Andy Pettitte's son Josh has let it slip that in August they will retire Andy's #46 and give him a plaque in monument park.

The NL is different... LA, SF, St Louis, and especially the Nats should all cruise in to the playoffs. I like the Mets, Cubs, Padres and Marlins to compete for that second wild card spot.
I'm not so sure about LA, SF and my Cards, really like the 'Nats though.
Not sold on the Mets making a run just yet although I do think the Cubs, Pads and Marlins can make runs.

The cubs could be scary. They have young talent and good veterans and a man who can bring it all together in Joe Maddon..

Now we can add Posada and Williams. Long overdue for Williams to get honored.

I BELIEVE the delay for Bernie was that he never officially filed his retirement papers until recently.
George is my all time favorite... The Enforcer...
His hall of fame candidacy gets severely under valued... no catcher has more HR's RBi's, Runs scored or Doubles than him in the years 2000-2010... combine that with his team's success... he deserves serious consideration IMO. Plus there has never been a hint of PED use compared to Piazza and Pudge.
He had dominant offensive numbers for a catcher during that decade.

With that being said... and I am a Yankee fan... I do believe they have gone over board with retired numbers.
It's nothing new... they started a bad precedent when they started retiring guys like Reggie and Guidry, great players... but not deserving to me. Particularly Reggie who only was a Yankee for a portion of his career.
IMO... It should be only 1-8, 10, 15, 16, 23, 37 and 42.
Donnie gets the nod for carrying the franchise thru a dark time and just being the consummate professional and leader.

They've definitely jumped the shark on the retired number/monument park stuff, it's gotten almost to the point of silly and diminished the honor.
I see nothing wrong with honoring guys with a day though, all teams cash in on their history and it's a nice way to give the fans a last chance to cheer for players that provided them with memories that last lifetimes.

Agreed... the guys this year... they are all deserving of a day and a plaque... but to retire their numbers... too much..

I think with Pettitte you could make a case for his number being retired. He has the franchise record for strikeouts, third in wins, innings and WAR and if he hadn't spent 3 years in Houston he'd be first in wins. So a case can be made he was one of the best pitchers in franchise history.

If you think he deserves serious hall consideration don't you think he deserves his number retired too?

Posada will get consideration, but that's as far as it will get.
He'll top out at about 30-35% (max) during his second or 3rd year of eligibility and go backwards from there I suspect...

I think he deserves it over Andy and Bernie .. But I'd still rather the retired numbers be for immortal players.. And even tho id like to see Posada in the hall .. I don't think he's an immortal.
That's just me... I could see an argument for the other two over Jorge as well.

Agree. And not one of the 3 guys mentioned, IMHO, gets in the Hall.
Andy MIGHT be the closest of the borderline cases, if it weren't for the PED (regardless of how he feels about them being called that) use. It's his postseason stats that gets him to the borderline, IMHO. Without the PED use, he's the guy that causes screaming matches when debating "in/out".
Bernie was an exceptionally good outfielder who doesn't have one single "sexy" stat that would get him noticed, IMHO. He just doesn't quite have the numbers to get him any votes, even if he made the ballot. And he doesn't have the "Jeter-ness" to raise the profile of his candidacy.
Posada was a really, really, really good offensive catcher who threw hand grenades to second baseman and who's pitch calling was adequate. He played for some REALLY good teams, though.

So what are everyone's thoughts on the new pace of game rules announced today? They're total bullshit imo. There are already rules in place that have been there for decades. Just enforce what's already there!

No biggie for me really, tinkering that may knock a few minutes off.

And hell may freeze over before i finish typing this post lol. The batters aren't gonna keep 1 foot in the box with a threat of up to a $500 fine. That's a nice dinner out for most of them.

Where is the blue jays bullpen!
It's their ONE weakness/question mark.
I think the AL East is going to be a shoot out between the Jays and the Sox. How well the Jays bullpen ends up doing might just determine who wins the AL East this year.
I totally agree
If the Dominican boys stay healthy and Donaldson hits hrs like he should and the two young starters the jays have Sanchez and stroman live up to the hype. The jays may not need a bullpen!
Ya right.
The jays won't do squat with out a deep pen. I see my fav team finishes second behind Baltimore

One of the things I like about baseball is it's speed. I like when ball games take forever In the summer I love being out at the cottage enjoying the weather with ball games playing in the background on the tv all day long
And when I get the chance to travel and see a game live I just love the fact that you can walk around have some drinks and are not rushed
Save the speed sports for hockey.
These new rule changes are all just for the silly tv audience anyways Leave baseball alone!

They're not going to last very long, because broadcasters aren't going to shorten their commercial breaks, and they're not going to miss pitches. MLB, and it's teams, are not going to want to lose a dime of revenue, either. So the rules are going to go bye bye pretty quick. Or at least they're not going to be as exact as worded. Which means almost zero effect on game length.
I'm with Timothy. ENFORCE the rules on the books before you make new ones. Make the pitchers actually come to the plate in a reasonable amount of time.....
