It is funny but the 'leak period' of, let's say 2001 (when the Vegas/Rio 3 live versions appeared) to 2005/06 when the demos of IRS and TWAT appeared, was a much more exciting time than the post-Chinese Democracy period. I remember the forums being inundated with excited people analyzing the leaks and discussing them.

Ginger King, perhaps you can get to know someone to a degree through interviews but you would only be scratching the surface. It is a world of difference to know someone personally than to know them through interviews and what people in the media say about them.

Imagine this: Imagine Axl is a pretty swell dude with a real strong work ethic. Many people that are close to him make him out to be that way. Imagine this is the way he is, and the media really does focus on the negative stories about him because that is what people want to hear (because people love drama). Can you imagine how shitty that would be for him? I was at my friend's house the other night and his roommate mentioned to me that he didn't like GNR because of how big of an asshole Axl Rose is. I was just thinking to myself "seriously? so you know the guy?". This was a guy that hardly knew anything about GNR at all. I run into people like him all the time, pretty much every time I bring GNR up to someone new. People make Axl out to be some kind of paranoid future of GNR destroying abomination with a stick up his ass. But do any of them know him? Is that really the kind of person he is? I wonder what it's like to have thousands of people that don't even know you talk shit about you. (I am not saying this is what you or anyone here does, but I do run into it all the time).

I personally don't have much to go off of either in terms of imagining what kind of guy Axl is. I do seem to see a different picture of him than most. I guess we were each just led to different conclusions based on the evidence available to us. My intuition tells me one thing and other people's intuition tells them something else. So I am compelled to say what I do and they are compelled to say what they do.

RedNeck..

I have never met Axl.. and quite honestly I never want to... what if hes had a bad day that day..and doesn't want to deal with meeting a fan.. that would kinda ruin it for me

But I just want to say this about him, even tho people who are close to him often say how generous and caring he is...I THINK his history of violence (whether true or not) towards women has gone a long way in hurting his reputation. A lot of people just won't stand for that, and if I knew those stories were true...I would have a very hard time continuing to support whatever GNR is doing.

And aside from that a lot of the appeal of Axl Rose is the bad ass persona he has...so if people think hes an asshole for whatever reason... thats ok with me...it's part of the appeal IMO.

But, knowing how Axl thinks, .....

Seriously?? You know how Axl thinks??  Roll Eyes

Holy crap!

What a revelation. Yet another "I've read the interviews and I'm a huge fan so I know you" case.  rofl

So you're saying you can't know how someone thinks based on interviews they have given?  Why is that?  Because the interviews aren't true?  They aren't giving honest answers?

Not necessarily. Nothing to do with honest answers or fake interviews.

Just the fact that you might get an idea of what the person might do, but you don't necessarily know how he/she thinks.

You might be able to "study" and find lots of answers for questions, doesn't mean you have a better understanding of the reason for the answers. If you don't have the reasons, how can you claim you know how someone thinks? For example.

I personally don't think you can say you know how a person thinks just because you read interview and know some of the standards a person operates by (like honesty).
You can have an idea in your head, but that doesn't mean that's an actual representation of the person.  Smiley

Ok, I get your point.  I?m not saying I can order off the menu for the guy, but it?s not hard to put together a reasonable profile based on what?s in the public realm.

Hardworking, passionate, dedicated to his craft, loyal to those close to him?it would be hard to argue otherwise.  Volatile, prone to irrational outbursts (there?s video evidence to back that up), insecure and emotional, with some family issues, I think there?s evidence to support that too.

Could all of that be untrue and not how he really is?  Sure, that?s possible.  Part of his greatness, IMO, is you never really know what he?s thinking or where he is.  For a person that much in the public spotlight to be ?off the grid? for long periods of time just adds to his mystique.  You would think that a lead singer of a band would always want to be seen (and most are).  Axl, however, appears to go out of his way to avoid the media and public, never over-saturating the market with his presence.  He?s like Kaiser Soze (for any of you Usual Suspect fans).

True.

However, two things always strike me about this stance.  Not just with Axl, but anyone where people claim if you don't know him personally, you can't say.

#1) Has their entire public life been performance art?

With most famous folks, people base their opinions on how that person conducts themselves in public.  Be that in interviews, behavior at public events, etc.  If the argument is that the person is nothing like the 25 plus years of available public evidence of their behavior, then they are intentionally acting out a part in public all this time.  Does that make sense?  And to what end?  Is there some upside to being a super swell guy but positioning yourself as petty and angry?  And then it makes even less sense when the person in question, in this case, Axl, constantly complains they can't get a fair shake.  It bothers you that much, but you continually give them ammo to support the argument?

#2) This argument is a one way street.

Whenever you hear this argument, it tends to be about a guy with a bad public perception.  So, to combat that, fans and supporters of that person will cling to the theory that he could well be the best guy that ever lived and you just don't know the real him.  But is this ever true in reverse?  When a guy has a pretty soild reputation with the public, do people jump right to the fact that we don't really know him, and he could well be a dick?

Ha Ha! The internet experts know everything, they can run businesses, promote shows, market albums, and attempt to manage bands all from behind their computers.

It is truly miraculous  hihi

Hahaha.  Exactly.

Maybe he's just funning us with the "cancer" comments and saying one of them will be dead in a box before they speak again.

We should not read anything into that.  Those are non-committal comments, if anything.  Hard to get a feel.

I just finished Sean Patrick's biography of Nikola Tesla.
Was a fascinating read.
Unfortunately, Patrick doesn't personally know Tesla, so... into the dustbin it goes, I guess.

There's a life behind the Tweets, the cameras and spotlights. That's what you usually don't see. Most of these so called celebrities have an image that some are very careful of controlling. It's that part of their lives we would know about. Not necessarily the personal lives.

How many times did you hear the "Oh, I had no idea he had that kind of problems?" about a so called celebrity? And yet, people claim to "know" famous people.

Just because you've seen a person get annoyed in public doesn't mean he or she has a tendency to get annoyed more often than the rest of us!
Somebody gets a label and it's gonna follow them for a long time. Even if that is based on things from decades ago.

We're all the same way, more or less. Not everybody feels the need to post everything about their personal lives on the Internet. Hell, most people here have aliases they use so they don't need to show their real names.

Its "funny" how "people" seem to "think" that they are "experts" at "things" like "that".

Totally agree.

Most people that get to know Mike Tyson say he can be a swell guy.  I'm not going to sit here and call them liars.

But if they were to tell me they can't imagine where someone is getting this negative perception of him, well, you just have to chuckle at that.

I don't know if this deserves its own thread, but since we're talking about pretty much everything in this thread (speculation, how Axl thinks, leaks, how old we are, every Dead Horse topic ever, etc.), I thought this latest news items from Billboard is pertinent to Guns:

Funny.

Ever read any GN'R biographies? Did you get the feeling you know the GN'R members after reading one?

My point still stands, it's my opinion. If you don't agree, so what.
I think it's a bit creepy when you have people thinking they know somebody based on a public "image". Often based on negative things.

You don't want to appear as a "fan boy", it's a huge concern, but then you think you know somebody, and that's normal?

Well, I think we all pretty much new record sales aren't much of a thing anymore.

But as we've said many times, all sorts of artists still release albums.  And they don't have delusions they will sell like hotcakes.

If you are going to totally stop releasing albums, fine, do that.  But then cop to the fact that you are a nostalgia type touring band.  People act like that term is synonomous with "leper" or "rapist".  If that's what you are, that's what you are.

Others think its creepy to feel the need to so passionately defend a musical artist like it was your child being picked on on the school bus.

Creepy is in the eye of the beholder.

Different perspectives.

I'll defend what I believe in. You'll attack people, you claim to support, based on what you know from a public image.

The irony is that you made similar claims about knowing me based on my posts....
If that makes me creepy. Fine. Don't care. Been labeled so many things over the years.  Tongue

I make assessments based on public track records.  Musicians, athletes, politicians, and yes, message board posters.

How you present yourself to the public dictates how you are perceived.  Welcome to the world.
