Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal Interview

February 26, 2015

BACK STAGE AXXESS: Now this is another question I've gotta ask.  I would be amiss not to ask this question regarding your departure from Guns N' Roses.  Did you want to make any comments on that?

RON THAL: What a perfect time to talk about that.  It is 2:01 and I have to grab my next call. (Laughs) Perfect timing.

I'm not saying anything about anything.  Because it only leads to -- you know people aren't going to -- the news sites aren't going to report about raising $163,000 for kids.  More than anything I say about this.  I'm not going to hijack everything else that we just talked about by getting into it.

So, where are we? Personally I'm 90% sure Ron's gone now.

If he's gone and Axl still wants to go with the 3-guitar concept, who's your favorite to step in? Let's say it'll have to be a guitar player similar to Ron/Bucket.

John 5 was rumored before 2006, don't know if there was anything to it. He would be my favorite now anyway.

There was a rumour about Orianthi.  Not sure where it came from.
I hope Ron ends up back on board when the GNR train gets rolling again.

I do hope Ron stays, he is a cool guy. Someone said he doesn't have the looks??? Doesn't belong on a big stage b because he looks like a geek? Don't know about that, I think anyone who plays like him belongs on a stage.

And yeah, don't want Robin back, seen him back in 2006, not a fan of his solos! Now if someone doesn't belong in GNR is Robin. As soon as he starts soloing I feel like I'm at a NIN or other industrial nu-metal band concert...

I think somebody went "Hey, how about this guitar player?" and everybody thought that was it.

Am personally sick of Ron and his endless comments, I don't care for the entire way he has perpetrated and handled this entire debaucle.

Not a Ron fan.

Yes, I agree. It's entirely his fault. All of it. And he shouldn't be allowed to give any interviews or promote himself or his work because he will just further the "debaucle" that he no doubt created all by himself.

Guitar World: I know you can?t speak about your current situation with Guns N? Roses, but what was/is it like being part of such an iconic band?

Ron Thal: I?ve done a lot of things and played and recorded with a lot of people, but it actually felt normal. You don?t think of it as being iconic or this or that. You think about it as we?re a bunch of musicians getting together because this is what we do!

Guitar World: What are you most looking forward to this year?

Ron Thal: Putting out all of this music this year makes me feel alive. It makes me feel that the dimmer switch has been turned all the way up. I feel at peace inside knowing I?m doing what I should be doing and what I want to be doing.

Ron is now going to be mentioned in connection to GNR for the end of time... as long as he's out there.

So all the people who hate him now.. should just get used to it.

I think John 5 or Nuno Bettencourt would be interesting replacements for Ron.

I don't care if the is in the band or not anymore. Compared to Slash, Robin or Buckethead he never created his very own guitar sound in GN'R.

Unless something changed, Nuno is still a touring guitarist for Rihanna (he was even seen in studio with her, so maybe not only touring now).
He definitely can play any style, but no idea how he feels about Axl or GNR's music. Not funky enough?  Wink

That's a passive aggressive shot if I ever saw one.

I have said this on other forums, but I would love Axl to throw a curve ball and try to get Billy Graziadei from Biohazard.  That guy still brings 110% energy to shows every night they play and I feel like he'd bring GNR back some of that AFD attitude.  The guy is a legit badass.

So I would ultimately want Axl to bring back one of the former guitar Gods we have had back in the fold

If that doesn't pan out though.

I would like axl to bring in a guitar player.  That can sing.  That has a already sea mushed career with his own great songs.  Then on your.  Instead of the pointless guitar and drum solos and the band jamming   We could have this new guy just play a few songs of his own

Its a bathroom break either way.  Not sure what it would really change.

And are you saying he should play multiple songs of his own?  Wouldn't that Further dilute the setlist of GNR tunes that are already subject to 2 covers that will never be dropped, and at least 2 others they play each night?
