blog/style-points/201507/why-baseball-managers-wear-uniforms-lasorda-showalter-mlb

I'm surprised there's no rule requiring managers to wear uniforms.   Would be hilarious to see this in other sports, I think Rex Ryan would fit right in.

Are their young pitchers on innings limits for the year? That could certainly factor in.

They definitely are, but one of them, Steven Matz, is expected to rejoin the rotation from injury in a few weeks, which will put the staff back on a 6-man rotation.

I didn't realize his numbers were as good as they have been the last few years, so he is still getting the job done. But Storen has done just as well closing for the Nats, so I wouldn't mess with a good thing. Maybe Pap will be energized by pitching in meaningful games and make a big difference. Ultimately, that's what they're banking on.

6 players you recognize (and maybe 7)...in at least 2 different deals.

I can't share exact names, 'cause I'm not getting anyone in "trouble" until they are done.

I don't know who the trade partner is for either (any?) deal.  That wasn't shared. Wink

Edit: Sounds like Jayson Stark has heard the same/similar things.

Posting a link can't get anyone in trouble, somehow, right:

http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/page/tradedeadline_deadlinedaily150729/mlb-trade-deadline-daily

I will say...ONE of those names is different than one of the others I "heard" mentioned.

Since Olney just tweeted the other Padres name (the sinister 6 or 7), I'll mention it here:

If this is true... then I am really mad at Cashman.
