Marmite Militia, taking over one piece of toast at a time!!!

Tulo and Hawkins from the Rockies for Reyes, Miguel Castro, Jeff Hoffman and "an unnamed minor leaguer" from the Jays.  Be interesting to see who the other minor leaguer is.

A VERY good deal for the Jays, even IF, worst case scenario, it has ZERO effect on the outdome this year....because they have him signed through 2020, now (though, the trade converts his contract to a full no-trade going forward).  The only question is if he can stay healthy, especially on that turf.

To me, it doesn't look like a good deal, AT ALL, for the Rockies, other than as a salary dump.  Reyes is also an injury concern, but is a downgrade in EVERY WAY from Tulo (bat, but even more so on defense) at SS. Hoffman, coming off TJ surgery, looks like he might be promising.  Neither of the other prospects look like they are of much value (considering one's not being named)...though Castro might benefit from not pitching so much in the AL East, I guess.

Edit: Looks like the "unnamed minor leaguer" is Jesus Tinaco.

You can't knock it from a Toronto perspective...they get the better player...

but both teams traded away all star shortstops who are both in dire need of pitching... so from that perspective...it's a little puzzling...

is Tulo better than Reyes? yeah by a good margin... but last I checked... he doesn't pitch at all... the Jays already have 80 more runs than the next team...

I don't understand it for Colorado at all... what does Reyes do for them besides save some money in a couple of years?

Reyes is worthless to them, and they should move him...but i would have thought they could have done a lot better trading Tulo to a team like the mets for a bunch of players/pitching prospects.

Tulo would have been perfect for the Mets, but the team brass tin is too cheap to take on Tulo's contract.  Mets could have offered better prospects than the Jays, without giving up their pitching phenoms, and would not need to make the deal contingent on taking a bad contract off their hands (like the Jays did with Reyes).

Speculation is, there has to be more moves to follow, because this deal alone doesn't seem to make a lot of sense for either team. Toronto didn't give up a whole lot it seems, so they could still go after pitching. And they have even more offense now, they could deal from a position of strength. If not this season, in the off season.

As for the Rockies. They better hope those prospects pan out. I mean Tulo is having a down year by his standards, and has struggled to stay healthy. But I would've thought they could've gotten a better package. Much better.

Couple things...some hot stove, some not:

Bucholz moved to 60 day DL.  That sounds bad.

Sounds like Diamondbacks and Reds are talking about Chapman. Reportedly the asking price is HUGE.

Zobrist, and 2million, go to KC and the A's get Sean Manaea and Aaron Brooks.

Nat's close to deal with Phillies for Papelbon, but Papelbon said he will reject unless he's their closer.

There's rumors of something "big" coming, but no specifics.  But the rumblings are bigger than any of the other deals, so far.

There's other big news in the Boston sports world today so there hasn't been much talk about Buchholz.  hihi
Initially he was going to be shut down for a month and then they'd reevaluate. But, I don't think anyone thought it'd only be a month. I'd be surprised if he pitches again this season. What's the point? The Sox are in the running for a top 5 draft pick, not any sort of playoff race. So I wouldn't be in any rush to get Clay or Pedroia back. Let them heal and look towards next season.

Nothing else worthy of discussing.

The initial shock of the Tulo has kinda worn off, a  little realism

He's always hurt.

He's going to be playing on concrete in TO.

He can't pitch.

He's owed $100 mil.

And I would've loved to see him in STL. Wink

Yeah, it makes even less sense from the rox side, since reyes salary is actually > tulos in '16 and '17.

Papelbon to nats for aa prospect, nick pivetta

Mets rhp mejia suspended for 162 games
I just read that he will close and Storen will be moved to the setup role. I'm not sure that's the right move. Papelbon is still an effective closer, but he no longer has electric stuff. I can't say I'm real familiar with Storen, but I would've thought at worst they'd be equal and they'd stick with the guy already closing games for them. I know Pap wants to close, but tough luck if he's not the best option.

Storen has had a really good year....arguably better than paps.  And this is the 2nd...maybe third...time they've "demoted" him, while having a really good season.

Pap had a full no trade. He told them either he was named the closer, or he torpedoed the deal. Paps, who is an ass...and reportedly not a great clubhouse guy...being Paps.

I agree with you, i don't think its the right move. Paps has been effective, but his stuff isn't nearly what it was. He'd be a great setup guy, though...but his ego won't let that happen, apparently.

Everyone is lauding this deal, saying it makes the nats the ws fav. I disagree. I don't think it makes them THAT much better, and now you risk pissing off some of the guys in the clubhouse over giving paps the nod...AND introduce a guy who doesn't have the best team mate rep.  This could bite them in the ass.

I was thinking

I may be willing to trade Joey bats and EE

If the deal was right

I would need a ace pitcher with term , a great out fielder with term (medium bat but great fielder), and a good rental bullpen guy

I would include in the trade a stud pitcher prospect and future considerations.   (Depending if the jays make the playoffs)

I would then start smoak full time at first. And call up dalton pompee at right.    Keep the rotation at left the same.

Any takers?
