We lost both of my grandparents tonight. My Grandma had been battling Alzheimers for awhile, my grandpa was recently in the hospital with pneumonia. He was ok for a few days after he got home. Then Wednesday morning after eating some eggs he started coughing really bad. His nurse put him on oxygen and he went to sleep and was never really conscious again. The next morning my Grandma realized how bad he was and had a seizure, she was kinda ok the rest of the day. The next day though she really took a turn for the worst too. They passed 34 minutes apart, my grandma at 10:44 and grandpa at 11:18.

Condolences - it's an overwhelming thing to go through, all the arrangements that the family has to do is usually hours after it happens, and everyone's feeling numb or on edge, there might be some arguments, because they start thinking about the bank accounts, wills, life insurance, calling everyone up letting them know, the obituary, etc. Best thing you can do is be the calm stable one, pulling out some of the old photos of the happy times, get a few bottles of wine ready, some of the mementos that mean most to everyone, and celebrate their life.

Expect people to say awkward things, and people you haven't seen since you were little come out of the woodwork, esp. if they were involved with the community and had a pretty healthy social life.

Why must it drift away and die?

Very sorry to hear that  Sad
My grandmother also died on July 29th, however it was in 2000. To this day I still don't like that date.
