Probably US only iTunes release at the moment.

Like the Blu-ray/DVD itself was US only at first.
Hopefully it'll get released digitally in more markets as soon as possible....

Great news. Unluckily, the ''HD'' version available for download is 720p and is 5.36 gb. A 1:1 copy of the original bluray is around 25 gb. Looks like I'll keep on waiting...

I think that's "normal" considering it's a digital release and not a copy of a Blu-ray.
It's iTunes. I don't think they want people to try to put a 25Gb file on their 16Gb iPad to watch. Wink

For reference sake, the recently released Depeche Mode concert movie is also about 6Gb.

Maybe im too old fashioned, or simply ''old'', but I still find incredible how people can watch a multicam, professionally-recorded show, in something like an ipad in a heavily degraded way. I want to BLAST this at home, and make the walls shake!!! After I attended the cinema to watch this, i even find hard to watch the 1:1 copy I have downloaded in my smart TV.

The thing is I want to BUY (not illegally download, like I did, waiting for an ocassion to do it legally to help the band) the uncompressed thing and i just cant. It's not available in my country, not in a physical way, not for download.

Well... I remember buying things on VHS.  hihi

I bet that digital release is better quality than that.
Next up is UltraHD and then we'll be saying "I can't believe we used to watch regular HD"....  Wink

startled by a skeleton that failed the challenge

« Reply #1568 on: December 15, 2014, 09:31:38 PM »

Hi everyone! I have internet access for a minute so I thought I would post about my recent first experience with AFD:

After a long wait I finally got around to watching Appetite for Democracy. I am ultimately happy that I did not get to see it until now. I honestly did not know what to expect from this thing. I saw the clip of Sweet Child O? Mine from the concert on youtube and did not like the way Axl sounded (I will get back to this later, but on the DVD he sounded completely different???).

My fianc? bought the DVD for me as a Christmas gift that I demanded she give to me early (I gave her a gift early as well and I think she is happy with how things turned out). I eagerly waited for the end of the semester knowing that when I got home this DVD would be waiting for me. When I first opened it and looked at the track listing I was pretty disappointed because there were so few CD songs on there. ?Why do a DVD like this? The Tokyo DVD already has amazing performances of a lot of this material on it! I want to hear CD stuff!? ?Later I would come to reconsider this opinion.

I found myself in the living room of my home with my father, my fianc?e, and  an elderly women that is a close family friend when I asked my dad if we could interrupt their usage of the tv and watch AFD. My old man was once a very big fan of GNR. He actually has the Appetite for Destruction logo tattooed on his arm although at this time it is pretty faded on account of his spending so much time in the sun (he is a roofer in AZ). When he was young and in his prime GNR was very much his thing. He wears a bandana all the time and I am almost certain that Axl was the original inspiration behind this.

Before I put the DVD on my dad asked me if it was a recent concert. I told him it was from around two years ago and he was surprised that they were still around. This was despite the fact that CD is my favorite album of all time and that I have talked to him about it and played it for him on many occasions. My old man?s musical tastes have changed over the years quite drastically; at this time his favorite artist is Alan Jackson.

When I started the DVD my old man was surprised to see what Axl looked like. He referred to how seeing such an iconic figure from his time age in a somewhat similar fashion to himself (a bit thicker and older looking in general) made him feel a little better about himself than usual. On the other hand, in the confusion of new material (the opening track is Chinese Democracy) he seemed to begin to harbor some doubts about the performance. ?Is Slash still there?? No dad (We?ve been over this already damnit). ?What about Duffy (for some reason this is what he insists Duff?s name is. Perhaps he is confusing Duff?s name for Izzy?s)? Or is anyone left from the original band?? Well the original keyboard player is still there. (At this point I will admit I was feeling pretty annoyed. We had gone over all this before. I was so excited to watch this concert (and had been drinking a little) that my feelings were super charged. When I started to think we might not be able to enjoy this together or that my dad would start focusing on fault finding I could feel my heart beat speed up, my throat get dry, and even my eyes felt a little watery). Here I would like to mention that for us, watching this DVD with the volume up really loud made us feel like we were actually at the concert. The fact that it was live and that we did not know what to expect only added to the feeling that we were watching a performance that was taking place at that moment and happening for the first time.

Just when I thought things were not going to go the way I wanted them to, DJ started to tease the audience with the opening chords from Welcome to the Jungle. From that moment on my old man was hooked. He knew the words to all the old songs (even sang along) and the performances of the new songs were captivating enough that his attention stayed effortlessly fixed on the concert for most of the whole show.

My dad got a very big kick out of Axl being thicker yet still being such a great performer. Because of some complaints I heard about his performances recently I was worried that he might not be active on stage or run around like Speedy Gonzales on crack anymore. Fortunately I was worried for nothing. Axl seemed incredibly full of energy. He reminds me of these goats that a friend of mine has. They are thick around the waist and have very skinny legs but in the blink of an eye they will leap onto the top of the roof of their dwelling and take off over the fence like a bat out of hell. As far as we could tell, the band (singer and all) absolutely nailed the performing end of the deal. Our elderly friend?s reaction to the DVD was quite humorous. She did not know about GNR and she was very drunk. Throughout the concert she would ask me some questions and I would fill her in a little on the background of the band. Many times (starting with the cover of no quarter) she would turn to me and say something along the lines of ?Now this part of the concert is for me! I don?t like any other part but this part of the night is my part. Wow, so pretty??. She didn?t care for all the ?shrieking? though- ?Is that how he used to sound back in his prime?? ?Yes, exactly!? my old man answered in an eager tone.

After DJ?s awesome solo (Ballad of Death?), when Sweet Child was about to begin, I was worried about what I had seen earlier on the internet. I thought that this might actually be a little embarrassing to watch. Much to my surprise, AXL SOUNDED FAR BETTER ON THE DVD THAN HE SOUNDED ON MY COMPUTER! I don?t know why. Could it be that my computer speakers aren?t good enough to emit his voice from the concert properly? Did he overdub the vocals? I cannot explain this phenomenon so I will not even try. All I can say is that Axl sounded amazing on every single song (according to me, my fianc?e that does not drink alcohol and who is not all that familiar with GNR?s live performances, and my old man).

My initial disappointment with the track listing soon faded after realizing that if this concert were to have consisted of mostly CD material, my father would not have been able to enjoy it. Ultimately I think this way was better because he got what he (and probably most of the fans out there) wanted but was also exposed to some great performances of newer material at the same time.

My bottom line is that this DVD is really something special. If you don?t own it yet and have some cash to spare, get out there and support your favorite band! My fianc?e got the DVD for around fifteen bucks off Amazon. It was not expensive at all and we got more than our money?s worth. The performances were phenomenal. For me, watching it was the most remarkable GNR experience I have had since CD was released. I highly recommend it. Besides, think about this; if it wasn?t great, why would Axl have bothered working so hard to get it released even after all this time has passed since the original performance? We all know how high his standards are. I believe that if this wasn?t at least pretty close to what he wanted to give us then we would not have it. So for the sake of posterity, put aside your bootlegs for a second and give this thing a watch so you can have a real opinion on it because it is a very important piece of GNR history. Who knows, you or someone you know might even fall in love with the band all over again the way my old man did.

No, your bacon killed my review. Y'know, I've been wondering... can a bacon man eat himself?  nervous

I've seen the DVD about five times now, and it's still really fuckin cool.

How legitimately live is it? I recall Sammy Hagar recounting VH Live w/o a Net and how he redid many vocals while reviewing the show on a movie theatre screen than EVH came in and touched up some guitar work..The UYI Japan release seems authenticly live even though touch ups may have been done, as in most live releases...

It's not all matching footage to songs live.... In heavens door, you see a couple of different shots of fortus and his clothes are different in the space of a few seconds. The footage and music are not all live from the same show then.

No, I'm sure you can tell the rest of the band are still playing the song... It's not a criticism, just didn't sync up.

That's weird. Didn't even notice it to be honest.

It's not all matching footage to songs live.... In heavens door, you see a couple of different shots of fortus and his clothes are different in the space of a few seconds. The footage and music are not all live from the same show then.
Someone here said that they also filmed the show after the nov 21 show, (or saw cameras filming at the show) My guess is that they used some footage from the next show to fill the gaps where no camera had a good angle on the nov 21 show.

My only criticism is the tight editing, there is no natural gaps between songs, it gets a bit tiring to watch when the set is played straight thru without any breaks. The one before Used to love her is specially annoying.

I don't remember if they filmed two shows. They might have had some gear at another show and shot additional footage. Not sure about it though.

Ok, I noticed the thing you mentioned now. Richard changing his outfit and guitar during the song.  hihi

^^ That's funny, I haven't caught that yet. I've seen it so many times now, it was easy entertainment over winter break for the visitors I had. I would mention that I had it once we started drinking and they would say "Really, it's a recent one?". They'd be curious about it and next thing I knew we were rockin' out. I'm going to show it to my friends here at ASU soon too now that I'm back. My friend from the Netherlands that didn't actually know about GNR until CD came out has been nagging me to bust it out but I've been saving it for the weekend so we can watch it with more people and not worry about being hung over the next day.
