I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing, but I find it so interesting that us GN'R fans get excited when we hear from management and not the band. I mean, do you think fanatics of Metallica would be be as excited as us if Cliff Burnstein cam our with a little statement of comment about Metallica?
Is it because we as fans are somewhat deprived of contact with the band, or is it because we see the whole camp as a "family"? I like to thnk it's the latter.
Well, I'm not sure I can kill them for this.
Presumably, Fernando speaks for the band, so I think we basically accept that. We've long given up that Axl will talk to us, so we take the next best thing we can get.
Of course, then Axl will come out and say he never knew about that statement, never knew about that tour, never knew about anything...which, does sort of blow this theory to hell.
But, end of the day, Fernando actually releasing a statement is positive, I think.
I think you've hit the nail on the head with that.

On topic. It's great that they've acknowledged the lack of communication and interaction on the Nightrain. It shows they are listening, at least.
Well as far as I know the band doesn?t have a PR guy or spokeperson. So it?s management job to comunicate. Also I saw 2 things that took place recently. 1) in Mygnr there was a topic about the lack of comunication. The mods there have some degree of contact with Fernando 2) The recent Slash interview with Larry King. I?m not saying these 2 things are the reason for this statement but maybe it has something to do with that. So far this Fernando?s announcement it?s about other future announcements. Only time will tell

the time is right....
by all accounts the shows are tighter than ever before that FINALLY the band has been the same for many years and developing their own chemistry... they have a great time on stage
now should be the time to make some kind of musical statement... that this is what Guns n roses is about in 2013/14......if they dont they prove the skeptics right with their nostalgia touring cash grab statements
prove the people wrong!
and this is coming from a guy who admits to not loving every note of CD and admits to one day hoping to see a reunion of some kind of Axl/ Slash/Duff/izzy... i admit it , that group is why im a fan of the GNR brand
but that doesn't mean I dont want to see Axl keep all this stuff in the vault! I want him to succeed on his own if thats what he chooses... im rooting for him..and the time is now!! his band is talented, eager and willing...lets go already !

I read this kinda statement a lot about tours being cash grabs. My first thought is always "no shit", and my second thought is "when is a tour not about making money?"
So, I'll state it clearly: touring is ALWAYS about "grabbing cash" and making money. It is a revenue stream, and a big one in the era of declining album sales.
I don't see how there is anything to prove wrong. These are musicians making a living playing music. Playing music live is a key way to make money.

Well yeah, of course a reason (if not the main reason) a band tours is to make money. They're muscisians. It's their job. With GnR, the question is what type of tour is on the horizon (assuming, of course, that another tour is in the works): 1. a greatest hits notalgia tour or 2. a tour that shows the band is still a creative entity and out there promoting and releasing new music. That, IMO, is the big question, and I'd like to know which direction the band is headed in. I'm happy with the shows I've seen over the past couple years, but they have all been the former (note: that is not me complaining, btw). This iteration of GnR has been together for awhile now, and it'd be great if they were interested in the latter.

I agree with Ali's point that all tours are "cash grabs". No shit they are. I never got that taunt.
However, they have been using the same basic setlist for 13 years now, and about 5 different tours. I think the argument they could mix things up a bit more is a valid one.

Ermn, not really.
You could say "the sets have been leaning towards the familiar hits that the average Joes in the audience know instead of the more obscure tracks".
Using your logic, every band who plays less than three-four new songs on each tour is "using the same basic setlist for X years".
Bringing up the usual "I don't like the setlist" thing into this topic... Deja vu.....
In my opinion the update is just stating the obvious, the band took a break after the tours. Some fans started panicking. So there was a need for an update.... Stating that obvious thing.

Erm...yes, really.
There is very little different in this setlist over the past 13 years, and that encapsulates about 5 different tours. Axl has an entire double album that he does not touch past the same few singles. That's just a fact. Look how much of a news event it was when he decided to start doing 'Civil War' again. One song. From an album that came out 20 years prior. But, to be fair, it was news, because it was so rare.
I'd tell you to compare that to any other band's last 5 tours, but that tends to be when you hide behind "but they aren't like other bands!!", so I won't waste my time.

I think the "cash grab" argument is a different one from the setlist argument. Actually, I think the "cash grab" argument is not even a valid argument at all unless there are some bands I'm unaware of that don't actually profit from their tours.
The setlist hasn't changed that much. I agree. But, I'm glad that "Estranged" and "Civil War" are back. I think the sets are great in terms of balance and appeal to different types of fans, actually. I would love to hear some more CD tracks, and maybe another one or two UYI tracks. But otherwise, they are great.

Its promising. At least its an acknowledgement of fan's frustration with lack of communication and his attempt to get things going. I think there's more going on than we realize and 2014 will end up being a great year.
No offence, but there's been a lack of communication with this band since 95. It's been a constant issue and while it's nice to hear from Fernando, it doesn't have the impact it should because of the past.
Yep.
The deadbeat dad that spent YEARS blowing off the kid's birthday and other important events can stroll in one day and say its all going to be different. But any kid with half a brain will likely roll their eyes and mutter some variation of "believe it when I see it."
Well, we are that kid and Axl is our deadbeat dad. He's got a lot of past sins that factor into any equation about the future. That's just life in the big city.
I feel your analogy, but its a rock band, not your dad!

Happened to catch a live broadcast of Aerosmith playing live in Brazil, they played one new song from their latest album. So is it the same tour as the last one?
A bunch of bands play three-four songs from their latest album on their tours, is that a major change? Ok, so they change the order of the hits, but you're basically getting the same songs on most tours. The hits.
You obviously don't think it's the same setlist since they might play Hit A after Hit B compared to the previous tour.....

It seems that the subject of the same
setlist comes up every little bit. Let's wait and see what the update statement will be and then chat and argue

Personally I think changing the order of the set list DOES mix things up. Gives a whole different experience and you don't know what to expect. Think you miss the point, or you know exactly what the point is, but again, your trying to justify

Until they release a new album, I think that the main structure of the setlist is perfect! Chinese has a great intro to start off a show and it also makes a statement right off the bat that they aren't just relying on the classics. Then you get hit with jungle, it's so easy and brownstone...then after that it's anybody's guess. The order from there depends on which songs got added or removed from that specific show. The regular set ends with nightrain which is a perfect choice...and the very last song is PC...which again is exactly where it should be. If I had one request it would be that civil war was played in every show...it was for about a year, but then became a "wildcard" song. But to me it's a perfect mix of every album and the order the songs are played in is the right order.

Yea, the setlist is fine. I only wish TWAT was a regular but thats me. If you're an average music fan and you go to a GNR and they only play CD songs, then that fan would be disappointed. And theres only a small percentage of die hards like us that go to shows. I went to an STP show last month, and I was disappointed they didn't play Plush, picture how a general fan would feel if they go to a GNR show and they don't play SCOM. Wouldn't make too much sense ....

I agree. An average fan will love a GNR show! I just think changing the songs around would be pretty cool.

The statement sounds like it's just for the paying fan club members and probably things to make their membership worth its while.

I would just like the fan club to include things that happen consistently that make you drool with excitement. Stuff like video interviews with members every fortnight or month. Maybe a few video tutorials for guitarists on how to play songs the "Nu GN'R" way, much like the Fortus lesson recently where he played his KOHD intro. Also articles with people behind the scenes with the band, like the techs, sound engineers or even stage assistants. All of this would make the fan club more appealing, where as at the moment it's just like any other forum out there.

It's all a bit limp really isn't it? "Here's a statement about getting you some info, hopefully..." Yeah, yeah, at least they released a statement etc.., but it's just delaying tactics in my opinion while nothing is happening as usual.
Can you imagine other huge bands and GN'R contemporarys like U2 or Metallica giving the same wishy-washy statements and being so un-productive? I know GN'R have been touring so much recently, but so have SO many other bands of their stature and they're releasing new albums, dvd's and so on.
I'd LOVE to hear some new stuff by GN'R, even just one single release on iTunes for example and I'm sure we're all in the same boat, but let's not pretend that this update is of any importance.
