I Am Inconquerable

« Reply #420 on: August 19, 2013, 11:41:43 AM »

There's multiple examples in history of artists trying to get away from contracts. It's not as easy as "ok, bye!".

I don't know any inside info on the recording contracts or what goes on at the record company. All I know is what I saw happen in 2008.

/jarmo

Do you know if GNR even owes the label a record or are they simply "under contract" ?

I always thought Live Era, GH and CD were the last 3 albums GNR had to give in.

No idea about the details of their contract. But the band is still listed on the Universal Music web site.
I would assume the next release will be on the same label as the previous one.

Im sure maybe it does... but i have no clue about how that works

All official releases so far in GN'R history have been through Geffen/Universal Music.

Including the VHS and DVD releases of their Tokyo shows and music videos.

GNR Rules!!!!

From what I know, Rock Fuel is a third company that is hired to film and produce live gigs. After it?s done, they get released under the Band?s label, like they did with Jane?s Addiction, Smashing Pumkins, Korn, etc.   They are hired by artists from different labels. That?s why they told us last time "we are waiting release dates from record company"... their job is done, now it depends on Universal (in the case of GNR).

The point is that many gigs from other bands that were announced before GNR are already out or in pre-order.  We all know that GNR relationship with their label is complicated (as GNR itself, we have to admit).  I just hope they won?t cancel this one too (let?s remember we had South American 2010 videos produced, then London 2012 - not by Rock Fuel - and now this one).

Let's not forget the "Axl Rose Documentary" which followed the band throughout the 2006 European and US tours. This was produced by Lush Productions, and looked amazing... such a shame that it too got canceled for one reason or another.

For whatever reason I just think the label doesn't like releasing anything except from the original band. And if that's the case they should release gnr so they could do their own thing

It seems they spent too much money on Chinese Democracy, and as it took so long to get released, at some point they stopped supporting the band, even though being paid back later (with the best buy deal).   Both sides had their faults. I remember the time when they (re) released the Tokyo DVDs and then the Greatest Hits album (against the band?s will) in order to recover the money invested...

It?s just a guess, but sometimes I think Axl didn?t promote the album just to screw with the record company (as the money problems were "solved" by the best buy deal).  beer

It's got me fucked why the last bunch of DVDs/Movies/Documentaries or whatever haven't been released.

This isn't something new with GN'R, though. Remember the "Perfect Crime" UYI Doco that was never released?

No detriment to the band or label, but I do think there has been many mistakes on both ends.

I'm still waiting for the 01/01/01 DVD.  hihi

A real shame that 01.01.01 DVD is sitting in a vault somewhere, a long with the 12.29 & 12.31 shows. In my opinion those were & always will be the only Vegas shows that matter.

Lets face it- there's probably SO much stuff sat in the vaults we'd love to hear/watch, and happily pay for. The fact we can't is so massively frustrating, and absolutely insane from a business point of view.

I could be wrong and not remembering correctly, but I was at the 11.21.12 show and I thought I remember Axl saying something to the effect that 'we are recording this show in case you haven't noticed and it will be released as a DVD next summer' (2013). I am paraphrasing. And I could be inserting words that I hoped Axl said, yet, I think he said something to that effect.

Let's take this concert film for example.

The band only said they were gonna film it. That's it.
As far as I remember, I never saw the band announce any release dates or anything for it. Everything was done by the company who put it together.

Now, after a while they said the record company had to decide on a release date. As usual, GN'R is, as far as I know, signed to a record company. This company has said nothing in regards to the release. Neither has GN'R.

Yet it's GN'R's fault?
How do we know that for a fact?

I don't know what gave some of you the idea that the record company seems like huge GN'R fans? I'm not under that impression, considering the handling of the release of GN'R's last album.... I don't know if anything has changed since. I do know that record sales are going downhill, so the optimism in that industry doesn't seem like it has increased.
