I agree Emily, DJ seems like a positive dude and I don't seem him developing too big of an ego or anything so I have a feeling he will continue to be a very stable member of the lineup for a long time.

Chinese Democracy out 2014!

« Reply #2041 on: October 24, 2014, 04:06:31 AM »

I'd just like to see GN'R creating some hype in people, as even amongst the fans the band is not that interesting at the moment. But of course that is how it goes; there are highs and lows and today something might be in and the next day is not. In the 00's GN'R came out with the "new line-up", with new songs and the wait for CD started for real.. plus the 80's overall and GN'R were "in" anyway, so Message boards like this were crowded 24/7. Now it's been 6 years since CD was released and even though there might be something new coming our way, there's no real wait going on as it is more of a "normal situation", not like when we were waiting for CD.

And I'm not saying this in a negative kind of way, maybe I just didn't realize how the painful wait for CD was actually good times Cool

How do you think this hype could materialize?

An unannounced secret club show? A new single on iTunes out of the blue? An announcement of a new album's release?

Of that list, I'd say a song on iTunes.

An announcement of a release date will only draw laughter, given the track record.  The unannounced club show is nice if you live in that town.  But it would only have value for people at large if the club show was a precursor to something else.

Great question, and one I've often wondered about.  So much has changed in the 6 short years since Chinese dropped.  The sales, which were waaaayyyyy overly scrutinized at the time, would look like a gold mine to any artist in late 2014.  I would say now, an out of the blue digital release of some kind is the way to go to start hype.

Beyonce & U2 have recently had great success with surprise releases, which garnered a ton of media attention.  I would imagine GNR would see that same success IF the label gets behind the release, whatever it may be (single, a few songs, album).

Pick a song that might actually get played on the radio.

In other words, something catchier than 'Chinese Democracy'.

Why 'Better' was not the first single, I will never understand.

Yeah, just dumb.  It had already gotten a good response back in 2006 too.

Hell, Rolling Stone put Better in the top 20 songs of 2008.  Chinese is a solid track, but the minute long intro made it an utterly bizarre choice for a first single.  I mean, this is GNR, not Pink Floyd.  Better (or IRS) would have been much more solid choices to re-introduce GNR IMO.

'I.R.S.' would have been my pick.  Still sort of sounds like the GNR people remember.

The first time I heard IRS, I remember thinking it was the meanest GNR track since You Could Be Mine.  Bucket's solo blew my mind.

Axl said the next album has some pretty mean/dark tracks on it.  I'm sure whatever they put out next is gonna be fantastic.

For singles, I would have started with Irs as well...classic Axl swagger, mind blowing solo...just a more classic rock vibe to it. Then, I would have dropped TWAT. Third, Street of Dreams...

Having not heard any of the hopefully soon to be released tracks, Axl's description of 'Soul Monster' AKA 'Leave Me Alone' sounds pretty fantastic for a first single.  ok

I like the announcement of a release date idea --- but only if they know 100% they will follow through on that date.  You're right, it would draw laughter, but it would also draw attention and then when they actually come through with a release, they can play the "nobody believed in us" card and do a one-week residency on Fallon.

Secret club show in NYC, broadcast to the masses on Sirius XM (or, alternately, streamed free through "someone"), followed the next day by an I-tunes single release.

Beyonce & U2 have recently had great success with surprise releases, which garnered a ton of media attention.

True, but some of the attention was a backlash.

For example, putting an exclusive on iTunes will piss off Amazon. "Forcing" an album on people will piss people off.
These are things you need to consider...

And then the fact that a digital only release wouldn't sit well with a lot of hardcore fans who want a physical copy in their hands. I can relate to this. Nothing like holding a cd, or a vinyl, in your hands.

Secret club show in NYC, broadcast to the masses on Sirius XM (or, alternately, streamed free through "someone"), followed the next day by an I-tunes single release.

Or stream it through the official site like in the past?
