The Replacements' Songs for Slim EP Gets Commercial Release, Auction BeginsPaul Westerberg, Tommy Stinson, and Chris Mars of the Replacements have reunited for Songs for Slim, a covers EP to raise money for their former guitarist Slim Dunlap, who suffered a stroke last year. 250 autographed copies of the 10" vinyl EP will go up for auction on the Songs for Slim website beginning Tuesday January 15th at 8:00 am PST. The auction will last for a 10-day period.
The EP features Westerberg, Stinson, drummer Peter Anderson and Westerberg's touring guitarist Kevin Bowe covering Dunlap's "Busted Up," Leon Payne's "Lost Highway", "Everything's Coming Up Roses" from the Broadway musical Gypsy, and Gordon Lightfoot's "I'm Not Sayin'". Mars contributes a solo version of Dunlap's "Radio Hook Word Hit". The website has this listed as "the first new Replacements release since 1990's All Shook Down."
Each 10" is autographed by Westerberg, Stinson, and Mars and comes with prints of four rare photos, a poster of Dunlap, a print of the EP cover (painted by Mars), and a download card for the EP.
The tracks will be for sale to the general public digitally after the auction ends, with a regular 12" release due out this spring.
After the EP, the Songs for Slim project will also auction a series of limited edition split 7" records featuring artists covering Dunlap's songs, including Craig Finn of the Hold Steady, Frank Black, Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Jakob Dylan, Deer Tick, Lucero, the Jayhawks, John Doe, the Minus 5 (featuring members of R.E.M. and the Decemberists), and more. The songs will also be available to purchase digitially.
